Spacious traditional house on the Dordogne
As soon as we settled around the kitchen table with baguettes, cheeses, meats and wine it felt like home. This house had rustic charm and exuded French character. Jenny and Peter keep the house well stocked with everything you might need ( a welcome pack including wine and milk was provided) and are always on hand for any help required. There is plenty to do in the local area and house (especially given the lovely heated pool) and it is well placed to explore the Dordogne. The bedrooms and bathrooms were much larger than the photos suggested. All bedrooms had exceptional views. The house is located in a quiet lane and there is no traffic noise, resulting in very peaceful and deep sleeps! We had a wonderful time in this house and would love to return. Thank you Jenny and Peter.
Bucolic delight. Feels peaceful/secluded year close to larger towns.
Knowledgeable & unobtrusive support from passionate owners in the next house. The pool is undersold on website - it is large & well furnished. The cottage is as well furnished & supplied as we have known. Two fridges ! Two bathrooms ! Two living areas ! Fronting onto the Dordogne, it is beautifully situated. In France, bins are important. We never worried once about them as the owners sort on an almost daily basis. The bikes were a bonus. Highly recommended - thank you Jenny & Peter
So glad you enjoyed your holiday - you were great guests and thank you for leaving the cottage clean and tidy.
Idyllic peaceful setting on the Dordogne river
Cottage location was both quiet and charming.
The accommodation was good especially the swimming pool and the kitchen exceptionally well equipped.
Jennifer and Peter were friendly and informative.
Beautiful house in a very relaxing setting
We loved the house. Everyone had a really relaxing time there and it was fantastically well equipped with sharp knives, chopping boards, blender, microwave and toaster to name but a few of the useful items. Jenny and Peter were extremely accommodating hosts, available for information but never intruding in the holiday.
It's a really quiet spot, with an 'on the doorstep' view of the river to calm the mind. As a family of 5, we definitely needed a car, which gave us easy access to supermarkets, restaurants, kayak hire etc within a small radius of the house. Lovely walks at the end of the day along the riverside and through the nearby orchards.
Thanks for having us.
Many thanks for your kind words - we are really pleased you enjoyed your week at Les Sommieres. You and your family were certainly delightful (and tidy) guests!
Wonderful location in a beautiful area.
We have just returned from two weeks at Riverside Cottage and it is just that - right beside the river. The views are just amazing with swans swimming right in front of you. Sitting out in the evening watching the sun set with the view over the river was wonderful. Jenny and Peter made us feel very welcome.
The house has everything you need away from home with a lovely french feel with the shutters and decoration. The bathrooms are clean, modern and fully equipped. The washing machine came in useful too. We used the bbq on many occasions and the garden is big enough to play a good game of badminton!
The swimming pool is wonderful - it is warm and the loungers, with cushions and parasols, made all the difference. We have had great fun!
The area is very quiet if you want to be away from it all. However it is only a short drive to the local villages or town for shopping and sightseeing, the markets are good too. Bergerac is a lovely town and well worth a visit.
We would highly recommend this property to anyone visiting the Dordogne. We didn't want to come home!
Great cottage, lovely area :)
My friends and I stayed at Jenny's place for a wedding and it was perfect. Jenny was kind enough to stock the fridge with essentials and her husband offered to drive us back to the wedding venue the following day to retrieve our car (so we didn't have to drive home after the wedding)! Lovely area, lovely stay. I would highly recommend!
Canoe and bike hire is possible in Pessac sur Dordogne - less than 1 km from the cottage. The river is one of the cleanest in France
There is a large leisure lake about 20km north with tennis, canoes, restaurants and a sandy beach for swimming.
It's just over two hours drive to the Atlantic coast for surfing etc.
The river is one of the cleanest in France but only suitable for strong swimmers who like to "swim on the spot"!
The closest channel port is St. Malo - 350 miles away. Calais is about 600 miles. Possible discount available on Brittany Ferries.
Bergerac is the closest airport - just over 30 mins away. Many low cost airlines fly in here from many UK airports.
Bordeaux (Merignac) airport is 1 hr+ away.
The TGV trains come from London (via Lille or Paris) into Libourne (30 mins) or Bordeaux.
Pessac has a good butcher/small supermarket and a "general store" with petrol pumps. There is an excellent restaurant 1/2 km away and a small bar/ restaurant on the quayside in the summer run by the canoe hire people. Pizza van in the square one night a week.
Ste.Foy la Grande (15 km) has large supermarkets as well as a good selection of "normal" shops, several good restaurants and a really great market on Saturdays. Night market with food and entertainment on Thursdays in July and August.
There are lots of activities in the summer - street markets & fairs - firework displays - concerts & a 'son et lumière' - the amazing reenactment of the last battle of the 100 Years War at Castillon la Bataille. Wine tasting, chateaux, pre-historic caves, medieval villages...... the Dordogne is a wonderful area for a memorable holiday and Les Sommieres is a magical spot.
