We purchased our farmhouse 26 years ago and have gradually renovated it to provide a light, spacious, comfortable home. It sits on it's own at the end of a single track lane in the Calvados countryside but within easy driving distance of many local attractions. The area provides opportunities for sightseeing (landing beaches, museums, Bayeux with the cathedral and tapestry, numerous towns and villages etc.), walking and cycling in the beautiful countryside, swimming and sporting activities at Omaha beach and along the coast, sampling the local produce, and ample time for simply relaxing.

About Viki Burnage
We bought 'Talvast' as a family home in 1991 when our children were very young (0 to 5 years). We all really enjoyed our visits, particularly during the long summer holidays. And we still enjoy visiting, as do they, along with family and friends as often as we can. 'Talvast' is owned by Cath, Phil and Viki who are pictured here, left to right with Viki's niece (between Cath and Phil) enjoying a sunny walk along the cliffs at Omaha beach. Cath, Phil and Viki have been great friends for....well longer than we care to mention!!

A bit tired and dirty on arrival
The cottage looked much better on the internet than in reality. It had not been cleaned properly before our arrival and we spent a couple of hours cleaning the whole house, especially the two bathrooms and removing excessive cobwebs. All of the matresses's on the double beds were out of shape and in need of replacing. The dining room was plagued by hornets getting in through the wood burner via the chimney and a wasps nest was seen active in the same chimney. This led to us vacating the downstairs bedroom as it is entered via the dining room and closing this part of the house off.
On a positive the kitchen was well equipped and the games barn was a great idea. It was well located for our needs and we recommend the fast train from Bayeux for a day trip to Paris.
Based on the experience of our visit we would not use this cottage again and cannot recommend it to others.
We were so upset and surprised to read such a negative review, the first we have ever had as evidenced by the 7 x 5 and 2 x 4 star reviews that other visitors have left in addition to the very positive unrated comments. We were unaware of the hornets nest in the chimney and had it removed immediately. This was unpredictable and can happen anywhere, especially in the open Normandy countryside. As for the cleaning and the state of the beds, it is hard to comment on that, it is not something that anyone has ever fed back to us before. However, we take this sort of feedback very seriously so will ensure these issues are reviewed and dealt with. We know what it is like to arrive at your holiday destination and be disappointed - it's the last thing we want to have happen with our guests.
Just fantastic, the family never want to leave!
Another lovely holiday at Talvast. The farmhouse was fantastic, really well equipped and comfortable. Went with my brother and his family this year (8 of us), there was plenty of room for us all and loads to do....we all enjoyed the games in the barn.....pool, table football....and the table tennis in the open barn. The weather was variable so all this was really handy and enjoyed BBQing in the garden when the sun shone! Days out to Cerisy Forest, Festyland, Arrowmanche with the 360 degree cinema (very moving) and the mini golf (very fun), and Omaha beach is difficult to beat. All in all a great week, thanks very much, we’ll undoubtedly be back!
Ben, thank you for the lovely comments and it was wonderful to have you stay again. So glad you enjoyed your holiday and hopefully see you again soon!
Perfect house for all ages with plenty of extras to entertain if weather poor
We had a great family gathering over the New Year, it's perfect for all ages with lots of extras for poor weather. Plenty to visit in the area and although the weather was very wet it didn't spoil the holiday. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
Great for Kids and History Lovers
The house was wonderful! We had a very nice stay. The kids LOVED the backyard and the ability to run around and make noise without disturbing neighbors. There were several nice touches as well like the welcome basket that truly made it special. All the major historical sites were less than 30 minutes away. We made some wonderful memories. Thank you for opening up your home to us.
Lovely family place
The is a well-equipped family home, with lots of space and lots of things to entertain the kids! Lovely peaceful setting as well, we'd thoroughly recommend this to anyone, it is a very handy distance from Cherbourg and Caen ferries too.
A re-visit to one of our favourite places!
So, we recently had our fourth visit to Talvast and every time is as enjoyable as the last. This time we went on our own with friends joining us a few days into our stay (4 adults and 4 children - who really enjoyed sharing the dorm room). The amount of space in and around the house is great - if you want to stay put for the day there is plenty to do inside and out. And if you want peace and quiet, there's plenty of that to be had as well, the house is surrounded by beautiful countryside. Loads to do in area as well - spoilt for choice. Thanks Viki, Cath and Phil, a lovely time as always, we'll undoubtedly be back.
