Ideal little family break
Lovely little place, perfect for all the ages in the family and all our dogs. We were lucky with the weather, so we're able to make the most of the beautiful garden and views. Thank you to the host for our arrival cream tea =D . . . Would recommend
This is the perfect holiday destination. The accommodation is basic but well thought out and has everything that you need to make your stay comfortable. The views from the house are spectacular and the location is very convenient for exploring the area. We were definitely not ready to leave at the end of our stay and hope to return very soon.
Thanks for the review Corinne, I'm glad you enjoyed you stay at Cancleave. We look forward to welcoming you again soon.
Great cottage in a beautiful location
We had a great weekend at cancleave. Beautiful cliff top location with stunning views. Perfect place to escape from city life! The scones, jam and clotted cream were an added bonus! Thank you.
Fantastic Views, Disappointing Cottage
The views from Cancleave are every bit as amazing as advertised.
The gardens are lovely too, so if the hedges partially obscuring the views from inside the cottage are annoying, the gardens are a well kept spot to admire the views & star gaze on a clear night.
The Multi-Fuel stove is lovely, with coal & logs provided to get you started.
Scones provided at arrival which was a nice touch, & possibly also tea & sugar(?), although no milk.
From there, I'm afraid things were tinged with disappointment.
The property is advertised as having Internet access, both on here & Twitter, but this was not present. This was the biggest irritation as we're small business owners & while it would be nice to get away without having to think about work / pay clients daily, this is not currently an option for us, hence searching exclusively for accommodation with WiFi. We replied to the tweet posted by the owner advising that WiFi was available from March 2016, & also e-mailed to try & find the router, but received no reply.
"Linens provided" includes only bed linen & bathmat, but not towels. Unclear, & inconsistent with the dozen or so other cottage stays in Cornwall over the years.
It may be possible to park 2 small cars with high ground clearance (to clear the ramp from the road), inside the gates, but we couldn't manage it. There is extra parking 50 yards up the road, but worth considering if you've been trying to find single storey accommodation to ease accessibility issues for a family member. The property is not advertised as wheelchair accessible, as there are a couple of steps within the property, in addition to those at the front & back doors.
The cottage does sleep 8, at a push. (2 doubles, 1 bunk & another single with what appears to be a pull out additional single.
All mattresses past their best. Uncomfortable due to springs poking up & easily fixable with foam mattress toppers or replacements.
The kitchen is big enough for a cereal/toast breakfast & a cheese & biscuit / nibbles supper, but probably not a cooked breakfast / meal for 8.
Very effective electric heaters are provided, & absolutely required as the property loses heat very quickly. You can choose between waking up freezing & staying awake wondering if leaving the electric heater on over night is safe.
Don't adjust the shower if you value your skin. It's not very powerful either, so expect to hold the shower head rather than stand under it.
Very dated (& not old fashioned charm/character).
Thanks for your feedback, I am sorry to hear that you had some problems during your stay.
With regard to the WiFi, installation was due to go ahead at the end of February but just prior to the booked date BT informed us that there would be a charge of £7500 + VAT which is clearly not viable. I thought I had removed WiFi from all of our various web listings but it seems that this one slipped through the net. I take responsibility for this and can only apologies again.
The listing does state that bed linen is provided but not towels. I apologies for any confusion over this. Towels maybe something that we should consider providing as standard.
Immediately prior to your stay we had a plumber at the property as there had been an airlock in the system causing reduced pressure. It seems that this has not been properly sorted so we will have to get him back in. Apologies for this.
With regards to the mattresses, we are aware that one of the doubles needs changing and a replacement is on order.
The property is advertised as accommodating a maximum of 8 people and does state that this includes a bunk bedroom and a guest bed in the single, making it a twin.
Again, I am very sorry for the issues that you encountered and we will do our best to address them. Unfortunately the WiFi may only be solvable by use of a 4G router and we are looking at options for this.
With regard to parking, guests very often park two cars in the space provided. The ramp is quite steep but we haven't heard of any problems before.
It is very unusual for us to receive negative feedback and therefore we take this very seriously.
I wish we could have had the opportunity to try to put things right for you during your stay but we honestly didn't receive any e-mail and had no notification of your tweet. I have only now found your tweet by looking for it. I have notifications switched on but didn't receive anything.
Does Owner's Direct not provide you with our contact telephone numbers? If not then I need to address this and guests clearly need to be able to contact us if necessary.
Apologies again for the negative aspects of your stay.
Fantastic family holiday
Property owner very helpful and really nice to deal with. Arrived to find basic essentials provided (coffee and tea, logs, toilet roll, scones and clotted cream). Bungalow was perfect as a holiday base; clean and comfortable and magnificently situated with the Cornish coastal path running alongside part of the garden, and fields on the other sides. There can't be many places where you can look at the Atlantic while standing at the kitchen sink. Nearest other property is about 400 yards along a single-track road, so it's quiet and secluded. We stayed during Easter holidays and the weather was cold, so playing board games by the wood-burning stove was lovely after a day out walking or body-boarding with the children. There's a steep path down to the rocky beach directly under the cottage. The final part is a roped scramble down a very steep incline, so you need to be fit and agile. I would have let my 8 and 10-year-olds tackle it in dry weather but it was too slippery during our stay. It wasn't a problem as there's another bay ten minutes' walk along the coastal path and Widemouth Bay is a five minute drive. We'd not been to this part of Cornwall before and the coast is stunning. Coastal walks are challenging but worth the effort. Crackington Haven is a picturesque village with a cafe, pub and nice little beach, but we spent most of our time at Widemouth or in Bude. Widemouth is a beautiful vast sandy beach with rocky outcrops at either end - great for scrambling and rock-pooling. Loads of places hire out wetsuits and bodyboards and we managed four hours in the sea most days, despite a water temperature of 8 degrees and the occasional hail storm. We were first-time body-boarders and hadn't realised how warm you stay wearing decent wetsuits. Bude is a great town, with plenty of shops, supermarkets, cafes and good restaurants. Everyone was really friendly. There's pitch-and-putt, a golf course, fishing from the harbour breakwater, boat charters for fishing, skateboard ramp, rowing boats for hire, a really nice indoor swimming pool with water slide and wave machine, a seawater pool on the sandy beach, ten-pin bowling, soft-play, Go-Ape style walkway and probably much more we didn't find. The town has a surfer vibe and is sophisticated - not at all a trashy British seaside resort. We spent five days there and would have liked to have stayed much longer.
Thanks for your kind review of both the property and the area and thanks also for looking after the property so well. So glad you had a great time.
