La Gare is a renovated railway house set in large split level gardens, with mature trees, a play area, quiet seating areas, a luxury outdoor kitchen and dining area and a heated outdoor 8m x 4m swimming pool. The House is free of neighbours, yet easily accessible to local towns and major road networks.

This spacious and well appointed family home is in an ideal location to explore the Vendee, as well as providing guests with plenty of space to relax and unwind without living on top of each other. Each can find their own way to enjoy this well loved home, whether relaxing under a mature oak tree, sitting/sunbathing next to the swimming pool, eating outside at the luxurious fully equipped outdoor kitchen, on the patio or the large flat lawns, evening walks on the adjacent footpaths, snuggled on large sofas in the evening for films, TV, games or to simply watch the wood burner flicker - the choice is yours.

Almost the entire property is wheelchair / disabled friendly - from the ground floor bedroom and shower wet room, to the level entrance to the walled garden and outdoor kitchen, the gentle slope up to the pool entrance, and also the slope up to the upper garden.

The ground floor master bedroom can be a suite on its own if desired - nicely secluded from the rest of the house by a small lobby, and with the shower wet room adjacent, you can have all the privacy you need ! It can also make a fabulous family room if required - there is a double sofa bed, or we can put a single bed in the alcove, hardly affecting the space available. This makes La Gare suitable for not just a single or an extended family, but also for 2 families to share, the second shower room upstairs is situated right between the 2 upstairs bedrooms - if you would like any advice on how we can help accommodate you, please give us a call or email - we are always happy to help if we can.

****Important Information****

The heated swimming pool is normally open and available from the first weekend in May until the last weekend in September as standard. During these times the heat pump will keep the water lovely and warm, depending of course on the actual outside temp ! (in May and September if the ambient temperature is too low we will struggle to raise it much above 21 degrees) The cost of heating the pool is therefore included in all rentals within these dates. For all rentals in April and October, the pool may well be available, but this will depend entirely on the current weather and temperatures. For bookings at these times, we will liaise with you on the run up to your holiday, and if the weather is warm enough in the lead up to your holiday we can arrange to heat the pool and make it available for you. The cost of having the pool heated and available for your use will be an additional 50 euros, payable on arrival. The pool will not be available for use from November to March. However the pool garden seating areas and outdoor kitchen can be happily used all year round as required.

We also advise that all electric use is subject to a fair usage policy, and all usage over that will incur costs. If any extra usage is chargeable, we will only charge electric as used over and above the fair usage amount, and at the same cost the electric company charge to us.

Other Charges

During the main season, i.e May to September (incl), we include all linen and towels in the rentals as standard. As with the pool and electric, our prices do reflect this. In the low season, ie October to April (incl), electric will be charged as used, linen and towels will be available for a charge of 10 euros per person, and any wood used for the wood burner will be charged at 60 euros per stere (ie per cubic metre - pro rata).

About Clare & Michael Wallace

We moved to the Vendee over 10 years ago and haven't looked back. We found La Gare, fell in love with it and have enjoyed making into a true family home. We have now however built ourselves a new home a little farther south, and so have the opportunity to share La Gare with others. Many family and friends have come here, enjoying the large gardens, evening walks to the viaduct giving amazing sunsets (glass of wine in hand optional), cycle tracks next to the house or just lying in a hammock under the mature Oak trees. And brand new for 2016, we upgraded to include a brand new outdoor 8m x 4m heated swimming pool, with surrounding luxurious, fully equipped, outdoor kitchen and dining areas. Outdoor living has never felt so good ! Over the years we have also discovered the Mervant forest and the Marais (green Venice) to cycle and canoe as well as the local Abbeys and historical towns and villages to wander around. What more can we say, you just have to come visit.

What makes this house unique

The house itself is situated in its own substantial split level gardens, secured from the road with lockable gates, giving sunshine, shade, breeze and shelter at all times of the day. The new large swimming pool gives another dimension to the grounds - a fabulous place to relax and unwind after a long day sightseeing, or to simply sit and watch the more energetic family members play ! Eating outside is taken to a whole new level with a dedicated luxurious fully equipped outdoor kitchen and dining area, adjacent to the new pool. The house itself has been designed and built to a high specification including the ground floor master bedroom with adjacent wet room, perfect for those who like a little seclusion from their children, or those who might find the stairs a problem. The kitchen/dining room is perfect for creating and enjoying feasts (though we do offer catering if required), with a large dining table easily seating everyone. There is also a log burner for winter bookings, or even for those slightly chillier spring and autumn evenings / early mornings !

Notes on accommodation: The gite is cleaned before your arrival and we ask that you leave it in a tidy and presentable condition, alternatively a cleaning service for the end of your stay is offered for 35 euros if required. We can also provide a catering service to include full 3 course menus for 20 euros per head, or home made ready meals from 10 euros per head (ideal for arrival or last night or after a day out) - all you need to do is warm up and serve. Outside: The substantial gardens are split level providing plenty of shade and sun depending on your needs. The solar heated 8m x 4m swimming pool is truly delightful feature, great to cool off in or just sit by and relax. The new luxury outdoor kitchen and dining area is the most fabulous area though and this is where you will spend most of your holiday - making the most of the glorious weather or simply enjoying a quiet meal and drink on a cool spring or autumn evening. It is fully equipped. A gated wall has been added for the safety of young children, but we do emphasise the need for adult supervision at all times.The mature oak trees shade the hammock as well as provide a home for the swing. There is plenty of outdoor furniture including tables, loungers and umbrellas for shade. There are no neighbours in the near vicinity so privacy is excellent with walls and hedges enclosing the property. Adjacent to the property are cycle tracks and footpaths to nearby woodland and picnic areas. The front area of the garden is secured by lockable gates. Utility Room: Equipped with washing machine, Hoover, broom and mop Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Pre-booked linen and towels are provided. A cleaning service for the end of your stay is offered for 35 euro

Wonderful 2 weeks stay!

We just had a wonderful 2 weeks stay at this delightful old rustic railway house, which has been sympathetically extended. The property is just 10 minutes from the local town and all amenities, yet situated just far enough out in a rural location that you really feel like you are "away from it all". The fully enclosed gardens and pool area are just fabulous. We travelled with our 3 dogs so being fully enclosed was perfect, no fear of dogs wandering off or escaping. Having no neighbours also meant we could listen to our music of an evening out by the pool (cocktail in hand), without fear of disturbing any neighbours. The outdoor pool / cooking area, a relatively new addition, is just lovely, perfect for alfresco dining. The property was fully equipped with everything we needed and the owners Clare & Michael are lovely people, giving us all the privacy we needed, yet on hand to assist with anything we if required. If you are looking for relaxing holiday, away from it all in a peaceful location with lovely walks & countryside on your doorstep, do not hesitate to book this place. Being pet friendly was really our criteria and it doesn't get better than this!

Countryside retreat

Great Family Venue

Lovely place to stay and in reality the pictures do not do it full justice! The pool area is lovely not only for swimming but also utilising the kitchen out there for dining purposes. The owners (Ian & Wendy) couldn't have been more friendly and helpful with their advice not only for their property but also with recommendations in the local area.

Lovely outside area

We stayed for 2 weeks (one week with our sons family). The outside area was lovely, pool was nice. The house itself is neglected. It needs a thorough clean, chips had been left in the oven from the previous people who were there, (we didn't use the cooker because of this.) The windows needed a good clean as did the cupboards. It also took us a couple of days to get the fly situation sorted out. Hence we will not be staying there again.

Owner's Response: We thank our clients sincerely for their review and are very sorry to hear that they feel they did not have the holiday they were looking for. The clients arrived quite early on a cool, wet day, substantially before our check in time of 3pm. We therefore put ourselves under pressure to finish the clean and allow the clients to come in and use the house. In doing so we missed 1 item off our checklist, the interior of the oven, and for this we sincerely apologise. We do however stand by the cleanliness of the rest of the house. The clients family arrived a few days later and unfortunately brought a sickness bug with them, that then affected all but one of the party. We are sure this will have unfortunately significantly affected the quality of their holiday, especially with a baby in tow. We sympathise fully with them and hope they are all now fully recovered. We would not normally respond to a review like this, but in this instance we do have to take issue with the comment of neglect. Over the last 2 years we have invested significant amounts of time, money and effort into the house and pool, and we continue to do so. So far we have built the new pool, landscaped the pool garden, built the outdoor kitchen, totally redecorated the house inside and out, replaced the inside kitchen sink and taps, replaced all the pillows, all the towels, all the bed linen and some of the mattresses. We have also replaced the majority of the curtains, and put new gravel down on the driveway. We supply a large screen up to date TV, a Wii games console with games, books to read and toys for children to play with. We also encourage people to follow us on social media so they can see what we are doing and how much care we are investing in the property. With these clients we even went out of our way to print at home their flight tickets and deliver them early on their day of departure. Finally, we were up at the house to maintain the pool every couple of days throughout the clients' 2 week holiday. We spoke to them on every occasion and checked that all was well. We care passionately about this property and strive to give all our clients the best possible experience. We will occasionally make a mistake, which we will apologise for and do our best to correct as quickly as possible.

Perfect for our needs.

The property was ideally situated away from neighbours for our three dogs and the garden was totally secure with plenty of room for them to run around and lots of places for us to enjoy the sunshine. The swimming pool was fantastic and was used every day as the weather was so hot and the outdoor kitchen area was lovely. The bedrooms were very comfortable and the rest of the house was great. A fantastic holiday which I would recommend to others. Thanks to Ian et al for making our stay so good.

Secluded hideaway in stunning countryside

This was our second stay, having enjoyed it so much last year.

The house is beautiful with spacious accommodation and stunning garden. The pool, once finished is going to enhance it even more as it has been so lovingly thought out.

The whole area is peaceful and beautiful with a feeling of being very rural but with a large town and all its facilities a short drive away.

Great location to explore all of the Vendee, from Vouvant to Fontenay or out to La Rochelle

If you like walking or cycling the old railway lines offer a pretty and safe way of exploring the countryside.

We are already booking our next stay!

Special interest holidays:

The Abbeys and churches of the South Vendee offer an opportunity to see French history in spectacular surroundings. Along with the cathedrals at Poitiers, both Roman and medieval, and the varied churches in the numerous villages and towns in the area.


The beaches of L'Aguillon and La Tranche Sur Mer are only about 1 hours drive away, lengthy, clean & guarded sandy beaches. I'le de Re, one of the west coast of France's best-kept secrets, 80 mins, some stunning beaches with excellent surfing. La Rochelle 60 mins. Les Sables-d'Olonne 90 mins. There is also an artificial beach nearby at St Michael le Cleque


There are 3 airports nearby - La Rochelle, Nantes, and Poitiers are all within easy reach of the House, with a wide number of airlines serving them. The port of St Malo is just over 3 hours. Cherbourg, Caen, Roscoff, La Havre, Boulogne and Calais are all within easy reach too. The new fast train link via Paris on the TGV to La Roche Sur Yon or Poitiers now makes this a viable easy travel option, and we can provide a collection service on request for this or the airports.


Within a 10 mins drive there are the following activities: swimming pools - open air and covered. tennis courts, go carting, horse riding. Mervent forest, rivers for canoeing and cycle paths. The marais (green venice) is just 45 mins drive away, perfect for canoeing and picnics.

Also within a 45 mins drive there are the following activities: Puy du Fou - a spectacular medieval park with day and night shows, medieval gardens, fishing at Pescalis, Europe's premier fishing centre. 90 mins drive Futurescope at Poitiers.

Further Details:

La Chataignerie (5 min drive away) has 2 large supermarkets with pharmacy and cash points, as well as a Lidl store, boulangerie, post office, banks etc. We can also arrange bike hire prior to your arrival as well as hire of an inflatable canoe/s, specialist 2 man very stable canoes ideal for the rivers and canals, self contained in own bag which fits in car boot (no need for roof racks) for 100 euros a week (250 euro deposit required) further details upon request. We can also provide a catering service to include full 3 course menus for 20 euros a head or home made ready meals from 10 euros a head (ideal for arrival/ last night or after a day out) all you need to do is warm up and serve. For those arriving late on the day of arrival we can organise a shopping service for basic food and drink. We will also be more than happy to guide you to local supermarket upon arrival.

Did you know? The mervant forest is about 10 mins away, this area of over 5000 hectares is the largest forest area in the Vendée. The meandering river highlights a steep and rocky terrain with dense and varied vegetation where oak trees dominate. The heritage of this natural site reflects a strategic location and sustained activity: villages, bridges, dams and mills such as that of St Luke on the Vendée river which drains a catchment area of around 400km².

If the forest Massif remains a shrine to the memory of Father de Montfort, it is nonetheless a centre of outdoor activities for all those who dream of living in the open air. Hiking , on horseback, bicycle, on foot or water

But the Natur'Zoo, the boating and mountain biking center, the park acrobatics in the trees, fishing, climbing, visits guided tours and other nightlife wake the imagination!

Changeover Day:
Normally Saturday to Saturday, however outside of peak season this may be negotiated with the owners. Part weeks and long weekends will also be considered. The property must be vacated by 10am and will be available by 3pm.

All prices shown are for the house per week/night, for up to 8 people , and include all utilities during the high season (July and Aug,other times electricity charged at currant rate) Welcome pack including tea, coffee, store cupboard basics supplied & initial complimentary BBQ charcoal.will be provided. A 25% deposit secures the booking (flexible options available), with the balance payable 8 weeks before arrival. Outside the high season discounts can be offered for stays 3 weeks or more.

There is an optional cleaning fee of (45 euros) that you can pay so that at the end of your stay we take away the worry of cleaning the gite prior to departure - this can be paid at time of booking or during your stay-
