Le Casteras is a village farmhouse with attached gite. Originally converted for family use, renovation was carried out to a high standard in 2009. The whole property is set in 6000m2 of gardens, mostly mown grass with plenty of space to kick a football around or play hide and seek in the orchard. Guests are invited to share the use with the owners of their fenced 12 x 6m solar heated pool (max depth 1.6m). The gite has its own patio with table and chairs for outside dining. Situated in a small village next to the church, the property is ideal for bird watching (just wait by the pool to see red kites and buzzards circle over the garden). There are some delightful, easy walks close by and a 1912 metres mountain for the energetic about 20 minutes away. The village has its own bakery and restaurant. We are 1 hour from Spain, Lourdes and Toulouse and about 2 and a half hours from both the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts.

About Alison and Mike Homer
Mike is a former teacher and Alison is a Chartered Accountant working for Airbus in Toulouse. The two girls Lucy is at University and Lily attends a local school. Both are bilingual.
Alison and Mike Homer purchased this Barn in 2005
Why Alison and Mike Homer chose Estadens
We decided to move to France in 2005 whilst the girls were still young enough to learn the language. Alison formerly worked for Rolls-Royce and it seemed logical to move near to Toulouse. Two years research and many visits later brought us to Rouede. Within an hour of Toulouse and yet close to the mountains. Alison fell in love with the house as soon as she saw it, although it was covered in snow at the time and we had no idea what the views were like until we revisited in the Summer to make an offer. We have found the people in the village very welcoming and we have developed friendships over here. Mike enjoys walking in the hills and mountains and Alison is a member of a local choir.
What makes this Barn unique
The House is located in a very quiet and friendly village. The views and local walks sold the property to us. The weather is warm from April through to the end of October with a "hot bit" in the middle. September is a particularly lovely month to be sat out in the garden or in the pool. We usually can swim from March to the end of October. Winter doesn't really show itself until January and February, the winter season seems short here and we rarely get large falls of snow.

Great gite in beautiful location
Beautiful location with stunning views of mountains, clean and comfortable gite with friendly and welcoming hosts, and a great pool! Would highly recommend.
Amazing setting, huge and wonderful gardens, spacious and comfortable house
The photos of the interior don't really do the house justice: it is more spacious than you might think from the photos. The house is very nice and full of character (old stables conversion), the pool is great for the kids and the garden is a truly amazing space. It is huge and varied, with a children's activity area (trampoline, swings etc), an orchard, a kitchen garden and several open field areas. The owners grow various fruit and vegetables: our children enjoyed the freshly-picked strawberries from the garden. The setting is wonderful, with views of the Pyrenees and many walks and scenery in the vicinity. The owners (who are English) are friendly and knowledgeable about local activities and walks. Highly recommended.
FANTASTIC in every way!
Alison and Mike have created a wonderful setting for a PERFECT family holiday! We have been home now for a week and have not stopped singing their praises to friends/family and anyone else who will listen! Their gite completely equipped with everything any family would need; a pool and sun-trap terrace, trampoline, spacious garden..... more thank fully equipped kitchen, lovely light, clean bedrooms, shower and bath, extra towels sheets, pillows.... wifi, satellite TV........
and the setting.... could not be more perfect with views we found ourselves obsessively photographing at every light change........ THANK YOU Alison, Mike and girls for a truly wonderful holiday!!!
Great accom, Great Hosts, Great Vi
We would highly recommend staying at Mike & Alison's gite. It was well equipped, even had food in the fridge to get you started. They brought firewood and lit the wood burner for when we returned from our outings. Their daughter entertained my two young boys and they enjoyed playing in the garden. The mountain views were sensational and very close to access the motorway. Mike & Alison made us feel very welcome and relaxed. We would definitely return and will recommend them to our other expat friends.
Relax and Enjoy!
We always look forward to coming to stay at les Casteras, wonderful surroundings , great views and welcoming hosts! It really is the perfect spot for a relaxing holiday, you can sit in the sunshine and watch the swallows skimming the pool, or undertake more strenuous activities such as walks in the surrounding hills and mountains; Mike is a mine of information about the best routes. The gite is very clean and comfortable, well appointed and with the swimming pool just outside the back door, what more could you want!
Le Casteras - Rouede
A delightful retreat in beautiful countryside. The welcome pack was lovely and the gite clean and nicely furnished. We enjoyed a lovely restful break and our children were thoroughly entertained with plenty to do for them in the garden and a nice pool to cool off in.
We are 2 hours and 30 minutes from both Biarritz on the Atlantic coast and Narbonne Plage on the Mediterranean.
Rouede is 15 mins from the A64 motorway. Toulouse Blagnac airport is 1 hour away, Carcassonne and Pau are both 1hr30
The nearest supermarket is 15 minutes away at Mane. There are weekly markets at Aspet, Salies du Salat, St Gaudens and St Girons. St Gaudens, our nearest city, is 25 mins. There is a small resturant and a pizza/bread shop in the village.
The area is ideal for walking, from gentle strolls, to hill walks and for the more energetic there is the Pic de Cagire at 1912m, with magnificent views as far as Luchon. Vultures can usually be seen circling the peak. Bears have been re-introduced to the region, although visitors returning from walks in the mountains have not claimed to have seen any. We assume those visitors who didn't return have! Toulouse has a number of museums, the Cité d'Espace (Space City) and Airbus site tours. For children, Pyrenee Ho (tree climbing etc) is 45 minutes away. Auzas, with electric boats on a small lake is 25 minutes. Animaparc with small animals, bouncy castles and other amusements is 1 hour 10minutes. Lourdes is well worth a visit at 1 hour away. There are markets at Salies du Salat, 15 minutes, Aspet, 15 minutes, St Gaudens 25 minutes and St Girons 30 minutes. The local supermarket is 10 minutes away at Mane.
