A large detached house that is beautifully warm and sunny. It is a house you feel very quickly at home in and won't want to leave. There is lots of space inside and out so no one gets under each others feet but its not big enough to get lost in. The accommodation is very light with exposed wooden floors and tiles downstairs. There are four very good double bedrooms whilst downstairs the kitchen and dining area is open plan and a large wet room. The sitting room also has a real fire.

About Sarah Shaw
I have a very lovely son who is seven and two completely mad Jack Russells called Otis and Alfie. I have The Cornish Hen Deli in Penzance which I bought about two years ago. We have a very hectic and full life with lots of fun and laughter. The shop keeps us very busy and my son can make a mean expresso and his pasties aren't too bad either, I'm still working on mine!
Sarah Shaw purchased this House in 1998
Why Sarah Shaw chose Gulval
I have been coming to Penzance for all my life and it holds a special place in my heart. I was very excited to actually move here about 12 years ago and to buy my house. It is a house that is very light and warm and it is impossible not to know what the weather is like outside. It is also in the sun all day long. The house is in a very pretty old village with a beautiful church and excellent pub. It is a very convenient location, about 1 1/2 miles from the south coast and about 5 miles from St Ives and Sennen. Our location, just outside of Penzance, is perfect for exploring Western Cornwall. As well as St. Michaels Mount, St. Ives, The Minack Theatre and Land’s End the Cornish coast offers plenty of hidden beaches and stunning walks.
What makes this House unique
We are sun, food and bathroom obsessed. Your first coffee of the day is in the front garden and then you move gradually around the house finishing with your sundowner in the back garden. We designed the house for beach living so it has a very seaside feel to it. The kitchen is a very sociable room, the cook certainly doesn't get left out of anything. Enough space for everyone to chat whilst dinner preparations are under way, without anyone getting under anyone's feet. It's a hard room to leave even after you have eaten. The island is great for chasing children round (or each other come to that). Downstairs there is an amazing wet room, so you can come in straight from the beach and go straight into the shower. In fact there are two bathrooms and a shower room so no queuing.

Spacious and well equipped home; full of natural light
What a beautiful place to stay! It was great to have such a spacious house with plenty of room for all 7 of us and our thousands of possessions! The wealth of natural light meant that we were happy to stay in and have a few hours of relaxation. We loved the huge kitchen-diner; full of light and more than enough space for us to eat together. The children decamped to the comfortable sitting room,( where the WiFi was much appreciated after a day on the beach..phew!) whereas the adults fought over the amazing window seats to relax and read books from. This is surely the best equipped house we've stayed in; with every conceivable gadget and more besides! The Aga was great for drying clothes as well as cooking on and the abundance of crockery meant it was easy to cook in the evenings. We also loved having the wet room (much easier to tidy up after mucky children!) as well as the other two bathrooms.
The house is also perfectly placed to visit many attractions: St Ives (The Tate and Barabara Hepworth Gardens always a favourite); a lovely walk to Mousehole from Penzance; the Lido in Penzance; our favourite beaches - Perranuthnoe, Praa Sands and Prussia Cove.
All in all an excellent house in a perfect location. We'd love to come back!
Ideal base to see the area
Lovely spacious house ideal for our family, 4 adults 2 children and a small dog.
Easy access to local area, st Michaels Mount, Penzance, Newlyn, Mousehole and beaches. Good local pub and supermarkets almost on the doorstep.
A few niggles with the facilities but didn't detract from our enjoyment overall.
Large house, wonderful position.
Has been said previously but shabby chic describes this house. We were a little bit disappointed when we arrived with our first impressions (group of 7 adults)
There are no carpets anywhere, most of the paintwork has seen better days and the bathrooms are not welcoming.
The house did grow on us. It is warm, well equipped and very, very spacious. It would be wonderful for families with children.
There are large supermarkets a five minute drive away, the beach can be reached in five minutes and there is a great pub just up the hill. The views from the house are magnificent and there are many great walks around. Penzance can be reached in 25 minutes along the coastal path. We would certainly stay here again.
Paradise in Penzance!
We had a great 2 week stay in this lovely and spacious house.
It was ideal for our large family - plenty of space, 3 bathrooms and of course wifi!
Lovely views out the front and a nice enclosed garden.
Great location to explore that end of Cornwall and even the sun made several appearances :)
Very suitable for young and old..great location for reaching the best places in Penwith.
No need to add to the above...
Comfortable, spacious and well-situated
This is a lovely house and we had a great week there. My abiding memory of the house is the space and light. The house is stylishly decorated in bright colours. There are four large, comfortable bedrooms and three bath/shower rooms, one of which is a huge wet-room. The cavernous kitchen/dining room is very well equipped, with an Aga cooker and lots of utensils. So it's a great place to stay and easily accommodates 8 people without feeling at all crowded.
The location is just outside Penzance in the first village beyond the suburbs, so you have the benefit of being in the countryside while being only 20 minutes walk from downtown Penzance. It's easily accessible by car (just half a mile off the A30) and a short taxi ride from Penzance station. The sea is even closer, just 10 minutes walk to the nearest beach.
There is quite a lot to do in the immediate area. Gulval church is directly opposite the house with a dark, mysterious churchyard where palm trees and bamboo grow alongside ancient yew trees. The long distance 'St Michael's Way' footpath goes right past the house. There is a pub/restaurant just up the road in the village but it was temporarily closed when we were there. St Michael's Mount is a slightly longer walk or a short car ride away.
We used our cars quite a lot for day trips. We walked some of the costal paths and moorlands, we visited some of the many galleries in St Ives, and we had a very memorable evening at the Minack Theatre. We visited abandoned tin mines and mining museums, and prehistoric stones, and an iron age village. We even squeezed in a visit to one of the many great gardens in Cornwall. We loved the church at Paul. The Tate St Ives was a disappointment but the many smaller galleries in the town made up for that.
We found some great places to eat out. We particularly liked the Mexico Inn in Long Rock, which is just down the road.
I can entirely recommend this as a place to stay. It's not the cheapest of houses to rent but is good value for what it provides - a very comfortable, spacious and well-situated base for a large group of people.
The South coast is about 1 1/2 miles away, the North is about 5 miles away and beaches in between such as Porthcurno and Sennen are about 6 to 8 miles.
Newquay airport is about a 45 minute run. There are car hire offices in both Penzance and the airport.
About 2 miles from Penzance, close to delightful beaches, cliffs and countryside dotted with places of interest.
