Space 1,076 sq. ft.
Property type chalet
Minimum Stay 2 - 7 nights

About the property

3 bedroom, 3 bathroom chalet with mountain and forest views. Direct access to forest walks, 3km from restaurants, 6km from shops and lakes

Nestling in the Vosges Mountains of N.E. France, an easy 350 mile drive from Calais and close to the French/German/Swiss borders, 'Le Cerf' is a well-equipped 3 bedroom, 3 bathroom chalet in the hamlet of Le Grand Valtin. At a height of 850m guests enjoy beautiful views, space, peace and quiet.

Entry to the chalet is through a large porch into a spacious open plan living room, dining room and kitchen with wood burning stove. A large bedroom and bathroom is off the living room area, large enough for a cot and access on to the balcony with patio furniture. Downstairs are 2 more bedrooms, each has its own private bathroom, and garden access. The kitchen is well equipped and modern. The garden is private and enclosed. There is room in the porch to safely keep bikes and skis.

In the summer take part in water sports, boating, swimming or lazing on the beaches of Gerardmer and Xonrupt Longemer lakes. There is supervised swimming and flumes on Gerardmer lake.

In winter it is only 10-15 kms from the best alpine and cross-country skiing resorts of La Bresse and Gerardmer in the Vosges Mountains. There are many smaller skis slopes, one just 500m from the chalet. At 900m it is ideal for children, beginners and those wanting to start skiing before hitting the big slopes! At the bottom is our local auberge where parents and non-skiers can enjoy a 'vin chaude', hot chocolate, meals and other refreshments whilst watching the entertainment on the slopes.

The Alsace vineyards are a short drive away along with a wealth of historic attractions, family activities and wildlife parks, theme parks, walking and cycling in the Ballon des Vosges national park and along mountain summits.

Gerardmer and Xonrupt are well-known for their sporting events and throughout the year there are triathlons, road cycling including the Tour de France on many occasions and off road bike competitions, skiing events, boating etc.

Summer markets full of artisan cheese, charcuterie, fresh fruit and vegetables, wine and local products. Winter Christmas markets in Gerardmer, Colmar, Strasbourg, Kayersberg to name just a few.

About Dawn Keddie

We have owned the property for 13 years and initially rented it whilst still working in the UK. In October 2010 we moved to the Vosges permanently and now live next door, enabling us to look after our guests even better than before. We take every care and opportunity to make your holiday a huge success and you only have to ask and we will do our best to help although weather and 'Acts of God' though are beyond our control!

We are very happy to spend time advising you on the best places to go, where to park, best routes to follow, restaurants etc. without infringing on your privacy and peace and quiet.

Dawn Keddie purchased this chalet in 2004

Why Dawn Keddie chose Ban-sur-Meurthe-Clefcy

In a beautiful hamlet with peace, quiet and beautiful views, wildlife but within a community. Just what we wanted and we travelled around France for several months looking for the ideal area. We knew we wanted a winter and summer season - the Alps too expensive, the Pyrenees too far, the Dordogne too English and only one season though we did find a house we loved. The Vosges - beautiful - very green so it does rain but also lovely hot periods, fantastic Autumns and very pretty Springs with thousands of miniature daffodils in all the fields and a bi-annual daffodil festival. Serious winters; snow from end of December to beginning of March but of course every year is different and there are no guarantees. We found the modern ski resorts of La Bresse and Gerardmer which still retain their traditional features and smaller ski resorts where you can ski through the forest.

There is nothing quite like sitting on the balcony with a glass of wine enjoying it all!

What makes this chalet unique

The property is easy to find especially with my directions sent to you well in advance. Within 10 minutes of leaving the peace and tranquility of Le Grand Valtin you can be by the lakes, ski slopes, centre of town. When there is snow the road past the chalet is snow ploughed and gritted when necessary.

Favourite comments are: the views, 'home from home', everything you could possibly want/need to make your holiday comfortable is supplied, all bedrooms have their own bathrooms.

Most frequent comment from our visitors' book: welcome given and helpfulness of Paul and Dawn.

Guestbook comments from the owner

I just wanted to drop you a note to say how much we enjoyed our stay at Le Cerf last week - we agreed it was definitely our best family holiday so far and this was due to three things.

Firstly, the region is fantastic - so much to do a such a variety whether you want culture or sport, relaxation or action. I think the Southern Vosges are a reasonably secret location hence few crowds and a real sense of escape.

Secondly, the house was great - really well-equipped, with the two essentials that make a real difference to me in holiday homes - comfy seats in the lounge and great showers! The views in the morning when curtains are thrown back are amazing.

Finally, you and Paul were great hosts with fantastic local knowledge that made a real difference to our stay, taking hassle out of our plans. You were there when we needed you without being there too much if that makes sense - you have the balance right.

I have already been recommending you to friends and family and we will d

The gite is beautifully positioned in the Grand Le Valtin. It’s very well equipped and comfortable.

  • 4 of 5

Le Cerf provides wonderful views across the valley particularly from the master bedroom. The log burner is a much needed addition in the winter months and provides a fantastic centre piece as well offering a great source of heat. The owners, Dawn and Paul are very welcoming hosts, and are in hand should you need any help or advice. We visited at Christmas and were treated to a white one, and plenty of fresh snow thereafter. There’s plenty to do straight from the front door; snow walking, sledging etc. etc., and 10 mins from Gérardmer. The gite was decorated with a Christmas tree, champagne chilling in the fridge and a plate of handmade mince pies! All of this thoughtful touches added to the magic of Le Cerf and our holiday.

A perfect week away

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week in this gorgeous cottage and it was absolutely perfect.

The cottage itself is equipped to a very high standard, immaculate clean and very cozy and inviting. The bedrooms and bathrooms on two different levels provided privacy if wanted, the living room with the woodburning stove was well used in the evenings :-)

We found everything in perfect working order and being a cook by heart I indulged the extremely well equipped and organised kitchen.

The location is quiet and because it was in between seasons a lot of restaurants/locations were still closed.

Walks were endless and plenty of information and detailed maps thoughtfully provided by our hosts.

We loved it and will definitely come back, if we may.

Thanks once again to our caring hosts!
