"Tarn Hows"

"Tarn Hows" has a small vestibule entrance hall One bedroom with a super kingsize bed, can be used as a twin on request, the other room has a standard size four poster double Both are en-suite with wc wash hand basins bath/ shower or new walk-in shower and heated towel rails The lounge is a pleasant and spacious area overlooking the garden with settee and easy chairs and colour TV It also has an additional log/coal effect electric fire to augment the central heating if required. The kitchen/dining area has a dining table and chairs for four people. The kitchen is fully equiped with all necassary utensils, fridge/freezer, gas hob and electric fan oven, extracter fan unit and dish washer. It has spacious and well lit worktops. The fully tiled surrounds depict farm and garden scenes and are supplied by a local company from the village. Furnishings throughout are based on a country cottage theme and give the apartment a soft and relaxed atmosphere. Apartment overlooks the pleasant garden.

Coniston Lodge is situated on a side road from the village leading up to the Old Man Of Coniston, and its adjacent mountains. It has fine views across to the crags behind the village. Built on the side of the hill, it is very similar in design to an Alpine Lodge, with wooden fascias, and parking provided under the building. The properties are approached from the car park via a pretty front garden with colourful shrubs and plants, through the shared reception area, leading to separate apartment entrances. Elizabeth has created a Country Cottage Style ambiance in both apartments by the use of carefully chosen fabrics and soft furnishings, many of them made by herself. This gives all the rooms a unique cosy and warm feeling. The properties are fully centrally heated, but also have 'log effect' electric fires in the lounge. There are secluded mature garden areas with an abundance of flowering shrubs and plants, where guests can relax with a cup of tea (or a glass of wine) after a day out on the hills, or a tour of the Lakes. We provide a laundry room with washing machine, tumble drier and ironing facilities for your convenience. Lake Coniston is just a short walk away, where you can hire rowing or self drive motor boats. If you prefer something a little more splendid you can take a cruise on one of the Coniston Launch Companies lake cruisers, or the National Trusts restored Victorian steam yacht 'Gondola'.

About Mr A Robinson

Elizabeth and Anthony Robinson have been in the the hospitality business in Coniston for many years. So have a unique insight into the needs and expectations of visitors to the Lakes. We are both keen hill walkers, and spend as much time in the mountains as possible.We are always willing to help our guests plan & get the most out of their holiday with us. Anthony is in the voluntary local Mountain Resue Team, its Leader/Deputy for 30 years, and still an active member. He was awarded an MBE in the 2015 New Years honours list for services to Mountain Rescue. Elizabeth is interested in design and handicrafts, her influence can be seen in the blend of modern appliances with traditional cottage furnishings and accessories, some of which are her own work. We are both interested in plants and the garden is a continuous and evolving challenge.

Why Mr A Robinson chose Coniston

We inherited our original family home in 1981, when we had a Restaurant & Wine Shop in the Village. In 1989 we extended the property by the addition of six generous en-suite bedrooms to create 'Coniston Lodge Hotel'. This was our business for the next 21 years, until we became aware that the modern vocation trend was very much more in favour of the less formal 'Self Catering' option, which gives guests the freedom to come and go as they wish. Not wishing to leave our lovely home or the beautiful surroundings of Southern Lakeland, in 2010, we converted the hotel into two cottage apartments, each with their own quiet private patio/garden areas.

Coniston Lodge is less than a five minute walk from the centre of Coniston, so conveniently situated within easy walking distance of shops, Inns & Restaurants. Situated on the road that leads up to the mountains above the village our guests can walk out of the front door and have a choice of a miriad of walks of all grades and in all directions, no need to even take the car off the car park. The lake is only a ten minute walk away on level ground, if you would prefer an occasional leisurely Lake Cruise, as a change from the rigours of mountain climbing. For those who would like something even more challenging, why not try Rock Climbing or Ghyll Scrambling with expert tuition available in the village.

Booking Notes:
Bookings are weekly, and are from Friday to Friday. In the Winter, and at short notice at other times, if available, we do take shorter breaks, Minimum 3 days. A non returnable deposit of £100.00 is required at the time of booking, and the balance must be paid six weeks prior to the day of arrival. Enquiries can be made either by email or telephone. We prefer to take booking confirmations by telephone. Payment may be made by Credit/Debit Card, or by cheque if you prefer this method.

Changeover Day:
Changeover day is on a Friday, accept where short breaks have been agreed. Arrival time is after 3pm. If guests wish to arrive earlier or later we will make every effort help them. We ask guests to vacate the property by 10am on the day of departure.

Notes on accommodation: All our bedrooms are supplied with firm divan bed and mattresses and two pillows per person. Linen sheets and pillow cases are supplied as well as duvets. All towelling, bath and hand towels are supplied. A range of soaps and shampoos are also provided. Each bedroom has a hairdryer provided. Additional bedroom furnishings include wardrobe, dressing table with mirror, table and two easy chairs. Electric shaving points are provided in the bathrooms. Outside: Each property has a paved garden area which is provided with a table, sun lounger, and four chairs and a parasol. These areas are screened with wooden fencing, so are private and can't be observed by the public. The garden areas are adjacent to our mature rockery, and are also provided with hanging baskets and pot plants during the summer months.

A group of us rented both properties from Mr & Mrs Robinson, the location in the village is brilliant & both apartments have everything you need to make your stay a pleasure. We will definitely be returning in near future.

A beautiful flat in an extremely picturesque situation.

The flat was very clean, comfortable and homely. It was spacious, well equipped with ideally situated for easy access to the many beautiful places of interest in the surrounding areas.

Anthony and Elizabeth were really helpful and so very friendly for which I would like to say a big thank you.

I would most certainly stay there again and have no hesitation in recommending their accommodation.

Plenty of space for a family of four (with two teenagers)

Excellent location at the foot of Coniston Old Man. Coniston is big enough to have what you need but small enough to be slightly off the beaten track. The property itself was perfect for a weeks holiday - all the facilities worked fine and the owner found a safe place to store our bikes. The owners live next door so responded very quickly to the few questions we had. There is plenty of information on the surrounding area in the welcome pack, and an excellent restaurant called Steam Bistro on Tiberthwaite Ave that is well worth a visit (don't forget to book, though). We cycled up to and around Grizedale and walked up Coniston Old Man so we also didn't need to use the car every day - a pleasure for the driver!

For the quality of the accommodation, the welcome we received and the access the location gave us to such a variety of activities I would recommend Coniston Lodge as a excellent place to stay.

Lovely, peaceful stay!

Property was exactly as described. Very well located, lovely owners, who live onsite, so at hand if any problems. Apartment is perfect for family of four, with two bathrooms (powerful showers!), well equipped kitchen and stock of books. Central location meant we were able to keep car parked for much of our stay, which made a change!

Home away from home

Property was exactly as described with a lovely cake on arrival after a long journey. The apartment was perfectly positioned in a beautiful location. Our host was on hand to provide tips when needed. Apartment was beautifully maintained, every thing on hand to make this break one to remember. Views from the apartment of the Old Man was a great way to wakeup each day. we spent the week walking and exploring the area and will definitely come again. We cannot stop talking about our experience in the Lake District, the charm the views, the walks and look forward to returning in the near future. The nearest international airport is Manchester - approximately a two hour drive away. A rail link from the airport to Windermere (12miles away) or Ulverston (14 miles) is possible, with a linking, but not always convenient bus service on to Coniston. A taxi from the railway station may sometimes be necessary. A bus service is provided between the local villages. But if you wish to travel more widely then we advise that the use of a car is recommended.


Hawkshead and Sawrey (Beatrix Potter' House.) 4 miles. Amleside and Windermere 10 miles. Grasmere (Wordsworth's house.) 12 miles. Ulverston (Market Town and Laurel & Hardy Museum) 14 miles, Kendal (Market Town and home of Kendal Mint Cake) 18 miles. Keswick 20 miles. Barrow in Furness (Ship Museum) 24 miles.

Further Details:

Coniston Village and Lake Coniston are synonymous with Sir Malcolm and Donald Campbell and their attempts on the World Water Speed Record in there Bluebird' racing boats. Sir Malcolm setting a record of 141mph in 1939, and his son Donald, after breaking the record four times between 1956 & 1960, was killed at a speed of over 300mph, attempting to improve on his own world record of 276mph. The Campbells always stayed with the Robinsons when they were in Coniston, the last time at Coniston Lodge. Their exploits are commemorated in the Ruskin Museum in the village, alongside many other historical and local displays recording the life of the village over the centuries. Including mining, farming, the railways, fishing and lacemaking. The museum is named after John Ruskin, a famous Victorian essayist and social reformer who came to live in Coniston in the latter part of the 19century, He is generally regarded as one of the founders of the Trade Union movement, and Ruskin College at Oxford is named after him. His house, 'Brantwood', on the East side of the lake is open to the public for most of the year. An ideal way to visit Brantwood is to take a cruise on one of the Coniston Launches or the steam yacht Gondola, alight at Brantwood pier to visit the house, and then catch the boat back to Coniston on its next trip. There are several other interesting houses to visit closeby - Holker Hall near Cartmel, the home of the Cavendishes, a branch of the Duke of Devonshire's family from Chatsworth. Levens Hall near Kendal, famous for its Topiary Gardens. Muncaster Castle near Ravenglass with its beautiful gardens and displays of Owls and birds of prey. While there you may also wish to take the 14 mile trip from Ravenglass up the Eskdale Valley to Boot on the famous narrow gauge railway. When you return to Coniston after a day out there are plenty of shops where you can purchase souvenirs, and Inns where you can have a meal and recall the days adventures over a glass of wine.
