Le Mas du Coq is a charming stone-built C. XVII Languedoc farmhouse, cool in summer and full of architectural interest, renovated with style and equipped to a high standard. On the edge of a peaceful hamlet on the borders of the Cevennes (World Heritage site), just outside the pleasant market town of Anduze. It has stunning views over vineyards, olive groves and unspoilt countryside. The secluded garden and a wide upper terrace offer panoramic views and multiple choices of sun or shade, with a private electrolysis salt-water pool, 9mx3mx1.8m, easy on the skin and long enough to exercise as well as relax. A large kitchen downstairs, and a second kitchen upstairs add flexibility especially for two sharing families or three generations together. Our English-speaking representative is welcoming and responsive. Our first guests wrote' The photographs do not do your lovely house justice. How true!

About David Reece

We are a retired but energetic couple, who both speak French. We know France well, but the Gard was a discovery which we believe compares very favourably against other French holiday areas for sun, good value, and interesting activities.

When we arrive at Le Mas du Coq, Diane inspects the roses and other plants in case loving care is need, while I keep the paintwork fresh. Then it's on to the serious stuff - walking, swimming, tennis, French cuisine in our great kitchen with all the garden herbs, exploring ever more places of interest, and oh! relaxing.

When it's time to leave I have to be dragged away. Judging by the comments in our visitors' book, I am not the only one!

Why David Reece chose Massillargues-Attuech

We visited John, a friend who has been helping people renovate old houses in France for many years. Without a thought of buying, when we heard that St Roman was for sale, we went to look. We pushed through the rusty fence, up to the balcony and the views. We couldn't see inside, and the ground floor had only been occupied by the farm animals, but the next day we bought it! For the next two years we worked with John and his very professional builders to make it the lovely house it now is. The plan was always to rent it out, and that concept helped to design it as a great place for holiday-makers. For example, lots of loos and lots of different sitting-areas. And of course a lovely pool. It was only later we realised that this a lovely part of France with lots to do for all ages.

What makes this farmhouse unique

It is unusual in these parts to have a large balcony on the first floor. This gives us a welcome breeze in summer, shade and sun, lovely views over vineyards, olive groves and the Cevennes, a place for a sunset drink and later stargazing in an unpolluted sky.

Guests have commented on the safety of the robustly fenced pool and the enclosed garden, allowing parents with small children to relax. Other guests have enjoyed the layout with large salons and two kitchens which allows two families or three generations to congregate easily but also have their own space.

The village 'place' immediately outside allows a game of petanque (supplied) and extra parking (2 spaces within).

When we started looking for a base for our holiday, we felt it was important to book somewhere within an hour's drive of Carcassone which we had always wanted to visit. However, once we saw the details for Le Mas du Coq, that requirement suddenly seemed unimportant! (For the record, it takes about 2.5 hours by car to reach Carcassone from the property). The house is wonderful, with comfortable accommodation for 8 people although in our case there were just 4. And with its two kitchens and several bath/shower rooms, it's ideal for friends or families holidaying together. The pool was a huge hit with us - after a busy morning sightseeing, we'd come back to cool off in it. Inside, there are games, books, a football table and other distractions although to be honest, a good meal and a bottle of wine was enough entertainment for us most evenings. The location of the house was perfect for us, too - peaceful, in the countryside, yet within a 10-15 minute drive to a decent-sized town. Anduze, the town in question, is really lovely without being overly touristy and the local people were very friendly, and extremely patient with our dodgy French. We shopped at the local supermarket on the edge of the town nearly every day, and enjoyed drinks/ice-creams in the heart of the town. Tip: the house book is full of recommendations of places to visit. We followed a good few of these recommendations and thoroughly enjoyed them, especially Sommieres and also the steam train from Anduze to St Jean du Gard. Great fun for all ages. The Saturday market at Uzès was also well worthwhile. And we did make it to Carcassone! In summary, we loved the house, the area and everything about this holiday and would certainly return.

Notes on accommodation: Internet WIFI available, or you can plug the cable on the desk in the corner of the upper salon into your laptop. No computer supplied. Outside: The 9mx3m salt-water electrolysis pool is 1.8m at deep end. There is a large dining table and chairs on the pool terrace, with sun loungers/easy chairs for 8. The balconies and separate garden divisions with mature trees offer many opportunities for quiet leisure away from the main garden area. There is separate barbecue area with brick-built barbecue and table/chairs for eight. The large upper balcony has sun and shade and wonderful views. There is a petanque set for use on the village 'place' which is adjacent. The garden is enclosed, with parking for two cars, and more space immediately outside on the 'place'. The garden and pool are maintained by local experts. The garden has rosebeds and Mediterranean shrubs, and lots of herbs for the enthusiastic chef! An outside building houses sunbeds, loungers, and many other chairs for the garden and terrace, and also has a toilet and can be used as a pool changing room. The pool has a fresh-water shower. Utility Room: The well-appointed upper kitchen can be used as an additional facility, with oven, microwave, hob, fridge and dishwasher. It is particularly useful for the large upper balcony. People on the upper floor can keep drinks and snacks, baby food, close by. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Large quality bath towels, pool towels and pure cotton linen is supplied. Property is cleaned and linen changed on changeover or after two weeks. Other: The upper salon has an internet connection and a wifi browser which connects throughout the house.

Dream Holiday Home

This place is magical. Gorgeous old house, fabulous views, roses and lavender growing round the pool...we loved it.

The house and pool are even better than the photographs suggest - but it's the layout of the property that is its greatest strength. It's a big house by any standards, so it suits large family groups - but it's cleverly designed in such a way that one can always drift away to find a quiet spot to read or snooze or sunbathe. The spacious salons, the L-shaped balcony, the shade of two large trees, the gravelled barbeque area...all perfect secret spaces to retreat to. In practical terms the house is so easy to live in - both the upstairs and downstairs kitchens are fully equipped; there are plenty of loos (including an outside loo) and the gardening, linen and pool-care are all taken care of.

The best thing about the sleeping arrangements is that the house is divided into upper and lower apartments (divided by a sturdy red door). All our kids (and one set of parents) slept in the upper apartments - so when the little ones woke at the crack of dawn they had the run of the upper space (two bedrooms, large sitting room with telly, kitchen and sunny balcony). And only one set of parents had to burrow their heads under the pillows!

We had three little children with us (under-fives) and an eleven-year-old. Big outings included the Steam Train, the Bambouseraie, the Haribo factory, and the Grottes de Desmoiselles. Little outings (which were just as popular!) were to the market and the playpark in Anduze, and a stroll down the hill to watch the horses grazing. And the nearest lovely beach is within an hour away. The kids were also very happy just exploring the property and swimming.

Grown-up outings included several more far-flung markets, and a day in Ales, visiting the stunning but sadly neglected cathederal, the Pierre Andre Benoit art gallery (which is absolutely not to be missed if modern art is your "thing" - they have Picassos and Picabias) and the dusty-but-charming Colombier museum (beaux-arts & archeologie).

A wonderful, unforgettable holiday.

Oh, and good for bird-watching - we saw hoopoes and heard Scops Owls.

Wonderful house in a beautiful part of France

Le Mas du Coq is a wonderful old house in a quiet, peaceful hamlet, with stunning views. It is spacious and would easily accommodate two families, but also feels comfortable if (as we were this year) only two are staying.

It has been beautifully restored and maintained both inside and out and really feels like a home. All the rooms are well equipped, but if you want to practise your French cuisine, the kitchen is fantastic - clearly designed and kitted out by a cook (including recipe books)!

The owners - David and Diane - are always quick to respond to enquiries and are very helpful, offering lots of advice on things to see and do and Passos, the house manager, is also delightful.

We love this part of France and have been visiting the area for many years. We have favourite places that we have visited time and again - Uzes, Sommieres, Nimes, Collias (canoeing to the Pont du Gard), the Bambouserie, as well as local vineyards ( several recommended in the house book), and the property is well situated to explore numerous places without having to drive too far. These days we're happy to just relax at this fabulous house doing nothing much more energetic than nipping into Anduze (lovely little town) for a coffee or lunch but always make sure to visit the local potteries to add to our collection.

We are just back from our second visit to le Mas du Coq and have already booked our third for next year - Can't wait!

Rural French Idyll

This is far and away the best holiday home we ever stayed in. Just didn't want to leave! Four good sized bedrooms (and 3 bathrooms, all beautifully appointed) easily accommodated the 3 generations of our extended family. The kitchens (there's 2!) are superbly equipped so we lacked for nothing. The gardens and patios are lovely, and there are so many places to sit out (shade is always available). The pool is safe and surrounded by a security fence and gate. Even though it was blisteringly hot when we stayed (high 30s) the interior was cool, all the bedrooms have a fan so sleeping was no problem. David, the owner, is really helpful and approachable and he has a local chap (Passos) who looks after the place and is really helpful and pleasant. Can't wait to go back,

Wonderful home in beautiful surroundings.

We had a lovely time in the very spacious and comfortable Mas du Coq. The countryside around the house, a mass of wild flowers in spring, is a network of tracks, lanes and paths - perfect for walking or cycling routes to suit anybody and everybody. Pretty, friendly nearby towns and villages and a wealth of information supplied in the house about places of interest, market days (Uz​è​s is a must), etc. We left Le Mas du Coq already planning our next visit. No hesitation whatsoever in giving a 5-star rating.

Excellent accommodation

A beautiful property, very tastefully furnished giving a homely feel. It is very well equipped in both kitchens and plenty of extra blankets, if needed, for the beds.

We hadn't visited the area before but we were delighted to discover lots of good walking routes, nice markets and plenty of vineyards.

The owner, David has been most helpful before we booked and leading up to our visit, providing us with good information making the stay a very relaxing holiday.

We have no problem in recommending a stay in this beautiful house.

Owner's Response: Our guests had chosen a great time of year for walking in this lovely area, and we have a lot of information available (by app now as well) for keen and less keen walkers! September/October are also good times to walk.

The best beaches are to be found down on the Camargue, which is about 45 minutes away. It is worth exploring but Le Grau du Roi and Les Espigettes are safe and sandy. Les Espigettes is generally regarded as one of the best beaches in France and is worth a visit. It is reasonably unspoilt. Also recommended is the beach at Maguelene south of Montpellier reached via Palavas-les-Flots.


Ryanair operates to Nimes (Garon) and Montpelier; 40/60 minutes by car. British Airways Gatwick-Montpelier. A car is essential: rental from Nimes, Marseilles and Montpelier airports, and Nimes train station. A regular TGV service operates from Paris to Nimes (4.4 hrs), or from Lille, which connects with the Eurostar. Note: timetables are seasonal and need to be checked. By road: the most direct is the A7 Auto route through Lyons leaving at Junction 19 (Bollene).


A good bakery and supermarket: 3km. Market town Anduze (with good shops and supermarkets 5k. Nimes 25k. Uzes 30km. Pont du Gard 33k. Montpelier 40k.

Further Details:

Anduze and Alès have retained their old-world character. In Anduze, there is an excellent market on Thursdays, and a popular flea-market on Sundays. In summer there are free music shows in Alès. The Saturday Market in the provencal town of Uzes is a place to admire the architecture and people-watch while being dazzled by the wares.

From the railway station in Anduze part of the old industrial railway has been preserved and small trains, either steam or diesel, wind up through tunnels and over gorges to the little market town of St Jean du Gard (Tuesdays). Very scenic.

Just outside Anduze the Bambouserie (bamboo collection) and the grotto at Trebuc are famous.

The area is rich in wildlife. For flamingoes, kingfishers etc and horses go to the Camargue, east of Les Espigettes and follow the signs.

For local canoeing go to Collias which is just outside Uzes. You can canoe 8 km down to Remoulin, going under the Pont du Gard, and then be bussed back.

Centre Equestre des Abeilles at Clairan (about 10 mins by car on the Sommieres road). Accompanied hacking at about E15 per hour. There is an equestrian centre outside Ledignan. Direction Ales and then take the Vezenobres turning to the right and the equestrian centre is on the right.

Just outside Bagard, near Anduze, there's a safe but fun tree-climbing circuit for all ages!

Tennis at Anduze and Quissac. The Tennis Club on right just before reaching Anduze is very welcoming. There are four outside courts and two covered.

There are numerous wine co-operatives in the area, notably at Tornac and Massaillargues. Excellent wine and worth taking home! Le Grand Chemin vineyard at Savignargues just SW of Lédignan and the vineyard at Baruel off the D982 south of Tornac have some quality wines and are very hospitable, with tasting.The Pont du Gard is the largest surviving Roman aqueduct, while the Roman amphitheatre at Les Arènes puts on excellent summer concerts.

And everywhere great walking!

Prices are quoted in GBP but can be paid in the equivalent in Euros, both by bank transfer 30% deposit to secure, remainder payable 8 weeks before, with returnable breakages deposit of £300. This is returned to your bank account one week after you leave, providing all is left in good order. In low season (November-March) electricity is extra, otherwise no extras. Free wood for the fireplaces.

Changeover Day:
In mid and high seasons the changeover day is Saturday, otherwise we are flexible. Arrive after 4.30pm, leave by 9.00am.

Notes on prices:
Returnable breakages deposit of £300. If payment is in Euros, €300 delivered on arrival to save transfer charges on return.

In low season (November-March) electricity is extra, charged at cost. Wood is available at no cost for the wood-burning stoves.

Christmas/ New Year is at £850 pw (Specific dates negotiable).
