This unique property has been restored to former glory as an Old (wealthy) Merchant's House- when Olhao was the major centre of fishing in Portugal. It boasts two outdoor terraces (one with lovely garden feature and one with open air jacuzzi) from which you can enjoy fabulous views to the nearby sandbank islands and the still bustling fishing port, as well as amazing vistas over the old town and it's traditional cube houses. There's even two pairs of storks nesting on nearby chimneys you can watch feeding their young. Whilst maintaining great character and elegance, this property has the modern conveniences of a new kitchen, two bathrooms, central heating and solar powered hot water as well as satellite TV,internet connection, stereo and iPod base. Why ron zahl chose Olhao region

One of the best locations in Olhao old town with wonderful 360 degree views . When we saw this historic townhouse. which was once a wealthy merchant's home and later a music school, we were entranced.

Then began the attempt to restore it's former glory. Most of the work was carried out by hand and the delicate task began. We are proud to be part of the process of keeping one of the nicest homes in the old town alive and well. Sadly, some have been destroyed and replaced by new builds or modern apartments. However, there has been recent recognition that the historic old town and port of Olhao are highly desirable and worth restoring and preserving.

We hope our guests will find their stay memorable. Many do return for further helpings - welcome back!

What makes this house unique

Apart from the unique character of the old town with its cubist houses and almost Moroccan feel (especially from our rooftop), there are some wonderful sandband islands and inlets nearby. We found a heavenly spot where a taxi boat (for 1and a half euros) takes you to an uncrowded islet where the sea laps gently across your toes and the clear waters are so refreshing (it could be the Maldives). Paradise!

We can give guests hints for the best beaches and places to visit and eateries.

Notes on accommodation: Solar power provides year round hot water and winter heating. Jacuzzi on top terrace -for a brilliant, relaxed, refreshing experience and great views. Because of stairs and access we do not recommend suitability for younger children. Internet zon hot spot. The merchant's house is wonderfully situated on the corner of a pedestrianised street. There is free parking nearby. However, there is no need for a car as great transport links are within a few minutes walk. Outside: First terrace has pretty paved and decked area with outdoor dining. Also has a small and sweet (cistus) garden and lovely views to the islands and over the city scape. Top terrace has 2/3 person bubbling jacuzzi - sun loungers and even better views to the sea, fishing port and proud parent storks nesting on nearby chimney. Utility Room: Private Terrace area has wine cooler, washing machine, outdoor sink, clothes drying area. Iron & board. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels, linen provided per booking (weekly). Beach towels provided. Other: Hallway with traditional tiled floor and antique cabinet. Sun room on terrace floor - with I-pod dock, books, cushions and Laura Ashley day beds.

A beautiful House to stay

My husband and I stayed in this beautiful house for 10 days in January. The 1st day we had lunch in a restaurant just behind the house which was very good ( only one menu grilled mix fish with few local side dish and it was yummy and not pricey at all. then we find the Binco local restaurant few minutes away the house with best tapas and very reasonable too. we went back 3 times! all listed in trip adviser. have to say location of this house is perfect, with a super market close by and the port so close with all the good restaurant , daily market for your fresh fish and vegetable, lots of good shops in lanes near to us, loads of cafe are on the mean road facing the port. we really couldn't ask for more, as we hired a car to explore other towns while we were in area, we never had a problem with parking , free on the road near super market. :-)

Jacuzzi on the top terrace defiantly was a cream on top of the beautiful cake. Mario the guy with key was helpful , We definitely recommend the place for people who like a bit of peace and quiet.

there are lots of stairs in the house , for us it wasn't problem, but if is not for everyone. otherwise it was a perfect stay . we loved it.

So Close

We did not know what to expect but what we got was a lot better than we thought, the apartment was great, the local supermarket was a minute away the fish and meat market was 5 minutes away with so much different type of fish to choice from, the Saturday market on the front was interesting and cheap the train station was 15 minutes away and again was cheap for where you could go to, we are already looking at going back again

Close to Ria Formosa Nature Park. Great fresh food restaurants and local wines.


Beautiful unspoilt beaches close by - access from Olhao by short passenger ferry ride to 3 different unspoilt sandbank islands. Other beaches are 10 minutes drive away.

Olhao fishing port and boating marina is 3 minutes stroll.

Nature reserve (sea birds inc flamingos) and famous Portuguese water dogs - 10 minutes walk.


Faro airport is 20 minutes by car/taxi/bus. Car hire not necessary. Taxi service with pick-up from airport can be arranged at reasonable cost - approx €23 e/way. Takes you to our door.

A frequent bus service to Algarvian towns or even Seville for the day is possible.

There is also a single track coastal train from Olhao which goes west to Faro and east along the coast.


Faro or Tavira (both nice , historic towns) about 20 minutes. Mountains and spa waters, hills and lakes approx 30/60 minutes drive.

Spain - 30 minutes to border and Seville is less than 2 hours by bus.

Guests can relax- no need for a car. But plenty of free parking if you do hire one.

Further Details:

Olhao boasts a great fruit and vegetable and fish market as well as many fresh food restaurants. It is a Portuguese town that retains its character and hasn't been changed by the heavy tourism that has affected the Western Algarve.

Along with the traditional cube buildings from its heyday as the major fishing port, it has some lovely old churches, cobbled streets and easy access to the nearby islands. A nature reserve is on the door step - home to many rare bird species. We love the town with it's characteristic cube buildings and roof top terraces, old quaint churches, bustling market, glorious sea front promenade with it's many restaurants. There's a new municipal Theatre , just round the corner with live performances of Music (Jazz, Fado, Classical), Shows and Dance.

There's easy access to the splendid unspoilt islands and local towns along this part of the Eastern Algarve and great nature to be enjoyed. Highly recommended if you want the sea , sand, sun and character - but without the built-up package tourist bit. Let's hope it stays that way!
