The beautiful town of Tavira: When staying in this accommodation a visit to the beautiful town of Tavira is essential! You will not fail to be enthralled by its unspoilt charm, character and tranquillity. As you wander along the cobbled streets, you'll see an abundance of history dating as far back as 2000BC. A Roman bridge links the 2 parts of the town across the River Gilao, its sides decorated with traditional old bars and restaurants where you can relax and enjoy a peaceful drink or meal. Horse drawn carriages and a small train operate around the town and are perfect for sightseeing and enjoying the peaceful ambience. The many churches (37 in total!), the town castle and the typical fisherman's harbour leading to the River Formosa Natural Park are all places to visit, along with the wonderful daily market selling fresh home grown produce. Tavira Island and its wonderful beach is accessible by ferry boat from the town and offers excellent facilities with a wonderful holiday atmosphere.

Local beach and other things to do: The Algarve is famous for its wonderful sandy beaches and within easy reach are Tavira Island reached by a short ferry ride from the main town (4kms) or Barrill - also around 5kms just along the coast road. By travelling a little further afield there are a good range of things to do for everyone. For nature lovers, forest walks, cruises along the River Guadiana or nature trails along the Ria Formosa Reserve where bird watching is in abundance! Travelling West there are some excellent shopping centres in Faro and Ghia as well as the famous Water Parks and Zoo Marine all easily reached by car or by day trip coach. The Spanish border town of Ayamonte is approx 25 km by car, where the delights of another country can be sampled along with wine, Tapas and shopping. Ayamonte can also be reached by ferry from Vila Real. Seville is about 170km away, and budding historians may enjoy Castro Marim castle.

Golf: This is perfect accommodation for golfers wishing to sample the excellent courses situated in the Eastern Algarve. Within a 20km radius there are 6 courses to choose from. Benamor and the 2 Quintas (Ria and Cima) are the most popular and have fantastic scenery and sea views. The prestigious new Monte Rei course designed by Jack Nicklaus now has its first 18 holes open and is continuing in its development to the second phase offering the height of golfing luxury. Although a costly experience, this is a real treat for golfing fanatics wishing to experience a little high life! Villa Helena is located in a small, peaceful village called Malhao which is situated between St Estevao and Santa Margarida. There are some amenities in Santa Margarida including a very typical Portuguese style restaurant and cafe/bar which is around 15 minutes walk. A short drive takes you to the beautiful town of Tavira

! Once known as the capital of the Algarve, Tavira stands proud amongst Portuguese history books and you will not fail to be enthralled by its unspoilt charm, character and tranquility. As you wander along the cobbled streets, you'll see an abundance of history and wonderful architecture. A Roman bridge links the 2 parts of the town across the River Gilao, its sides decorated with traditional old bars and restaurants - perfect for lazy lunches or a glass or 2!.

On one side of the town there is a large square which has entertainment in the summer months, and by crossing the Roman Bridge to the other side of the town, you will find a little more life in the evenings with a great selection of restaurants tucked away down the streets and a few later opening café/bars. Features and things to visit include the many churches (37 in total!), the Town Castle and the Camara Obscura with its stunning aerial views. There is a range of shops to explore, as well as the old market building recently restored with cafes, shops and artisan, and also the traditional indoor market selling locally grown produce and fresh fish. To enjoy and see the full Tavira aspect, you can take the passenger train which follows a set route around the town, or you can personalize your experience by taking a ‘TUK TUK’ tour in the small vehicles for 2 – 6 persons.

Tavira is the perfect central location, with great bus, train and road networks connecting along the whole of the Algarve Coastline.

LOCAL BEACH - ILHA DE TAVIRA

The Beach Island of Tavira is just stunning. As a natural island separated from the mainland by the River Formosa, it is reached by catching a ferry from the main Tavira Harbour or towards Quatro Aguas. A excellent range of facilities is available including beach bars and a great selection of restaurants suiting most tastes. You can also hire sunbeds and sunshades. During the high summer season, there are also water sports and fun activities for all to enjoy. The sands are lovely and white, the sea is calm and together, these ingredients provide a wonderful tropical beach atmosphere akin to the Caribbean!

OTHER THINGS TO SEE AND DO

…….by travelling a little further afield there are a good range of things to do to suit all tastes. For nature lovers there are forest walks, cruises along the River Guadiana or natures trails along the Ria Formosa Reserve where bird watching is in abundance! By travelling towards the West there are some excellent shopping centres in Faro and Ghia as well as the famous Water Parks and Zoo Marine (wonderful for children), all easily reached by car or by day trip coach (around 45 minutes). From this property it is also easy to take a day trip to Spain. The lovely border town of Ayamonte is not far, and once there you can sample the delights of another country, including wine, tapas and excellent shopping. You can travel by car, or use public transport to get to Vila Real de Santo Antonio and from there take the 15 minute ferry crossing across the Guadiana River between Spain and Portugal. For the more adventurous the vibrant city of Seville is approx 170km away and for budding historians the Castle at Castro Marim is worth a look.
