A rare chance to stay in a beautiful fourteenth-century home set among winding alleyways in the heart of the Venetian castle area of Naxos. Come and be bewitched by the special magic of the Castro and this wonderful island.
You will be peaceful and secluded in this protected historic area, while being right in the heart of the town, a few minutes walk up from the waterfront. Sitting above this lively port, Castro Sea View House has views of the sea and mountains, a sun-trap terrace, and cool sea breezes through its high-ceilinged rooms.
The house is a perfect retreat with a calm atmosphere, plenty of books, antique furniture, paintings and textiles, and a classic vinyl LP library for you to enjoy.
There are two large airy reception rooms, a large kitchen and three comfortable bedrooms (two doubles and a twin), one with sea view and one with garden view.
A whitewashed terrace overflowing with geraniums and bougainvillea provides a wonderful place to sit for breakfast, reading a novel or secluded sunbathing.
You can choose your favourite place to eat in the house, whether on the terrace, at the large dining table downstairs, or the upstairs dining area looking out to the sea and the mountains.
We have lovingly maintained this historic property using traditional methods since our family bought it back in 1963 from descendants of one of the original Venetian families who came to Naxos in the 13th century. All profits are returned into the ongoing restoration and maintenance of this special place.
The house has walking access only, up stepped alleyways. You can park within 5 mins walk of the house, down a flight of steps at the back of the Castro (space allowing). A few hundred yards down through the North Arch of the castle brings you to the old market place where you can buy bread cooked in a wood-burning oven, fresh peaches, local vegetables, wine etc . The local produce is delicious and wonderful for cooking up feasts at the house.
You can walk down to the ruined temple in the harbour for an early morning or evening swim (five minutes walk). Good snorkelling along the right side, where you can still see the ancient walls of the town from an earthquake. Or walk along the harbour to St George's beach which has a wide sandy beach lined with tavernas to relax, eat and read (10 mins).
You will fall under the spell of Naxos, as all visitors do - enjoy!
Please note: we book by the week only, with changeover on Saturdays.
