About the property

3 doubles, 2 twins, 1 twin & bunk room for 4, 1 bunk room and a small nursery

Our French home, a period property, is full of character yet fitted out with all mod cons. In the main house there is a fully equipped kitchen, dining room and large living room with L-shaped sofa, open fire, large plasma screen, Sky TV, a DVD player with films, a Mac PC, printer, fax, and wireless Lan so you can work from home if needs must. There is one en-suite bathroom, one en-suite shower room, one separate shower room and two separate loos.

In the adjoining Chai there is also a small kitchen at one end of a lovely open plan room that looks out onto the pool. The Chai also has a bathroom with loo plus a separate loo.

The house is very comfortable and well furnished but there are no white sofas, glass tables or irreplaceable items should you have an inquisitive two year old who likes to test things out! There is a delightful walled garden with a heated pool and a cobbled eating area outside the kitchen that is fenced in so wee ones can play while you are in the kitchen.

About Joan Groves

I live on the coast of County Down in Northern Ireland. I am a retired school teacher and the mother/mother-in-law of the property owners who, as both very busy London entrepreneurs, have given me the job of acting as their booking agent. I absolutely love this role. I have been staying at the Marennes house since it was bought in 2007 and my GP husband and I are always at our happiest when we are there. Its a much-loved family home and I have no hesitation in recommending it to others.

Joan Groves purchased this house in 2007

Why Joan Groves chose Charente-Maritime

The charm of Maison Marennes is hard to describe. The old stone house just oozes character yet its fitted out with all mod cons. The interior decor is simple yet stylish. The thick walls keep it cool in the summer but if you are staying for an autumn or winter break then the central heating and huge open log fire make it a very cosy retreat. The walled garden with its attractive heated kidney-shaped pool is perfect for lazy summer days. The grandchildren have been coming here since they were toddlers when the secluded lagoon of Marennes plage and La Palmyre Zoo were their favourite haunts. Now they are in their early teens the games room at the house with it Wii and table tennis table etc has come into its own and visiting the nearby water park and tree climbing adventure park are favourite pastimes when they aren't playing water polo in the pool or are off on their bikes.

What makes this house unique

Getting all the family round the large outside dining table on the cobbled terrace just outside the kitchen and under the beautifully lit pergola is one of my favourite things about staying at the house. Lunch and evening meal can take hours as the atmosphere lends itself to great chat and craic. Needless to say the food is wonderful. You might be eating prawns or langoustine that you have bought from one of the fish stalls a short cycle ride away or tucking into delicious bread and cheese bought at the market house a couple of minutes walk away.

Just perfect

  • 5 of 5

We invited two other families (12 of us in total) to join us for our third visit to Maison Marennes. Everything about the week was absolutely fantastic. The location is great - Marennes has everything you might need (brasseries, supermarket, boulangeries, cinema, park...); easy cycling for even reluctant young riders as all the cycle routes are so flat; a church tower to climb; oyster beds to visit; a child-friendly beach with walking distance; surfing beaches slightly further afield, etc. The house is beautifully furnished, incredibly well equipped: the latter being what really sets it apart from any other holiday rental we have used. It is probably better equipped than most family homes - whatever the children or adults wanted to do, the relevant book / game / kitchen utensil / gadget / bike / pool toy could be found! Joan took our booking extremely efficiently, gave excellent directions and put us in touch with the local housekeepers who were able to provide a meal for us on arrival. We will definitely be back!

Maison Marennes is the idyllic holiday choice! Me and my family (of 3 kids ages 3,7 and 10) have taken a summer rental most years since 2011. We keep returning here for several reasons. The house is stunning in an enclosed garden, equipped as well (or better!) as any family home. The location is perfect for easy access from several airports and there are countless amenities in the region to avail of plus the house is strolling distance from restaurants and shops aswell as 7 min from the beach. There is a warm family atmosphere to the house, perfect for small or large groups of people and the owners are very generous with the use of the house, including bikes etc. In addition they are constantly upgrading and improving things. The owners (not on site) make every effort possible to ensure ones stay is perfect and are very friendly. Booking and payment is easy, professional and overall the family is a pleasure to rent from. There are local caretakers also around – whom also enjoy all needs are met. This property is in my opinion a 5 star property which my only reservation in publicly recommending it is that I won’t secure future bookings! Cannot recommend Maison Marennes enough.

Owner's Response: What a super review - thank you very much. Maison Marennes is a much-loved family home so we really like having families returning year after year and particularly like knowing that our house is the venue for family celebrations. This year we have hosted sixtieth and seventieth birthday celebrations with Grannies , Grandpas, toddlers et al . Next year we already have a golden wedding celebration and a fortieth birthday party booked. Of course all age groups are well catered for and are very welcome!

Perfect property in MARENNES with a special charm

  • 5 of 5

This is the second time I've been on a 'girly' long weekend to Maison Marennes at the end of September. It's my favourite holiday house . No need for a car , just dander through the delightful blue door down the winding cobbled streets to the town centre with its traditional Market House, about 200 meters away. As to the house, everything is SUR PLACE. The secluded walled garden and pool make for a happy , relaxed holiday . I can thoroughly recommend this property .

Great venue for various ages family holiday

  • 5 of 5

Our family group consisted of babies/toddlers/ parents and grandparents.

We arrived to find a beautiful, spotless house in a superb location, right in the centre of a picturesque village. Everything we needed could be found within a few minute's walk; croissants, market, supermarket, bars, and restaurants. Other excellent restaurants were a short drive away.

The house offered entertainment for all of us. The pool was great, there were bicycles, a games room, barbecue area and quiet areas to escape the bustle of family life.

We had lovely weather and a wonderful holiday. We intend to return!

Beautiful property in a lovely setting

  • 5 of 5

The house matches its description but offers so much more! We were on our first family holiday for five years and expectations/excitement were high. We were not disappointed! We asked if a few provisions could be in the fridge as we were arriving later on a Sunday. This was no problem and we arrived to food, drink, all the beds made and the sun still shining. The house itself is just perfect - well furnished, comfortable, spacious. The facilities are excellent - I even picked up a Ping Pong bat for the first time in about 15 years. The younger ones took the bikes out and we all basked in the sunshine around - an in - the pool. Marennes is a lovely place to be - not too big and not too small. We tried a couple of the local restaurants - both excellent - but it was so nice at the house that we preferred to go to the market and cook a meal 'at home'. We can highly recommend it!

La Vie en Rose

  • 5 of 5

Accommodation is exactly as described so no need to dwell on that.

For us the whole joy of the villa and its position is the atmosphere and the feeling that one can just slot into the french way of life totally.

Starting with the fresh croissants in the morning to the lack of other foreign tourists in the village it is like a delightful change of culture.Add that to lazy days round the pool sipping french wine at bargain prices and lots of great drives and fun visits to La Rochelle and you have the recipe for a perfect holiday.

We can't wait to go back.

Car: recommended

Benefiting from the wonderful micro climate of the Cote Atlantique, Marennes is about 45 minutes from La Rochelle. Maison Marennes, a large period townhouse with walled garden and a heated pool, is two minutes from the village centre and 5 min by car/15mins by bike, from the sea. This is oyster country, the roads are flat and perfect for cycling and there are small marinas and beaches dotted along the coast with Ile D'oleron on the doorstep as well as the more renowned alternatives in Royan and La Rochelle not far away. The zoo in La Palmyre, rated as one of the best in Europe, is about a twenty minute drive away. There is also a forest climbing centre nearby. Although ideal for families with lots of fun playing in the lovely private garden with its kidney-shaped heated pool and trampoline and visiting the local beaches, zoo etc, the location has lots to offer grown-ups too with numerous excellent restaurants, great food markets, patisseries, fishmongers etc, just a stroll away.
