About Chrissie Taylor

After spending many happy holidays in the Lake District with our three children we eventually bought Bluebell Cottage 10 years ago. We have made the cottage a home from home as we still use it ourselves. Our three children, now all grown up, love the cottage and the Lake District, especially Ambleside as it is so convenient.

Chrissie Taylor purchased this cottage in 2005

Why Chrissie Taylor chose Ambleside

We bought Bluebell Cottage because we wanted somewhere to escape to and came across this delightful property whilst looking for other properties in the area. Bluebell Cottage appealed to us straight away because it is set above the village of Ambleside in a quiet backwater away from the crowds and has stunning views across the fells. It is in a great position for walkers as the cottage is centrally located for exploring the Lake District and there are also great walks from the doorstep. The cruises that run the length of Lake Windermere are five minutes walk away at Waterhead and from here you can hire rowing boats. With the village of Ambleside only a few minutes walk from the cottage there is so much to do and see in the area you can never be bored. We love it.

What makes this cottage unique

Bluebell Cottage has everything you need to make your stay extremely comfortable. It has been decorated to our taste and is a cosy haven of peace. As you enter the cottage there is a porch with a range of storage for boots and coats - great for wet weather and sailing gear. In the sitting room there is a wood burning stove for cosy evenings by the fire. There is a dining table in the sitting room which pulls out to seat eight comfortably so that you have the choice to eat in style or at the large pine kitchen table. The dining kitchen is fully equipped with all that you could possibly need. The village of Ambleside, which sits at the top end of Lake Windermere, has a range of restaurants offering a variety of choice, plus numerous shops, information centre, library and great cinema.

Notes on accommodation: The cottage is set in a square of cottages and outbuilding. The land around the cottages has shared access therefore we are unable to accept pets. The accommodation is for a maximum of 5 people, in addition there is one travel cot available for infants. Parking is available for one car outside the front of the cottage and on the road side. Outside: The cottage is one of 7 set in a square made up of cottages, old wash houses and coal sheds. The rear grassed area is for use by all the cottages. Bluebell Cottage has a small paved patio area outside the kitchen door where there is a table and chairs. At the front of the cottage there is a bench where you can sit and enjoy the beautiful view. In the summer an additional table is stored in the porch for use outside so that you can also have dinner catching the evening sun whilst overlooking the fells.

Bluebell Cottage. Quiet location above Ambleside, Stunning views. Very Comfy.
average rating of 4.736842 based on 20 reviews

Spacious cottage good location just minutes from Ambleside centre and for brilliant walks.

  • 4 of 5

The cottage had everything we needed for our weeks walking holiday. Only 3 of us but could easily accommodate 5 people and good for self catering. Very comfortable for relaxing after a hard day on the fells. All clean and tidy when we arrived, used a key safe for access which worked well. Only outdoor space was a small shared courtyard area. Only slight problem was the parking, a bit tricky when everyone there, once had to park around the corner.

Lovely cottage great location with everything you require

For the walker it's an ideal starting point for many varied walks and then a debrief drink in one of the many characteristic pubs

Very cosy with all the amenities one needs for a 5 day stay.

  • 5 of 5

Comfy beds; well appointed kitchen; cosy lounge, dining room; good washing machine and great to have a tumble drier. Also perfect to be able to walk to town. Only downside, if you have more than 1 car there is only guaranteed parking for one directly outside the cottage and it was important not to park with any part of the car outside the neighbours' window. Although there was free parking in the street, it was at times hard to come by. The front shower room was fantastic (great pressure and hot water) and the back bath super, but shower not so good, so those showering used the shower room.

Lovely views and great location for Ambleside

  • 4 of 5

Cottage had plenty of space for a family of 4 and all the facilities we needed. Being an old property it had a few quirks. Parking sometimes difficult.

Perfect place to enjoy the Lakes (and mountains!)

  • 5 of 5

We (family with 3 teenage boys) had a wonderful stay at Bluebell Cottage at the end of October. The cottage is in a brilliant location, quiet on the edge of Ambleside but only a short 5 minute walk down the hill into the village centre. We parked outside the house when we arrived and didn't get back into the car until we left a week later, there are plenty of walks and attractions on the doorstep. The views (especially the sunsets) are wonderful, and the house was well heated and comfortable, with plenty of space and everything you need for an enjoyable stay. Chrissie and David were very friendly and easy to communicate with, and the local help was very efficient. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend this house and hope to return again soon.

Easy access is by car, or by rail to Windermere station which is 15 minutes taxi ride away. The nearest airport is Manchester which is approx. 2 hours away. There is parking for 1 car directly outside the cottage and on nearby streets.

The picturesque village of Ambleside is 2 minutes walk downhill from Bluebell Cottage. The lake ferries are 10 minutes walk away and Windemere town is 15 mins. by car. There are numerous places of interest in the area depending on your interests. You will find arts and crafts houses, cinemas, sailing, rowing, horse riding, beautiful gardens, quad biking and gourmet restaurants all within easy reach. There is a tourist information centre situated in the post office in the centre of the village.

Further Details:

There are a couple of small supermarkets in Ambleside and a Tesco Express. In Windermere, next door to the railway station, is Booths Supermarket which has an extensive range of quality foods. We recommend stocking up there en route to the cottage and shopping locally for top ups. Freddie Garside is the best butcher in the village -you'll find his tiny shop up the road right of the post office and past the pub. There are cash machines in the village and outside Tesco supermarket.

Parking in the village is free, however it is time limited and you will need to display a disc to show your time of arrival. There are some in the cottage and they are also available for free from most shops, information centre and post office. There is jazz every Saturday night at Zeferellis and folk singing twice a week in the Unicorn pub, which is up the road to the right of the post office.
