About Sue Simpson

Fowey residents since 2002.

Sue Simpson purchased this apartment in 1999

Why Sue Simpson chose Fowey

Having visited Fowey regularly since childhood, my husband and I bought Spinnaker in 1999 as a holiday home, when the property was newly formed as part of six apartments known as Galleon Flats. Since moving to Fowey full time in 2002 the apartment has been a very successful holiday let, with many visitors returning year after year. We have continued to use the apartment ourselves over the years, and still do, firstly because we love it, and secondly to ensure it is comfortable for visitors, there is nothing like first-hand experience!

What makes this apartment unique

The apatment is tucked away down a private passageway off the main street - almost a secret location!

Once up in the apartment, it is quiet, relaxing, light and airy. A roof terrace has been added from the beginning of 2015 so now visitors can go up to the terrace to sit and enjoy the atmosphere of the town and harbour while still being very private and secluded. This is the only one of the Galleon Flats with any outside space which is a huge advantage to the apartment - a real gem in the heart of Fowey.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We were pleasantly surprised by the Flat, the location & Fowey, everything was very good & we enjoyed it all very much. Thanks again, I will thoroughly recommend you & your flat to family & friends.

A lovely apartment and very well equipped. Everything is of a high standard.

Great place!!

  • 5 of 5

The apartment is extremely clean, bright and fresh. Well equipped with decent crockery which was pleasant. It is of a good size and doesn't feel cramped at all. The Bedroom and en suite again are beyond adequate. However, the property comes into it's own with the roof terrace. Access is via a large glass hatch which fills the lounge/kitchen area with light. The steps are fairly steep, but you made the 2 flights of stairs the the front door so just take a couple of goes to get used to it. the terrace itself has glorious views over the River and the town. It receives the sun all day facing South West (I think) and is a real sun trap- we sat out for lunch and until the sun disappeared (November). This would be paradise in summer.

Access to the property is by a gate off the main road and couldn't be more central for eating, shopping etc. The town itself is picture postcard stuff with crafty type shops and makes a good explore. There is a small limited convenience store outside the gate and 50m right on the opposite side of the road. It is expensive as you'd expect. A large Tesco is about 15mins drive away in St Austall, which if you do The Eden Project or a combined Mevagissey /Lost Gardens of Heligan trip you will pass.

There are a number of pubs and restaurants within a couple of minutes stroll. Havener's Bar & Grill on the harbour has a good size eating area in and out with food being good and service first class. The Galleon Inn is next to the property and we didn't like it and felt the food and service substandard. The Lugger Inn seems a very 'locals' place and isn't really an eating place we thought. it is with regret that the nicest pub- The Ship- is one we didn't eat at. The food looked amazing and the atmosphere really good with an open fire. There is an Indian and an Italian Bistro within metres too.

This is a place we would like to return to and is excellent value for money as you don't pay for unused bedrooms.

Go on then, a negative or two. The directions could have been clearer once you hit Fowey,or perhaps we were tired after a 5 hour drive. Also the radio in the kitchen area is next to useless and I'd recommend Sue invest in a DAB.

Small but homely, perfect central position.

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying here. The owner was very helpful. It was easy to access and simple instructions helped.

Brilliant central position with ferries, cafes and restaurants a few paces away.

Happily we had sun and blue skies for our walks along the coastal path.

Hidden Gem

  • 5 of 5

Spent a lovely February week here.

Very clean , cosy, all amenities supplied. The excellent roof terrace addition is a perfect south facing spot to sit and view river one side and church the other.

Easy central location with bars and restaurants and boutique style shops on the same road. We would definitely recommend the ferry to Polruan and the Hall walk over the cliffs and amazing views especially Lantic Bay. The walk to Gribben Lighthouse is also worth it.

Fowey Town Quay and harbour is two minutes walk away. The local beaches at Whitehouse and Ready money are a few minutes easy walking along the Esplanade. The coastal footpath to the west starts from the mouth of the harbour about 15 minutes walk from the apartment, and a short ferry crossing to Polruan on the other side of the harbour, starts the coastal path to Polperro and Looe.

The nearest airport is Newquay, about 25 miles. The nearest railway station is at Par, approx 4 miles. Busses run hourly between St Austell, Par and Fowey.

Local taxis are available for pick up, pre-booking required. Use of a car is not essential for visitors staying locally in the town, but is necessary to explore further afield.

The Eden Project is six miles away, the Lost Gardens of Heligan, near Mevagissey, are 12 miles away. The National Trust's Lanhydrock House is about 8 miles, and Padstow on the north coast is about 40 minutes' drive.

The historic port of Charlestown, 7 miles away, is home to a number of tall ships and often featured in films and TV programmes.
