Country House in La Fontenelle, Ile et Vilaine, Brittany, France - Plenty to Visit at all Times of Year, near coast, golf, fishing, music lessons available
- English, French
I'm a music teacher and performer from Gloucestershire who has long had a love affair with France! The renovations on my longere are now almost finished throughout. My four children and I have enjoyed and continue to enjoy it over the years, and now my grandchildren love it too! Come and enjoy it as much as we do! There is a separate gite at the far end of the property, so an ideal opportunity to rent both units for a large party, or to bring grandparents with you but still have some privacy if needed.
Daphne purchased this House in 1999
Why Daphne chose La Fontenelle
Its a superb rural location, so tranquil and good for walking and cycling, but at the same time easy to access shops and essential services. The area is at the centre of a highly attractive sight seeing district with many famous tourist attractions within easy reach. Ease of access from the UK by ferry and plane.

Beautiful gite on the borders of Brittany
This is a beautiful gite set in stunning countryside but within easy reach of both the coast and world famous sites like Mont St Michel. The house is incredibly spacious with a two large living areas and a well equipped kitchen. The bedrooms are comfortable and there is a constant supply of hot water for the bath and shower. Best of all is the garden which has a large patio and a grassed area that looks out over fields. The local village is less than a mile away although facilities there are limited. However Antrain is only a couple of miles down the road with both local shops and an excellent supermarket. We enjoyed a week here in August and would recommend it to anybody who would like to get to know this part of France.
Thank you for your kind words. I am so pleased you enjoyed the spacious house and its fine location for sight seeing. I hope to welcome you to Les Chenes again.
Beautiful, peaceful stay
We had a wonderful time. The Gite is comfortable and has an excellent garden: large and great for eating outside. Also loads of space for games. Good facilities close by including forest and lake. Easy access to Ferry ports, and the wonderful St Mont Michel.
Thank you for your kind comments. We hope to see you at Les Chenes again.
Peace and tranquility in the heart of Normandy
Firstly, my family and I were quite awestruck by the amount of space in this gite. No "bijou cottage" this, it's on quite a grand scale with a massive communal sitting room overlooked by a “mistrels’ gallery” (in the regional style of the long farmhouse, or La Longère, apparently). It feels as if it's in the middle of nowhere. Well okay, it IS in the middle of nowhere, but a pleasant 15 minute walk takes you to the nearest village of La Fontanelle, a pretty, sleepy little place, with a shop or two and a very nice bar/restaurant where we had an inexpensive yet wholesome lunch on our first day. If you want “sights”, you have to get in the car, but there’s a big choice within easy reach, not least the world heritage site of Le Mont St Michel (you can beat the crowds from such a nearby base). Less well known but almost as impressive is Fougères with its massive fortifications. We enjoyed the local towns of Pont Orson and Combourg, both of which have lively markets. We spent our final day at Dinan, a vibrant fishing port that oozes charm. Highly recommended.
Sehr schönes Haus!
Schönes großes Haus mit viel Platz und Garten.
Aber ohne Auto nicht machbar, da zu weit weg von den Versorgungsmöglichkeiten. Dann aber z.B. Mont St. Michel recht nahe gelegen.
I am glad you enjoyed the spacious accommodation and garden, and were able to do some good sight seeing! You were valued, considerate guests and would be welcome back anytime thank you.
Nett renoviertes altes Bauernhaus
Thank you for your kind comments; I'm glad you enjoyed your stay and found it good value. I'm not sure what you mean by the room was 'noisy'; we are in a very quiet location and all the internal walls are constructed to normal standards of double thickness and insulation! The minor electrical problem you had has been diagnosed and rectified. You were lovely guests and are welcome to stay any time.

The nearest tourist beaches are at St Malo and Dinard, about 30 mins drive. Mont St Michel is about 20 mins away and other coastal resorts a similar distance, including Cancale, famous for its oysters. Cherrueix in the bay of Mont st Michel is superb for walks and shell collecting! St Malo and Dinard both have excellent sandy beaches, swimming and good facilities. There is also a lakeside beach and leisure area at 'L'etang de boulet' about 20 minutes away.
Flights are available to Dinard and Rennes. The drive from the ferry port at St Malo is about 30 mins, Caen is about 1hr 30 mins away, Cherbourg just a little further, Le Havre about 2hrs 15mins. Use of a car is recommended to get the best from the area and can be hired if necessary from the airport or more locally.
About a kilometre from both La Fontenelle and Antrain, 10 kilometres from the larger town of St Brice en Cogles. Half an hours drive to Fougeres with the largest medieval castle in Europe and to Dol be Bretagne with its huge granite cathedral. Approximately an hour from Dinan on the river Rance, and Rennes. Chateau be Bonnefontaine a kilometre away, as is the leisure park 'Foret de Villecartier', with walks, lake, boats, pony rides, tree top assault course and restaurant/bar.
There is a bar/restaurant in La Fontenelle. In Antrain there is a Carrefour supermarket, post office, two boulangeries, two pharmacies, several banks with cash dispensers, a tabac/newsagent and other small shops. There are bars and restaurants and a wider selection of restaurants can be found in nearby towns.
There are plenty of leisure activities in the area. In Fougeres there is a wonderful new large swimming pool with chutes. Fishing, horse riding and canoeing are also available locally.
Emmaus in Fougeres is a treasure hunt for those who enjoy boot sales and bargains!
