Farmhouse in Danby, Whitby - Superb base for exploring the North York Moors and Coast
About Katrina Shamel
Forrester's Lodge is owned by the Dawnay Family as part of the Danby and Liverton Estate, Danby was purchased in 1656 from the Earl Danvers, but previously had formed part of the Latimer (subsequently Neville) holdings. Sir William Neville was married to Catherine Parr (the last surviving wife of King Henry VIII). The Dawnay Estate comprises two landholdings situated about 35 miles apart; Wykeham near Scarborough and Danby near Whitby, both in North Yorkshire. The Danby and Liverton Estate is essentially a 11,500 acre grouse moor and a further 3,000 acres of let hill farms, Danby Castle (to include the Court and Jury Rooms), the Moors Centre (former sporting lodge – Danby Lodge) and approximately five miles of the upper reaches of the River Esk (salmon and sea trout fishing).
Katrina Shamel purchased this Farmhouse in 1830

Fantastic location, in a beautiful, peaceful landscape; house perfect for a family gathering
Lovely house, but quite remote
Lovely house, around half a mile from a main road. The only noise we had was from some cows, and the occasional pheasant.
The kitchen is nicely equipped, and the dogs loved the freedom of the garden. Dining room is slightly small for 10 people (we had 9), but not uncomfortably so. Internet worked well, and the TV with Sky was a nice feature though we hardly used it.
Nice walks from the door over to Danby and further. During the day you'll see people in neighboring fields on walks.
Fabulous house & breathtaking location. House is well equipped and very comfortable. Dropped on with the weather....T shirts in February!!
Lovely house for large family group with a dog!
This is a beautiful spacious home-from-home property. Great living space to spread out in and lovely bedrooms. Everything you could need in the kitchen. Terrific location. Windows a bit rattly in the night - but sorted by jamming with something. We had a great break away from it all. Thank you.
Forresters lodge is a beautiful house . Very well equipped and we had a wonderful weekend walking in the area
Would return & would definitely recommend the property.
Four generations of family enjoyed a fantastic week - superb accommodation etc.. Additional comments - local pubs were further away than anticipated. Also, the info sheet gives details of local lady who could cater in: I called her 4 times before & during the holiday & received no response - disappointing because I assumed it was a system that worked, since advertised in the information sheet, needs deleting? However, would return & would definitely recommend the property.
Oh I am sorry that you couldn't get in touch with Jill - I've rung her to find out what the problem was - they were on holiday. I've now put her mobile and home numbers on the information sheet so this shouldnt happen again. Thank you for your lovely comments
The heritage coast at Whitby is a 20 minute drive away. Other pretty fishing villages and secluded beaches are also close by.
Well behaved dogs are welcome, but be aware that the house is located in amongst fields with livestock (cattle and sheep). There are two outdoor kennels available. Please refrain from letting the dogs upstairs or on the furniture.
