About Richard Dale
My family and I moved to France in 2003 and have renovated a number of historic farms in the area. We are all well integrated into the local community and speak fluent French. We love to show visitors around this delightful part of the country. We encourage our guests to practice their French (particularly on the bread and croissant delivery lady); but for those who are a bit nervous with the language, we are more than happy to make restaurant reservations or help deal with any emergencies (eg. if a car breaks down or if someone requires medical treatment etc.)
Richard Dale purchased this Farmhouse in 1997
Why Richard Dale chose Gibourne
My parents first purchased a small house in the area in 1988 and after a few delightful holidays here, my wife and I decided to buy a property ourselves in 1997. The stunning countryside, sunny weather, lovely old buildings, peace and quiet and quirky local people all contributed to a decision to move here with our 1 year old son Jamie in 2003. Our daughter Lucie was born here in Aug 2004 and we have run the property as a complex since around that time. The place took years to renovate !
What makes this Farmhouse unique
Our guests seem particularly impressed with the facilities for children and especially the safety aspect of the property with the fully enclosed garden, surrounded by the gites themselves and the separate swimming pool area which is also full enclosed. The field (with soccer nets ) and play barn (with ping pong and basketball hoop) add a couple of further dimensions to round off the holiday experience. With five cottages and a lot of shared facilities, we have a real community feel and many guests come back year after year to meet up again with friends they made during their first holiday here.

Best Holiday With Kids-Ever
This is the perfect location for a relaxed holiday with preteen kids: 2015 was our second holiday and are booked again for 2016. We'd had lovely holidays in Turkey & Portugal prior to this but nowhere we wanted to return to. The main selling points are: comfortable accommodation (but not luxury, no need to stress about kids wrecking anything!), mix of private & sociable areas, lovely pool, very safe for even small children, but most of all, all the children (from the 5 gites) end up playing together, so the adults can relax. The kids run out in the morning in their pj's to check on the hens and see who is up: they can start playing with friends while you sit in bed with a coffee! Plenty to do in the local area, decent supermarket 10 mins by car. Borrow the communal bikes and cycle to the local pub/ bistro. BBQ in the evening outside your gite, get the kids in bed and relax with a glass of local wine-bliss! We fly into La Rochelle and hire a car, so only an hour and 15 mins drive.
Lovely Setting, Great for Kids
Really enjoyed our stay. The kids loved the place. Fantastic to have somewhere you can let the kids just run around as you relax outside.
Some nice touches e.g. books left for the kids/adults to read, equipment like potties/stepstools etc.
Richard, the owner, was on hand for any queries.
Rural location so car is needed.
Going back again this summer :)
Another wonderful holiday here (our 5th visit)
We love it here. We have 2 girls age 4 and 6 and have been staying at La Vendange each summer for the past 4 years. It is perfect for children, very safe, with an enclosed garden and two lovely heated pools.
There are swings, a slide, a trampoline and a shaded sandpit, not forgetting the chickens and quails all of which the children love.
There are plenty of lovely things to do in the surrounding area, enough to keep you and the children busy for 2 weeks if you wish (even if the weather inclement). Or just relax at the gites where the children will play with their new friends.
Special interest holidays:
Horse riding, riding lessons available.
Pottery painting every Monday on site.
Kids and adults Diving courses available in the pool each Wednesday afternoon by the Professional instructors who live in our village. Children can do a one hour course with full aqualung to earn an official PADI bubble-maker certificate!
Cycling is a popular pastime in the area as the roads are very quiet and not too hilly. The local countryside is spectacular with gently undulating terrain partly forested and partly farmed with lots of sunflower and wheat fields, interspersed with vineyards. Guest sometimes bring their own bikes or can hire them locally. For occasional use we have a few kids and adults bikes on site which are for the use of all the guests.
The nearest beaches are around Fouras (approx 45mins). Many good beaches are within about a 1hr drive. We are well located to be far enough away from the beaches to avoid the coastal crowds and heavy traffic, but close enough to enjoy regular trips to the beach as and when you like.
