About Matilde Cooke
The owners of this house are Paul Cooke, a painter and Matilde Cooke, an opera singer. They have 2 children, 10 and 12, a dog and 2 cats.
Why Matilde Cooke chose Sfakia
We stumbled on the abandoned medieval village of Kolokassia on a walk at the end of Asfendou Gorge. We were intrigued by the ruins, all built around a central Cretan arch and the position of the village is charming. Paul always wanted a place in the mountains and Matilde's dream was always to live by the sea. We felt we had found the perfect compromise! We bought this property as a ruin about 10 years ago and have restored it slowly, trying to preserve it but make it comfortable at the same time. This part of Crete is very unspoilt and there are few tourists here. The local tavernas are family run and the the food is delicious and very reasonable.
What makes this House unique
Our house in Kolokassia is the most peaceful place I know. It is surrounded by amazing nature and constantly throughout the day your eye is drawn towards the sea. The sky at night is extraordinary with a steady parade of shooting stars. We sit on the terrace at night drinking Raki and talking till the small hours. And then when you go to sleep, either on a bed under the stars or in the house you sleep the most refreshing sleep imaginable. Then, the next day there are so many nice beaches to choose from. Or walks. As a special treat we will go on a small taxi boat to Loutro, a village only reachable by boat. This is the bluest water I have ever seen. Our house is great for the children, an adventure and a real bonding experience for the family as a whole. We think of it as our paradise.

We loved every moment of our two weeks at Kolokassia, which were mostly spent gazing absent-mindedly at the spectacular view from the terraces, following the sun around the lovely terraces and listening to the delightful sounds of bells (from the hillside goats and sheep) and birdsong. All the local beaches and tavernas were excellent and very quiet as it was the beginning of the season. May is a great time to visit - the weather is fine and warm and the wild flowers are spread profusely across the landscape.
Dominique and Yves (who live locally) were very helpful in showing us all the necessary details. The lack of mains electricity wasn't a problem and lighting the lamps and candles was a charming ritual each evening and seemed to fill the house with a golden glow. The house wouldn't suit those with mobility problems (or an aversion to driving on steeply winding roads) but if you want peace, solitude, spectacular views (plus amazing star-gazing), proximity to splendid beaches and friendly tavernas, Kolokassia couldn't be bettered.
Special interest holidays:

Also picking wild herbs on the mountain slopes. The owner of this house is a painter and if you like landscape painting it is ideal.
