About Jana and Tom Stotler

Tom and Jana moved to Puerto Viejo in 2010 to pursue their dream of living in Costa Rica. They fell in love with the beautiful, laid back town of Puerto Viejo where the diversity of cultures has made everyday a learning experience. Jana was originally from Wyoming and moved to Colorado in her late 30's while Tom spent most of his life in the Denver, Colorado and surrounding mountains area.

Jana and Tom Stotler purchased this cottage in 2016

Why Jana and Tom Stotler chose Puerto Viejo de Talamanca

We chose Puerto Viejo because we fell in love with the area the very first time we came here. In fact, we actually bought our home on our first visit. We had been to Costa Rica many times before but there was just something magical about this place and we decided this is where we belonged.

What makes this cottage unique

We can sit in our outdoor living room and watch and photograph all sorts of wildlife including sloths and birds. The beautiful garden is peaceful and we find it very relaxing to work in the garden and watch the progress of all of our plants and trees.

Home away from home

  • 5 of 5

This is the perfect not so big house. On a small property as they all are, it is totally secluded with its own forest and tree population hammering at your senses. The rain sounds as it should on the tin roof at night, while you sleep in a breezy, bug proof chalet with wide open windows and fans cooling you off. The house is all made of local wood carefully seasoned and oiled to perfection, with a tiled bathroom and a workable little kitchen, gas range, small electric oven, fridge and sink. The owners, Tom and Janna Stotler have thought of everything, and Tom pops in each day to see if you need anything. We began to rely on his twinkling funny/cynical perspective on life in the jungle, and his help getting to the pertinent sites. We spent a glorious week there in Puerto Viejo, ogling the authenticity of a small Caribbean town. We bought some gorgeous clothes from the shops that one can't find anywhere else. Fruit and coconuts are on every corner and one can buy meat on a stick at any time of the day for very little. This is a multicultural area. The ocean offers a great surfing opportunity and the locals give a free show daily at their special beach. Playa Negra is over the road from the Tree House, and the swimming is excellent. If you can come by a machete you can cut down and drink your own coconut milk!

Fantastic!!! Awesome!

  • 5 of 5

This is such a awesome little bungalow. Our little buddy (the sloth) we saw almost everyday in one of the trees directly in front of the place. Saw Toucans also on the property. It's less than one mile to Puerto Viego which is nice. Tom is SO helpful, offering suggestions and is able to answer any and all questions that you may have. It's a beautiful place with all natural local wood that was used when he built it. Has an outdoor shower in back too which is nice. You will not be disappointed - believe me. We will be back!! Thanks again Tom for a wonderful trip. We saw TONS of wildlife in that area of the country. Can't wait for my wife to put the photo book together. Lots of memories.

Perfect jungle hideaway

  • 5 of 5

What a lovely little hideaway; near charming Puerto Viejo, gorgeous beaches, and Jana and Tom are the perfect hosts. They think of everything: guidebooks, torches, a cellphone, wine, beach-chairs, your own personal mama and baby sloths in the tree outside!

Tropical escape

  • 5 of 5

We’ve used many VRBO accomodations and enough cannot be said about each being wonderful accomodations. But Casa Allegra was different because the owners were present, where in the past, we have never met owners before. Besides a most beautiful country and charming town we enjoyed the generosity of Tom Stotler. Tom offered upon our arrival to drive us into town for groceries but even more generous was his offer to drive us to a MaCaw Preservation site that I know he’s seen many times, having to wait below a hour or while we enjoyed viewing these beautiful birds. How generous! Now about the casita. Charming nestled in a dense tropical forest and equipped with just about everything you would need. Tom even provides a cellphone for his guest to use and take with you on your tours programmed with phone numbers for transportation! Wow! Trust me it was a life saver considering I was having difficulty with my mobile phone which would have left us without any way to look up tours, make calls, or stay in touch with family back home!

Ok, back to the Casita. It was so cosy, bed comfortable, but even better was the nice hot shower! The kitchen was stocked with the necessities for preparing simple meals when not going out to enjoy the towns cuisine. At night the rain showers would lull you to sleep after a day of touring or walking about experiencing Playa Negro culture and people. Tom even provided us with bottled water. How thoughtful a host! He made sure he was available to answer questions, offer suggestions on what we might find interesting and help in anyway. I can’t say enough about his and Jana’s hospitality.

We walked everywhere being that the center of town and the beach was so close, we felt safe and found the locals friendly and helpful. Knowing a little Spanish could be helpful though but all in all we communicated with these friendly folks well enough.

We had a wonderful young woman Independent taxi driver we bonded with and she was our primary driver our entire time. Natalia. Hope anyone reading this review can find her because she was a joy. Maybe her number is still in Tom’s cellphone for I’ve misplaced it unfortunately.

Enjoy the sloths because they are the cutest little animals ever. Monkeys too and those funny toucans very mischievous! All in all we had a wonderful time and I can’t say enough about this Casita and it’s owners!

Amazing Stay! Pura Vida!

  • 5 of 5

We arrived at Casita Alegre following a few days in Bocas Del Toro. We had never been to either destination so our anxiety was higher than usual. It was somewhat difficult to find since our shuttle dropped us off at the head of the road “Casa Amma” (come to find out Costa Rica does not have addresses …you’ve been warned). We thought nothing of it…cinched our backpacks down and took in all the beautiful sounds and sights as we pushed forward. A few twists and turns and realized we were close but no cigar…feeling somewhat stuck since we couldn’t contact our hosts without our shuttle’s WiFi and the fact that we didn’t have international cell coverage. To our surprise … and luck … a truck pulled up and the man spoke broken English but when we said Tom and Jana he knew exactly what we needed. He was so helpful with directions and even called Tom to let him know we were nearby. Right then and there we knew we were in good hands! We were greeted by Tom who gave us a walkthrough of the Casita. The porch and lush tropical gardens is beautiful! Inside is small as described but breathtaking with all the raw, natural wood, huge shower, small kitchen but everything you’d ever need in the tropics. Including bottled water, beach bikes with locks, Bluetooth speaker…and local cell phone. Tom and Jana provided privacy with convenience … just text if you need something or you can take the phone with you out in town to call a taxi or communicate with locals … genius! Puerto Viejo is a great town…vibrant and full of life and character. The general tourist issue is with the people who think they can bring a spoiled attitude, American or otherwise, to a dominantly laid back, cultural and artistic community. With everything at our disposal we explored Puerto Viejo with ease! Shops, restaurants, street food, grocery stores, The Pointe (hello Popeye & Tiffany), beaches and up and down the coast … everything was so close by! A perfect location for feeling like a local … nothing like escaping reality! ;) Casa Alegre and Puerto Viejo is better than a zoo … Sloths, frogs, a huge array of birds and iguanas larger than I’ve ever seen….and we didn’t even go on an excursion. Tom and Jana … you’re an amazing couple who we admire for living the dream! Thank you for being such great hosts and people! We enjoyed our time with you and hope to live the dream just as you have! Pura Vida!

Casita Alegre is located in a lush rain forest setting. Wildlife is abundant and bird watching is among the most outstanding in the world.
