House in Lectoure, Gers, Midi Pyrenees, France - Peaceful Location, 5 Minutes Drive to The Village.
- English, French
Our family has owned our holiday home for 30 years and it is much loved. We have spent all our holidays here, winter and summer, while our children were growing up. As London born children ,they loved the outdoor life that the house and its garden offered them. The pool is a pleasure we have all enjoyed! We love the local markets and enjoy cooking the delicious food the region is famous for. The village has a few restaurants too, so eating out is also possible. In the summer, many of the local villages also have fetes, which offer a fun night out and a chance to eat with the locals. The house is often surrounded by fields of sunflowers which are absolutely glorious in July. Garlic and melons are the local crop. The Lectoure melons are justifiably renowned for their delicious sweetness.
Lesley purchased this Farmhouse in 1989
Why Lesley chose Lectoure
We chose this beautiful area of France because it is is still very authentically local and French. We felt some of the other more well trodden areas are more touristy, and while the Gers certainly has its tourists in the summer, it remains largely a farming area. The food is delicious and the summer markets abundant with locally grown produce. It is easy to get to and yet feels far away from the hectic pace at home. We love the peace at the house but the local towns and villages are close by. There are lots of amenities and things to do especially in the summer and it seems to suit all ages.
What makes this Farmhouse unique
The house offers comfortable accommodation, good cooking facilities and a lovely main bathroom. The pool is situated a way from the front of the house and is surrounded by lovely old trees. It is very much a home rather than a property furnished to let, and we hope that anyone who comes to stay here will love our pretty holiday house as much as we do..

We spent a very pleasant stay in the house : the rooms are very spacious, the surroundings are very quiet, the fire place is great, there is a big living room perfect for friends to meet, the outdoors are very nice with the lake nearby and the garden is nice too. But there are a few things that would need to be improved such as very noisy radiators that woke some of us up at night (need to be drained). The kitchen is a very nice room but a coffee machine would also be appreciated. Finally we had very bad smell in the small bathroom and at the entrance of the kitchen (coming from the septic tank due to rainy weather). The place looks perfect for a summer stay though. Thanks to Lissette and Oscar for their kindness, welcome and availability.
Thank you for your kind comments about my beautiful house, which I have passed on to Lissette too.
As I said in my previous reply, I have taken on board your comments about the coffee machine and will look into it although the cafetiere method also makes great coffee . Unfortunately the air in the central heating system is a result of the heating having been off prior to your arrival. The septic tank too is difficult to predict ( weather can be a factor in its function) .
I hope that you will perhaps come again in the summer when the pool is open and the sun is shining! Best wishes, Lesley
The Atlantic is about two hours away and we certainly often went when the children were small.
The Pyrenees are very close too, about 1 1/2 hours.
The nearest airport is Toulouse (1hr 15 min) or Bordeaux (1 hr 30 min) but Pau , Tarbes, Bergerac and Limoges are are reasonably close. We usually drive and take Portsmouth -St Malo, on the overnight crossing, then driving down during the next day. It takes 7-8 hours to drive from St Malo. It is also possible to take the TGV to Agen and hire a car there.
The village of Lectoure is 3 km away, and Agen to the north and Auch to the south, both about 30km. Nearby are the towns of Fleurance ( 15 mins,) and Condom (20mins.)
Lectoure has a lovely spa with medicinal waters which has an indoor pool, whirlpool and hammam. There are three banks, several hairdressers and pharmacists, 2 newsagents, gift and clothes shops, 2 butchers, a number of bakers, and various bars and restaurants. There is also a small 2 screen cinema which shows English language films in the summer.
On the edge of town there is a very good Intermarche which has a fresh fish counter too. The local market is every Friday but there are others nearby, Fleurance is 15 minutes away and has a lovely market on Tuesdays.
Lectoure has a fascinating history and there is an excellent museum next to the cathedral. There is also an outdoor pool in the village which is beautifully kept.
Golf is also available in nearby Fleurance. Further information is available at the house and at the tourist information office in town.
