Zuheros is one of the most beautiful whitewashed villages in Andalucia, nestling in the folds of the Sierra Subbética and surrounded by 1000-year-old olive groves. Its Moorish castle clings improbably to a rocky outcrop and you can sit in its shade and enjoy a coffee or perhaps a glass of the local fino. The village is an excellent base from which to go walking, climbing, cycling and bird-watching and the fascinating cities of Cordoba, Granada and Malaga are only a short drive away. Casa la Hoya is a comfortable, well-equipped village house, recently refurbished to a very high standard. The Moorish decorative style extends to the beautiful walled garden. From here, you can sit by the fountain and listen to the bells of the goats as they climb the mountain side. As well as shops and a pharmacy, the village has restaurants, bars and two museums. A couple of kilometres away is our very own “Bat Cave”, which contains remarkable prehistoric cave paintings and amazing rock formations.

About Helen Hartstein
We are Billy and Helen Hartstein. We moved to Spain in 2006 for an adventure and to spend some time with our two young sons. We lovingly restored our village house and settled into life in Zuheros. Our boys went to the local school and we made many good friends in the village. However, at the end of 2010 we decided to return to the UK for family reasons and so we are renting out our lovely house in Zuheros. We hope that you will enjoy staying in it as much as we enjoyed living in it!
Helen Hartstein purchased this House in 2008
Why Helen Hartstein chose Zuheros
We searched the length and breadth of Spain, looking for the perfect place to live. We wanted somewhere stunningly beautiful and historically interesting, with good local amenities and transport links. The first time we saw Zuheros, we fell in love with the village. Although we explored many more places in Spain, we kept coming back to Zuheros - we knew we had found a wonderful place to live. What appealed to us most about the location was the fantastic mountain scenery, beautiful castle, historic village, proximity to a national park, the walks and cycle routes. It is remote and far away from the crowds, yet well connected, close to excellent motorways and within easy distance of an airport. We are also close to the fascinating cities of Cordoba and Granada.
What makes this House unique
The house is conveniently located in a quiet village, so whilst you can enjoy the tranquility of a "pueblo blanco" you can still benefit from local amenities such as shops (including pharmacy), banks, bars and restaurants. The property was intended as a family home rather than just a holiday property and as such is finished to a very high standard - with handmade terracotta floor tiles, a fantastic bathroom and a beautiful fitted kitchen. Above all, the unique selling point of the property is the stunning location. Once you have seen Zuheros, you will agree that it is the most beautiful village in Spain.
This wonderful place was perfect for four sister travelling together.
We stayed in Zuheros for two weeks as a central place in Andalucia, close enough to Granada, Cordoba, Malaga while at the same time a quiet place to come to at the end of the day. Zuheros has its own sites to see and experience so a stay at 'home' was also enjoyable. We saw the Ancient caves and were lucky to have a tour and lunch in an olive grove. The house is very comfortable and everything you need is there, such as an equipped kitchen, two bathrooms and a wonderful backyard to put your feet up and enjoy a homemade dinner and glass of wine. Helen and Antonio were welcoming (a bottle of wine, bread and cake waiting for us). A very thoughtful touch! The village is small and beautifully located. Every day we marvelled at it as we drove off to a day trip. It was an experience outside the usual tourist scene and we all remarked it was perhaps a bit of the real Spain. The people we met there were lovely, friendly and curious. Thank you for sharing your house!
Dear Heleen. Thanks for the lovely review. We are so pleased you enjoyed your stay. I hope we can welcome you back one day. Best wishes Helen and Billy
Well equipped house in beautiful location.
We had 5 nights in Zuheros. The house is in the middle of the tiny white village - great access to village shops and restaurants. Tourist information provided by Helen and Billy was great. We had temperatures of mid 30s each day and despite the heat and no air conditioner, the house remained like a little oasis. Fans for each room also provided relief in the evening. The welcome pack was lovely - some nice fresh local produce added to our experience. The kitchen had most equipment that we needed to help feed 5 people, with a major supermarket within 10 minutes of the house. The courtyard and fountain was also lovely - we spent a number of evenings out there eating at the outdoor table. Some of the local restaurants were also cheap and lovely. We travelled for day trips to Seville (2 hrs), Granada/Alhambra (1.5 hrs) and Córdoba (1 hr). - all beautiful in their own right. Communication with the owners was also great. At all times we had access to someone to help out if there was an issue. We had a lovely time. Thank you Helen and Billy.
So pleased you enjoyed your stay. Hopefully we can welcome you back again one day!
The perfect getaway
Beautiful, clean, well-maintained house in a dream of a mountain village. Plenty of space for our family of five. The caretaker was readily available for any questions. The backyard garden was idyllic. Hiking in the mountains was delightful. It's easy to get necessities at the corner market, and if necessary the Carrefour in Baena is only minutes away. Also, the Grand Mosque of Cordoba was less than an hour's drive. If we ever return to Andalusia, we would try to reserve the same house again.
We are delighted you had an enjoyable stay and hope you will be able to come back again one day!
Despite some very soggy weather, we really enjoyed our stay in Zuheros! The house is lovely.
Zuheros and the countryside around it was a revelation. So beautiful, and everywhere we went people were so kind to my family of six! The house was very nicely appointed with a lovely kitchen and comfy beds. The back garden is nice as well. We had great meals in local restaurants, hiked up to a waterfall, and visited Córdoba on a day trip. Despite some very muddy roadworks out the front door and lots of rain we had a nice vacation. Helen was understanding and responsive to our issues and I hope that my family can return to Zuheros in warmer weather. Highly recommended!
So pleased you had an enjoyable stay. Hopefully we can welcome you back again one day, when the weather is a little less soggy!
We recently stayed in Helen's modernized home, it has lovely kitchen and bathroom renovations and is in the gorgeous high mountain village of Zuheros surrounded by picturesque olive farms. We enjoyed hiking and day trips from the village as well as the fresh mountain air. We were pleased to see that the hiking trails were really well marked and easy to follow, even for novice hikers like us. We saw mountain goats and a shepherd with a huge heard of mountain climbing sheep! it was a little chilly in January, but we enjoyed snuggling and playing games by the wood burning stove in the evening. I can imagine it would be paradise in the summer with the lovely mountain breezes and dining al fresco in the beautiful fountained courtyard.
We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay. I hope we can welcome you back one day. Best wishes, Helen and Billy
Home from home in a beautiful village
Very spacious house in the heart of the village with restaurants and local shops nearby and wonderful walks on your doorstep.
The booking process was extremely simple, Helen was always ready to answer any queries. On arrival we were met by Antonio who speaks excellent Englishy and showed us round the house, which was spotlessly clean. The highlight of the property is definitely the Moorish inspired garden.
We spent a glorious week exploring locally, mainly on foot but also using the local bus service (we do not drive). Highly recommended for anyone wanting a week of peace in a beautiful unspoilt Andalucian village. The flowers and the birdwatching were spectacular, as were the views over the surrounding countryside.
Many thanks to Helen, Billy and Antonio.
Thank you Liz. We are delighted that you enjoyed your time in Zuheros. I hope we can welcome you back one day!
The many and varied beaches of the Costa del Sol are about an hour and a half away by car. Nearer is the inland lakeside beach at Iznajar which has beachside restaurants, bars and many watersports facilities.
Both Malaga and Granada airports are around 1 ¼ hour away by car. Cordoba railway station is 45 minutes away. It is possible to get to Zuheros by public transport, (one of our guests has done it!) but a car is highly recommended. Car rental is available at the airports or at Cordoba railway station.
Zuheros is ideally located midway between Cordoba (45 minutes) and Granada (1 ¼ hour) and is just over an hour’s drive from Malaga. Other interesting places nearby include local towns Baena, Cabra and Priego de Cordoba, with Seville only a couple of hours away.
Zuheros is a friendly and welcoming village, nestling at the foot of the Sierra Subbética. The national park is a popular with walkers, cyclists and bird-watchers, and there are many walks in the area. The village itself has shops, a pharmacy and two banks. There are several bars and restaurants as well as an open air swimming pool in the summer months. The nearby town of Baena is famed for its olive oil and you can visit several olive oil mills (Almazaras) in the area.
