About James Allen
Following many years being based in London running my own building/renovations company I am now based in the French Alps working as a ski instructor in winter months and building in the summer. I'm a keen kitesurfer and this was another big appeal of buying the property as there is some fantastic kiting to be had in Sal. Very much into my sports and love to travel and live/work abroad.
James Allen purchased this Apartment in 2008
Why James Allen chose Santa Maria
Following a long weekend in Sal with my girlfriend and experiencing the friendly and relaxing atmosphere that was shown to us in Santa Maria, i decided to agree to purchase the Apartment off plan from the UK based developer. At the time there was nothing but an arid landscape where the resort was to be built!! The resort has been built and finished to the highest quality and even better then i had expected given it's remote location. I love the feel of the resort and the fact all the apartment blocks look like villas as opposed to the kind of apartment blocks we are used to seeing in mainland Europe! The grounds are well landscaped and the whole place has a relaxing and pleasant feel about it. Everyone who visits has nothing but good things to say about Sal and Tortuga beach and i'm sure you'll have a great time and come home relaxed and refreshed!
What makes this Apartment unique
The private south west facing balcony benefits from plenty of afternoon and evening sunshine and given the fact it isn't a shared balcony you can spend this time chilling out away from the rest of the resort.....

March 2019. Excellent apartment in a very good resort
This apartment is in a good location within the complex of Melia Tortuga. It is spacious. It has 2 shower rooms, 1 double bedroom with air con and TV, 1 room with 2 single beds, a kitchen, a living/lounge area with air con and TV which leads to a large outdoor balcony. The water was always hot. The tap water can be used for tea, coffee and cooking but the advice is not to drink it but to buy bottled water. Don’t buy it from the resort go stock up from a supermarket. The kitchen is well equipped (fridge, over + 4 cooker hob, washing machine, microwave, kettle, toaster and all pots and plates etc) and there is also an iron, ironing board, hoover and hair dryer. All in all there isn’t much more you could want. The TV has BBC 24 and some other English speaking channels, including some film channels. The Wi Fi in the apartment was pretty good but got seriously slowed down around 8-9.00am and 5-6.00pm presumably everyone used it. The Wi Fi elsewhere around the pools etc is weak and/or hit and miss.
Melia Tortuga is very good. The staff we found to be excellent (unless they were spoken to like the hired help which we witnessed), friendly and happy. The service in their bars and restaurants was first class. If you go to the Spa open up any conversation with ‘do you have any offers?’ as my wife had each massage at half price. If you are an English reader then bring your own books as most in the small ‘library’ are in northern European languages. There is an ATM in the lobby. It gives out Escudos (the informal exchange rate is 100 escudos = 1 euro and these currencies are pretty much interchangeable but if you pay in euro you are actually paying 10% on top of the escudo cost, if you care). There were ample sun beds around the pools and on the beach. The beach is windy and can be very windy.
We did 3 weeks. We really liked it. It’s not the Canaries. It’s more like Brazil/ West Indies. It is developing. It is largely big hotel based. The beaches are great. The landscape is barren. The people were lovely. The resort was very good. The flat was excellent. Our intention was ‘fly and flop’ – so for this, ‘perfect’. Thank you for letting us stay here.
Glad the holiday went as planned and all was to your liking.
Thanks also for the in depth review as it will help others considering to rent with me.
Also thanks for looking after the place
Hope you come back again in the future and all the best
Excellent apartment, great location
We had a fantastic two week stay in this apartment. It is fully equipped with everything you need, whether self catering, converting to all inclusive/half board or choosing to eat in Santa Maria as we did. There are several good places to eat, Soul Kitchen was our favourite. It is a short taxi ride into Santa Maria 3euros one way daytime 4euros evening. The beach attached to the hotel is really nice and we recommend a visit to Bikini Beach Club for a meal/drinks.
Lovely week of winter sun
We had a great week in James’s apartment. It was clean and spacious and well equipped. We particularly enjoyed sitting out on the large balcony. The 2 swimming pools at the hotel were great — although a little cold! But OK once you got in.... Ponta Preta beach was fantastic - biggest waves we’ve ever seen - it was hard to get my 2 teenage boys out of the water. We ate out every night at different restaurants in Santa Maria which was a 5 minute taxi ride. Lots to choose from - they were all good. New Year’s Eve we enjoyed fireworks on the beach. We all loved it and will definitely return to Cape Verde. The guaranteed sunshine and no jet lag in particular is a big bonus.
So glad you had such a good trip to Cape Verde and enjoyed the apartment and amenities provided.
Happy New Year to you and the family and hope i can host you all again in the future.
Also many thanks for looking after the property and leaving in a nice clean condition.
All the best
property very neat, tidy and fully equipped. shame the main air conditioning unit wasn’t working.
the property is very well situated on the site. it has all mod cons and everything you need for a home from home stay. the hotel itself is lovely and staff are very helpful. the spa is worth a visit but don’t pay the full price as every few days the staff come to the swimming pools to ask if you want a treatment usually with a 50% discount. i had the balinese massage and rather than 110 euro’s it cost 45 euros and well worth it for an 80 minute massage. if you can, ask for Anita as she was fab doing the massage.
if self catering there is a buffet style restaurant across the road from the hotel and also a place for pizza. otherwise you can go into santa maria where there is an abundance of restaurants with a variety of price ranges. beware as some can be expensive and not very good value for money. we found a gem at the end of our holiday called Cafe de Mar where the portions are generous and it is excellent value for money.
we also went on a TUI trip for half a day. it was a 4x4 jeep safari around the island finishing off at the salt lakes. well worth it and going to the salt lakes and going in them was a good finale to the tour.
weather was lovely and the breeze is rather welcoming. a good alternative to the caribbean and we will definitely be returning.
Glad you had a great time and made the most of what the island has to offer.
Good advise for the Spa too so thanks for that!
Sorry about the AC unit not working in the lounge, i wasn't made aware of this and will get onto it immediately
Hope i can accommodate you again in the future
Had a great stay over Easter in sunny Sal with temperatures around 30 degrees every day. The apartment is in an ideal spot on the resort close to the pools and a short walk to the beach whilst the balcony is perfect to capture the late afternoon sun.
The glorious beaches of Ponte Preta and Santa Maria are only a 5 min taxi ride or a longer walk if you're more adventurous and fancy a stroll along the coast. Both are spectacular and where we spent most of our time. Santa Maria also has plenty of great restaurants and bars to enjoy.
If you're after a relaxing week in the sun, this is the place!
We enjoyed our stay in the apartment which is in a good location in the resort. We spent a lot of time on the beach as the pool areas were very crowded and noisy. We only met one couple who were not all inclusive at the resort, they like us were not impressed with 83Euros each per day to upgrade. Several people we spoke to said the food at the resort was only average, mainly buffet style and a bit boring so we were glad to get the short taxi ride into Santa Maria which had a good seldction of restaurants. On arrival at the resort we asked a taxi driver to take us to a supermarket in town and he offered to wait for us and take us back to the resort. A good tip is to ask your transport to drop you off at the side gate as it is a much shorter walk to the apartment than from the main entrance. The groceries in the supermarket were fine, not as varied as in the UK and a bit more expensive. Bread is very fresh and a reasonable selection of fresh vegetables can be found on market stalls. Go off the beach and main shopping street and we found the restaurants just as good and a lot cheaper off the beaten track but still close to everything. With warm sunshine it is a great place for a winter break.
Glad you had a nice holiday and enjoyed your stay at the apartment.
Sorry the pool was a bit crowded but New Year week is the busiest of the whole year so does mean having to be a bit of an early bird to catch the best spots, but i guess this would be the same in any of the other resorts....
Thanks for the good advise on the shopping and taxi drop off tips.
Hope to be able to have you stay again in the future
All the best
Special interest holidays:
Cape Verde is fast becoming well known in the kitesurfing/windsurfing world and currently hosts 1 of the world cup events each year on the island. Fantastic steady trade winds throughout the winter months with perfect waves. There are perfect spots for all levels. Ponta Preta has an amazing wave that is strictly for the more advanced surfers! Sea fishing is widely available along with quad biking, scuba diving, dolphin watching and boat trips.
The stunning white sandy beach of Ponta Preta is only a matter of metres away. Cristal clear waters and day after day of sunshine will make it a trip to remember. Whether you are here for the fantastic water sports or simply to relax, this resort will be the perfect choice!
Sal benefits from direct flights from some of the UKs major airports. 5.5 hour flight times. 15 min taxi ride to the resort and no time difference from the UK.
Only a 15-20 minute walk into the lovely town of Santa Maria. Plenty of taxis available from the hotel entrance and in town for only a €3 ride into Santa Maria.
The town has numerous bars and restaurants offering various types of cuisine. Some of the food i've tried in town has been fantastic and i highly recommend going into town rather than the paying over the top for the all inclusive food in resort. Very friendly locals too and most speak good English.
