Villa in Castiglione di Garfagnana, Tuscany - Peaceful Location with Stunning Views of Garfagnana
- English, French, Spanish, Italian
About Colm Breathnach
Colm, family, friends and volunteers have restored these houses themselves over many years, and are now focused on creating an eco-camp site in the forests below the villas (well hidden and distant from Prunecchio) - do take time to come and visit us - we are five minutes down the road on the walking route to Castiglione. The picture shows Colm and Dasha, a volunteer from Russia, upon completion of art-work in the barn nearby.
Colm Breathnach purchased this Villa in 2002
Why Colm Breathnach chose Castiglione di Garfagnana
Prunecchio is a hamlet back in time where the land is still tended with old world tools and instruments. This place has to be seen and felt to be believed. The view and sunny aspect are magnificent but it is only after a while you tune into the various sounds and sights the immediate vicinity has to offer: crickets, wild boar, deer, cuckoos, owls, woodpeckers, spades, axes, scythes etc. Cars cannot come down to the hamlet which makes it stand apart in its old worldliness
What makes this Villa unique
Prunecchio is set back in time and has the feel of being isolated and private, whilst at the same time being part of an ancient hamlet and wonderful elderly neighbours who always have time to chat and advise on old techniques of cultivation, building, folklore etc. You can also walk to both Chiozza and stunning Castilgione di Garfagnana, winner of the Borghi piu belli della Toscana award (most beautiful small town in Tuscany).

A beautiful, peaceful hideaway
We've just completed a week at Villa Prunecchio, and were extremely sad to leave. What a wonderful, wonderful place! The house is beautiful, comfortable and clean, the countryside superb and Colm is an absolutely wonderful host. If you are looking for a special place to recharge the spiritual batteries, go for country walks or sit on a balcony eating large amounts of cheese, I can't recommend it highly enough.......
Amazing hidden gem!
We arrived late ind the evening and therefore wasn't able to see much of the outside, but when we woke up in the morning we were all very excited. The view from the house over the valley was stunning and the patio in the front of the house was the perfect setting for our mornings afternoons and evening. There's nothing better than to start you day with a dip in a pool in such lovely surroundings. Due to the great weather we didn't spend much time inside, but even though we had been forced indoor the house offers a very cosy living room and dining room. The house have been restored in a way which feels very authentic and we didn't feel any urges to go on many trips, since we felt like we have everything we need there.
Groceries had to be done in a nearby village which is not in a walking distance, but that's to be expected when you want a view like that.
We would definitely recommend the place to others both families and groups of friends.
Fantastic setting, spacious property
A comfortable family home with plenty of space inside and outside. Lovely pool and great barbecue area. Trampoline and table tennis welcome extras. Pizzeria in the nearby village serves very good food but check opening hours as only open weekend evenings in June. Property managers friendly and helpful. Amazing thunderstorms while we were there but plenty of sunshine too. We were a party of 5 adults and we all had a great time. Be warned of steep steps leading from the car parking area to the property and the directions given are not very detailed but we found it in the end! The kitchen is well equipped but could do with a little updating in places. Everything else was great.

There is a pizzeria in Chiozza (1.2 km) which attracts food-lovers from far and wide who enjoy the summer breezes, extensive views and excellent value. There is also a local shop with most basic supplies, a mobile shop which calls to Prunecchio on Tuesdays at 11:30. The restaurans of Il Pozzo, Lo Sfizio and Il Castello are a short drive away, and Risorante Il Belvedere a tantalising 1.5-hour walk away (30-minute drive) in Sillico, across the valley and visibile from Prunecchio.

The hamlet of San Pellegrino (1,500 metres above sea-level) is only a ten-minute drive away with a wonderful ethnographical museum, great restaurants and wonderful walks of varying duration along the Appenine ridges.

This side-road ends after 100 metres, where you may park your car. Go down the flight of steps and at the new paving turn left. Villa Prunecchio has two doors close to eachother, wisteria growing over the exposed stone and a trampoline at the front of the house.
Our English-speaking care-taker Alessandro lives nearby. He will have left the door unlocked and the keys on the dining room table. His phone number is 0039 3486618942 and he will call to see you on the evening of your arrival or the morning afterwards.
Please help yourselves to herbs and vegetables in the gated garden beside the house.
The password for the 2GEXT and 5GEXT is prunecchio.
Please fold down the green umbrella by the pool each evening or on windy days otherwise it will break.
There are several fantastic walks starting right from the front door, with Castiglione being the simplest and most spectacular. It takes just under an hour to walk down, a bit longer to walk back up (400 metre ascent). Ask the caretakers for directions to the start of this walk. Remember when hiking around Garfagnana in the summer to always wear hiking boots and stay on paths.
