The whole area is a designated nature reserve and is perfect for anyone who enjoys the great outdoors. About Linda and John MacHugh

John and I are 52 and 47 respectively, but still have an adventurous spirit. We like nothing better than travelling and exploring new places. I first visited the Black Forest with my German pen pal when I was 15. It was so memorable that when my husband and I were looking for a holiday home, I was immediately drawn there, almost 30 years later. We tend not to go for package holidays and avoid typical sun sea and sand deals, so this area is perfect for us. We can be as active or as lazy as we want to be, and range of activities and the changing seasons mean we never get bored. We have brought both my parents and friends out to visit, and everyone, young or old, has loved the apartment and the surrounding area.

Linda and John MacHugh purchased this apartment in 2006

Why Linda and John MacHugh chose Menzenschwand

We purchased the property in 2006 at the time that Germany so successfully hosted the World Cup. As soon as we went through the front door, we felt at home. It was fresh and clean and had everything we needed for a great holiday, but it was the view from the large balcony that sealed the deal. We've spent many happy times outside eating, drinking or just looking at the view. The area changes dramatically with the seasons, hot in summer, deep snow in winter and red and gold foliage in the autumn. Despite being situated in a rural idyll, it's also ideally placed for exploring the corner of Europe where Germany, Switzerland and France meet. Freiburg, Strasbourg, Stuttgart and beautiful Lake Constance are all in easy access.

What makes this apartment unique

Menzenschwand is a rural village that caters well for tourists. There is a good range of restaurants, inns and hotels for eating out, a bakery, post office, ski shop, drink shop and bank. The nearest town, St Blasien, is dominated by a magnificent cathedral and has several large supermarkets. There are many seasonal events in the area including wonderful Christmas markets in Freiburg, Stuttgart and Strasbourg and the wood carving festival and classical concerts in St Blasien. Anyone who doesn't believe Germans can enjoy themselves needs to experience Fasching in the weeks leading up to Ash Wednesday when each village goes mad dressing up and playing music. The area is a nature reserve, renowned for its clean air and unspoilt landscapes. Menzenschwand's Radon spa is also a major attraction.

Guestbook comments from the owner

McManus Family: This was our first time in that part of Germany and we were completely captured by the breathtaking scenery. We had a magnificent view from the balcony and the apartment was very comfortable, well equipped and spotlessly clean. It was very relaxing to sit on the balcony and just listen to the contented sounds of the cows and goats next door, take in the pure clean air and look at the breathtaking scenery. We will definitely be booking again in the future."

Wall Family: 'The accommodation is delightful, balancing the modern and the traditional. It is a well equipped and comfortable apartment with fairytale views of a snow covered landscape. With roads snow ploughed and always open, skiing at Feldberg, reasonable prices and a warm welcome from everyone, we had a brilliant winter holiday. Highly recommended

Lindsey Davies:The apartment was very well presented, well stocked and very tidy. We had a very relaxing holiday and are already talking about a return visit

Beautiful, comfortable, clean, well equipped property in beautiful location!

  • 5 of 5

We were very pleased with the overall ease and friendly, prompt communication with owners, Linda and John. Our late evening arrival was effortless, and we were delighted with the amenities of the property. The apartment is well furnished, the kitchen has everything you could possibly ask for- and the highlight for us was the beautiful balcony overlooking the hills and fields of the village. We enjoyed our breakfasts and late afternoon rests gazing at the gorgeous view.

Linda and John provided a very informative information package, lots of local brochures and nice selection of books and DVD's.

The apartment was immaculately clean and spacious.

Menzenschwand is a charming village and ideal vacation spot for those who enjoy walking, hiking , biking and other outdoor activities.

Apartment is at beginning of village and has market shop , bakery , restaurants and pool/ sauna all within walking distance.

Highly recommend this wonderful property. We will return!

Very nice apartment and a lovely valley.

Were there in winter and had a great hike up to a hut. As well as joining for the local Fasching festivities.

And if you go make sure to visit the thermal baths just around the corner. The Radon Revital Bad.

Fantastic location for exploring the Black Mountains, hiking or just relaxing.

  • 5 of 5

Apartment was just what we needed as a base to explore the Black Mountains. Had two great walks without having to go anywhere - the waterfall and further up the mountain to Feldberg. Also swam in the lake only a short drive away. Had a fabulous meal in the Rosthaus in the village (can't remember the name) but its the one you have to book as very popular. Village was very quiet and very friendly. Also took the train to Freiberg which was a great contrast - very big bustling city. Beautiful too. Great swimming pool.

Perfect for an Autumn walking holiday

  • 5 of 5

The apartment was as described, comfortable, warm, very well equipped and clean with a lovely comfortable double bed. It is at the southern end of the village giving easy access to a huge variety of well marked walks. We walked to St Blasien, a beautiful town with an amazing church, I managed to get a ticket for a superb piano concert, look out for their programme, a real treat. Also a good selection of cafes and restaurants, good for food shopping too with a Lidl and Edcart. There is also a vet (Tierpractice), in the town.

Monday and Tuesday can be tricky to find a good lunch spot, many places close, there is a lovely backery in Todmoos with delicious cakes.

The owners have been very helpful, I would definately recommend to friends and we will hope to return.

Owner's Response: We're so pleased that these guests enjoyed their stay and also managed to get to one of the concerts in the cathedral in St Blasien. The cathedral's impressive dome makes the acoustics incredible.

Car: recommended

Believe it or not, there are beach options available, even though the sea is hundreds of miles away. The nearby lakes of Schluchsee and Titisee both have small beaches along their shores, ideal for summer sunbathing and swimming.

There are a number of airports within 1.5 hours drive of Menzenschwand: Zuerich Airport 47 miles. Basel Airport 45 miles. Karlsruhe-Baden Airport 102 miles. Stuttgart 109 miles. Car hire is recommended, though there is a local bus service, linking to the German rail system. Nearest train station is Schluchsee, 5 miles away. Included in the rental price is a Schwarzwaldkarte, offering free public transport in the Black Forest area.

St Blasien 5 miles. Schluchsee 5 miles. Titisee 13 miles. Freiburg 33 miles. Rheinfall, Zurich and Basel 45 miles. Colmar (France) 65 miles. Konstanz 73 miles. Baden Baden 102 miles. Stuttgart 109 miles.

Further Details:

Menzenschwand has a bakery, a small grocery shop, a drinks shop, a ski shop, a post office, tourist information office and a bank. The Radon Revitalbad in the village is a spa with indoor and outdoor heated pools, saunas, massages and radon treatment available. The waterfall at the end of the valley is beautiful and is floodlit at night in the summer. There are more extensive shopping opportunities in St Blasien which has several large supermarkets, butchers, bakers, greengrocers, clothing and gift shops. The large cathedral dominates the skyline and is well worth a visit. Regular concerts are held inside as the acoustics are magnificent.

The surrounding countryside consists of mountains and valleys, each valley having its own town or village, and all of them picture perfect. These include Todtmoos, Todtnau, Bernau and Lenzkirch. The valleys and villages are linked by miles of hiking trails, and Nordic walking is very popular. There are 2 lakes nearby - Schluchsee, ideal for sailing and Titisee which offers lake cruises, pedalos etc. At 2km in length, the Rodelbahn in Todtnau is Germany's longest mountain coaster, so if you fancy hurtling down a mountainside at speed in a small chair, this is the place for you! The Steinwasen Park near Kirchzarten is a mix of rides, roller coasters and wildlife. Further afield, the city of Freiburg has stunning architecture, extensive shops and restaurants and a great market which is permanently found around the cathedral square. Hofsgrund is one of the highest points in the Black Forest and commands panoramic views of the Alps to the South and the Vosges to the East. Lake Constance is also well worth a visit, with the towns of Konstanz and Meersburg offering medieval architecture and beautiful lake views. Further along the lake is Friedrichshafen, home of the Zeppelin. You can book Zeppelin rides over the lake and surrounding area.

Basel, Strasbourg, Colmar, Baden Baden and Stuttgart all offer interesting day-trip options.
