About jane shepherd
I am a Hospital doctor working in London and living in Oxford. I have 2 teenage children and have spent many holidays in Corsica since 1981. The house was built for me to provide comfortable spacious accomodation for my family and friends. I believe holidays are important 'recharge' time and so everything needs to be organised. My ideal holiday is family based with everyone having enough space to relax in their way. I bought my first house in Porticcio as I was unable to find high quality accomodation to rent. I love cooking and eating! A well planned kitchen and stocked kitchen is essential. The local food is so fresh and tasty that we usually eat in enjoying the view over the bay till late. I also enjoy reading, old films and TV and jigsaw puzzles. So you will find books, DVDs and games.

Why jane shepherd chose Porticcio
I have visited all the island and chose Porticcio as it is on the outstandingly beautiful bay of Ajaccio and near the airport, which makes the journey so easy. There is a regular 3 times daily ferry service to Ajaccio town. Porticcio is a lively summer resort but also has a local community which prevents it being just about tourism. Outside high summer the restaurants serve the locals and the school children learn to sail on the bay. There are no high rise buildings or big hotels and no parking meters! There are many beautiful beaches within an easy drive. Walking and cycling are also popular. The house overlooks the bay and the twinkling lights at night-simply magical. All facilities are within a short stroll. The villa is your home from home. Check in and check out are flexible depending on your travel arrangements. A welcome food package is provided so when you arrive you can have coffee, tea, breakfast or lunch with wine as you wish. The area has been enjoyed by all age groups. The parents with small children enjoy the soft sand beaches, quite afternoon siestas for the little ones and long lazy suppers after bedtime, teens can stroll to the beach and enjoy the large array of water sports, and grown ups of all ages can do their own thing with great food, wine and scenery.
What makes this Villa unique
The villa is new and has a large garden with a beautiful heated outdoor pool. The pool in the summer is usually 28ºC at a minimum. It has been well designed and built to modern standards with double glazing and shutters to keep cool in summer and warm in winter. The living and bedroom areas have both air conditioning and ceiling fans. Everything is within an easy walk which is great as no-one has to be the driver after a long beach side evening meal. Please note that I do not agree rentals until we have has direct communication, so expect a phone call.

Perfect for an extended family
Three generations able to enjoy time together and separately in homely surroundings. Plenty of things to do for all ages combined with relaxation and the ideal environment for water babies like our grandchildren. Wonderful support and communication from the owner and the local manager, prompt but never intrusive.
Nous avons été impressionnés par la beauté, la propreté et les commodités offerts avec cette villa. Si nous retournons un jour sur l'île de beauté, ce sera assurément avec cette location!
Spacious, well equipped and high quality villa
This was a lovely property maintained and equipped to a very high standard and in an excellent location, with beach, restaurants, bars and shops within very close proximity. The views from the outdoor dining area are absolutely stunning. We were 3 generations - grand parents, parents and 3 children (aged 7, 10 and 13) and everyone had a wonderful time. Majority of the holiday was spent relaxing and swimming in the lovely pool or in the sea although we did have a few excursions including a great day out in the woods doing "parcours" (tree rope climbing). As a keen cyclist I took my own bike and spent most mornings cycling for a couple of hours. As I found out Corsica is very mountainous - as soon as you turn inland the road goes upwards! Hence a good idea to get out early before it gets too hot (which it did very quickly).
The local town Porticcio was lively and could get quite busy at times but never to the levels of the French riviera in August for example.
The owner, Jane was extremely helpful and attentive both before and during the holiday especially when we had a small issue with the swimming pool - this was fixed very quickly.
Overall I can highly recommend this villa if you are looking for a high quality, spacious place close to many amenities.
wonderful property, better than website
The property is on a private estate, requiring a code to open doors to estate and thus feels it is secure. Most of the villas have been completed, including the ones on either side of our villa. Shrubs have been grown to ensure privacy from the other properties.
The view from the back of the villa is amazing, looking over the bay of Ajaccio.
The garden is divided into several layers. The swimming pool is at the bottom with sunloungers and a gazebo and barbecue.
Thje upper layer has a patio leading from the villa with a gazebo outside one bedroom so people can be by the pool and others at the top.
The villa is designed for 8 people with a table on the upper terrace to ensure there is enough seating for lunch and dinner with outstanding views. There is adequate shading over the table..
Inside the villa has air conditioning, which was not used because the high ceilings which kept the property cool.
There are 4 bedrooms 3 are on suite. The beds were comfortable and we all had a good nights sleep.
The kitchen shows that the owner is keen on cooking, with many cook books, It was a delight not to have the need to buy essentials such as salt and garlic and even herbs. There are many pots and pans, plates and plenty of cutlery available- like being in someones home.
One one evening there was some rain and we watched a DVD in a large room which was a lounge and dining room with enough sofas for 8 people.. Needless to say there was also free internet connection.
The owner arranged for Brigitte to greet us with a welcome pack so we did not have to go to the supermarket before lunch. She was brilliant and came again to ensure all was well. She ensured the villa was well cleaned.
The pool was heated and the only point to make was that it was 28C. This enabled us to swim and play in the pool in the evening. There was an electric cover resulting in an insect free pool the next day
We also had the use of cycles and a table tennis table for the kids which we used on the patio.
Can I go on the superlatives. We hope to come back next year, although see there have been some early bookings
Wish we had the time to stay longer
Our third annual visit and it gets more comfortable and relaxing each time. Even our 6 year old granddaughter was trying to persuade us that she needed another week here. It is a home rather than an impersonal holiday let which helps you to settle; we even had a discussion over a lunch about what day it actually was! If annual leave allowances were greater and the adults' schedules could be co-ordinated, it would be hard to resist a longer break. Thank you Jane & Brigitte for your usual standard of hospitality and care.
Classy, well-stocked villa in beautiful location
The contact with owner Jane & advice about travel before we even got there was invaluable. Getting there was painfree as Adjaccio airport is 15 mins away - we were met by Brigette (housekeeper for Jane). Her advice & recommendations throughout our stay were also really helpful especially when hiring a car.
The town had everything in terms of food, iea lovely fruit & veg shop and places to buy fresh bread, meat and fish as well as the large supermarket (Carrefour). We tried two local restaurants which were good and also went for lunch down the road at Le (very nice indeed).
The villa itself has substantial sea and mountain views. It is close to the town - within a few minutes walk. It is in a secure gated area with a code. There is no shortage of places to sit inside and out and plenty of room to spreadout. The top iron table is lovely for meals in the evening.
Near the pool is a shaded seated area where we spent most of our time. The pool area is superb and has lovely tiling - it is heated to >30 degrees with a jacuzzi end and there were pool toys and inflatables although we took our own. There is very little maintenance besides shutting the pool cover at night which is a safety/legal requirement.
The kitchen is well stocked with plenty of plates and cooking dishes, pans etc. The welcome pack of tea milk eggs etc was very useful. The main living room is vast and has plenty of space to sit and a tv area with lots of DVDs for every taste. There is also a bookshelf with an interesting selection of novels and books on Corsica and plenty of local maps too.
Each bedroom is tasefully decorated and most have en suites. The master bedroom has a large wetroom with bath and shower. Towels are good quality, the showers are superb. Hot water is always available.
In the garage are some bikes which are available for use but we didn't get chance. We didn't need to use the washer either but it is in there.
Corsica is a lovely place to visit with hot temperatures on the coast and snow on the mountains. We enjoyed temperatures of mid to high 20s at the end of May, early June. (NB most people only speak French).
We wanted to get up in the mountains and see more of the coast north (Iles de Sanguines) & south so we hired a car which worked out well. It is well worth going up into the hills & we went to the Cascades des Anglais on the GR20. We also called into the Tortoise Sanctuary on the way back and we had our own tortoise that wandered into the garden.
Thank you for your comprehensive reveiw. I am so pleased that you enjoyed your stay. My aim is to provide my guests with a home from home for their holiday and hope to welcome you back in the future.
Porticcio is a small beach-side resort with a beautiful 1km long sandy beach with watersports and boat hire and an easy 5 -7 minutes stroll from the house. There are regular ferries to Ajaccio and is the departure point for many other boat excursions. There are a wide range of shops and a large supermarket, as well as plenty of bars and restaurants many of which are directly on the beach. The bay is spectacular with numerous other beaches and coves within 15 minutes drive.
The nearest airport is Ajaccio Napoleon Bonaparte which is approximately 15 minutes drive. Flights are direct during the summer with Easyjet or via Nice, Marseille, Geneva or Paris. Taxis cost approximately 30 euros from the airport. As all amenities are within a short walk a car is not essential, but recommended for those wishing to explore the island. There is a regular ferry service to Ajaccio, as well as other boat trips.

Porticcio is a small, usually quiet beach side resort. It can be busy and lively from mid-July to the end of August with beach music and other entertainments. There is a cinema and night club. It is a good centre for visiting the island by car. It appeals to many different types of people, walkers, painters, beach lovers and those who want a simple relaxed holiday.
The shops sell a wide range of local produce and wines. The food is Mediterranean with a strong Italian influence - plenty of pasta and homemade pizza. Traditional Corsican cooking is unique and well worth a try. There is a daily market in Ajaccio selling fruit, vegetables, olive oils, hams and charcuterie and cheeses. Nearby is the Fish market.
For children the beaches are wonderful with sparkling water. Older children may like the outdoor waterslides or the inflatables at the Airport beach which are like a floating playground. Tennis and Riding are nearby.
The house has bikes, table tennis and body surf boards which you are welcome to use.
There are at least 10 beaches within an easy drive, all are different, but for very young children the Plage d'Argent offers fine silvef sand and a very gently shelving beach. Ideal for young toddlers, for sand castle building and playing with inflatables in the sea.
For those who enjoy walking, there are numerous hilking trails nearby, including the Mare a Mare, and Mare a Monte.
Many varied restaurants are an easy 5 -10 minute walk from the villa. Its a pleasure to go for an evening stroll.
