La Maison dans le Ciel's glory is the view from the top floor living room, which does feel as if is high in the sky. At the back of the house, it is about 14m in the air. The floor to ceiling windows open on a panorama of the Luberon hills and Vaucluse Mountains, making it a perfect spot for drinks or a meal on a summer evening as the sun sets and a breeze blows. You can even see eagles from your armchair. The house has oak-beamed ceilings, a large traditional fireplace and original Provencal tiled floors. It is in Bonnieux's most picturesque street, alongside ancient buildings, at the centre of the village. Bonnieux is one of the most attractive Luberon villages. On the slopes of the mountains, it is a maze of steep, narrow streets, staircases and passageways. The village is surrounded by wine chateaux and co-operatives. There is superb walking over the wild moorland above the village, and among the orchards and vineyards below it. There is bike hire, horse riding, tennis and boules.

I live and work in London and though I dreamt of having a house in France for many years, I never thought I would manage to do it. I still have to pinch myself whenever I mention it, even though I have now owned it for over 6 years.

I really enjoyed furnishing the house from local brocantes and markets, and it feels very comfortable. The village is a real delight, and being right at its heart is lovely. I still get a tingle whenever I go to the Friday market, and especially in winter, when there's snow on the hills, and bright, clear blue sky.

Why John Tuckey chose Bonnieux

I really like the Luberon because it is a beautiful mix of the rugged landscape of the tops of the mountains and the gentler countryside of the valleys. It has the clear, bright blue skies of Provence. The ancient villages perched on the sides of the mountains are really lovely (Bonnieux is one of these, in my view, the best). It's also one of the best areas in France for wildlife. I enjoy birdwatching and here there are Short-toed Eagles, Honey Buzzards, Hobbies, Eagle Owls. Yet it's easy to get to from the UK. I prefer using the train, from London to Avignon, which is quick and very comfortable (in the summer, on Saturdays, Eurostar run a non-stop service all the way.) And Marseilles and Avignon Airports are both less than an hour away.

What makes this house unique

What I love about this house is that it combines the picturesque with the practical, because of its stupendous setting on top of medieval ramparts. It is a picturesque house, in a picturesque street, in a picturesque village, offering superb views of countryside and mountains. Yet it is in the village centre, so there's no need to use a car to go to the shops, or excellent restaurants or sports facilities. Bonnieux has plenty of shops (many Luberon villages have none). And the quality of the shops is very high. The butcher has all home-made products and will cut the meat as you want it. The bakers bake on the premises. The market is excellent. There's a supermarket for groceries. All 2 minutes away. And then there's fantastic countryside a few minutes away, in any direction.

John Tuckey was very agreeable and easy to communicate with. His home in Bonnieux is a historic charmer. Enter the rustic kitchen from the picturesque historic cobbled street and a huge fireplace and lovely stone sink set the tone of warm ambiance. A farm table, an armoire with all the kitchen necessities, dining for 6 and windows to your french village life make this a place to call home. Appliances include a full size refrigerator (hooray!!!). Up the brick tile stairs to 2 bedrooms, simply furnished but spacious and comfortable and lovely views. The bathroom (with washer/dryer) is larger than it shows in the photos. The crowning glory is the comfortable, cozy, 3rd floor lounge with beamed ceilings and a view that looks west (beautiful sunsets) over rooftops and vineyards toward the hill town of Lacoste and others in the distance. John's place was just what we expected and wanted. The stairs and 3 levels are part of the charm. Good wifi. It was so convenient to many lovely restaurants. The local grocer, boulangerie, patisserie, boucherie were close at hand. Don't miss the Bonnieux Friday Open Market. Walking all the streets of Bonnieux was our favorite pastime! We loved our stay at John's home and wished we could have been there longer. We would highly recommend this place unless you can't do stairs. We are 60 & 70 years old and didn't have a problem.


Provence is always beautiful, but, in this marvellous house, it is even more so. All the family, and the cats, found it wonderful and that they have experienced Provence in a special way.

Bonnieux is a delightful village. We felt that a good amount of the charm we experienced was the result of our stay in a wonderfully renovated, yet faithfully and lovingly preserved house in the heart of the village. John’s careful selection of furnishings blends beautifully with the house’s traditional appearance, yet includes all the conveniences of modern living. The most captivating part of the house is the “salon” on the top floor. The view is simply breathtaking and one we never tired of watching. The cooling mistral breeze was inviting and we never felt the heat of the day inside. Our beds were very comfortable and there is plenty of room to store luggage and ample dressers for your belongings. The online information which John provides concerning the house and amenities are accurate and well detailed so you can be confident in making your arrangements.

Notes on accommodation: The house has an eccentric, steep staircase, and the living room window, which some 14 metres above the street, could be opened by a small child. The house is, therefore, not suitable for small children who are old enough to be mobile, but too young to appreciate danger. Outside: The living room's a large, floor to ceiling picture window, has a wide opening - there's a railing - looking out on the view pictured on this website. It's high up and breezy (on that side, the house is about 14 metres/45 feet above the street). So, sitting by the open window is very open-air, and is a lovely place to eat or have an aperitif as the sun sets behind the Vaucluse Mountains. The village also has some lovely outdoor areas, with seating and picnic tables. Utility Room: There's an automatic washer/dryer, an iron and ironing board, an airer and a hair dryer in the bathroom. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels and linen are provided for use in the house at no extra cost. Other: The eccentric stairwell, with its extraordinary array of doors, with some flamboyant latches, is decorated with an ancient killim from Kazakhstan, and some traditional, highly-decorated food trays from Darfur.

Beautiful location, amazing view!

Had a great 5 days in this bonnieux house. The best part was lounging on the top floor watching the sunset with the big windows open, drinking wine.

The kitchen is well equipped and the location is lovely with great restaurants, grocery, and shops within a 5 minute walk. Parking was easy to find just a few minutes from the place. We've been to the area before and would go back to Bonnieux, its central for exploring the entire region. Great communication with owner and easy check in and out.

Beautiful town, wonderful house

We thoroughly enjoyed our time in Bonnieux - for us this was the best of the Provence towns we visited, and it was fabulous to stay in this traditional type of house. Everything that we needed was provided and parking was very close by. Lovely to have a glass of wine and enjoy the beautiful view from lounge after a long day of exploring!

We wish we could have stayed longer, but would love to come back some day. Thanks!

Amazing stay

We spent lovely two weeks in John's flat. It was comfortable and spacious for two people. We particularly loved the view from the living room, and we spent countless hours there enjoying meals, drinks, reading, etc. The stairs are rather steep and require a bit of work, but if you don't have a major knee problem, you'd be ok. There is a great butcher in the village - we had highly quality patès, terrines, fresh goat cheeses, and sausage from there. We ate at two restos: Un P'tit Coin de Cuisine and l'Heure Bleue by Yoha, and both were quite good. The first one was recommended by a local. You can buy nice rosè wine by the litre (very inexpensive) from the Cave de Bonnieaux, but minimum purchase is 5 L (it goes fast, lol!). They will fill up your own plastic bottles. There is also red and white (we tried them, too), but we found rosè particularly good. A local well-stocked supermarket is only steps away. Madame Gils who looks after the flat is very helpful and makes herself available to assist if needed.

The only minor issue was that we had to use the same towels for two weeks - they were not changed. You can wash them yourself if you'd like, as there is a washing machine in the flat, but you will need to buy a large bottle of laundry detergent in the supermarket (or bring some with you), as there is none available in the flat. I gather that most people do not travel with laundry detergent, and buying a large bottle for one or two small washes is not very economical.

Overall, we had a great stay in Bonnieuax, and we highly recommend John's flat.

Quaint town house in beautiful village

Very old quirky terraced house stiuated in the middle of the town close to the small supermarket, restaurants and cafes.

Easy to find but no vehicular access. Plenty of parking close by however.

The property is spread over 3 floors with the kitchen on the bottom and sitting room upstairs. Well equipped with everything you might need.

Comfortable beds with nice quality linen. Good sized bathroom with shower, although water was not very hot and we couldn't work out how to turn up the heat.

Front bedroom was occasionally noisy with people walking back home at night and it was too warm to close the windows so that might be an issue if you are used to quiet - easily solved with ear plugs.

View from upstairs bedroom very beautiful especially to watch the spectacular sunset.

All in all nice play to stay in this friendly, attractive village in the Luberon.

Owner's Response: I really appreciate this positive review, and I would like to reinforce some of the positive comments and respond to the few negative ones. I like the description of the house as quirky, because I want it to be individual, and not the standard rental property, without being so personal to me that guests feel uncomfortable. I stay in the house for holidays myself, and that is one reason it is well-equipped. In particular, the kitchen equipment has been chosen on the basis of what is needed for cooking even ambitious meals, and I know it is right, because I use it all myself. As for the view, and, especially the sunsets, I still really love them, even after seeing them for eight years. I am sorry the guest had a problem with the water not being hot enough. The temperature has now been turned up. Of course, I try to anticipate and prevent any problems, but, inevitably, some will unexpectedly arise. In this case, the guest wrote that they could not work out how to turn the water temperature up, but, in this house, it really is not necessary for guests to try to solve problems themselves. The house manager lives two doors away, can be contacted when there is any issue, and there will almost always be a quick solution, or I can be contacted by e-mail, text message or phone, and I will work out a solution with the manager. I make a point of keeping guests informed about the progress of a solution if it is not immediate. I was not aware of any problem with noise, though, being at the centre of the village, the street is quite lively, as it is very interesting and attractive and people enjoy looking at it, or they are on their way to the nearby restaurants. Normally, however, there is little noise at night. If guests are bothered by noise, and if there are only two - as is most often the case - they can ask to be moved into the other bedroom, which is at the back of the house, and much quieter. If guests think they might be bothered by noise, then, if they tell me at the time of booking, I will ensure they are in the quieter room.

The nearest resort on the Mediterranean is the little village of Sausset les Pins, which is about 67kms from Bonnieux.

However, the nearest swimming is at a pretty lake called Étang de la Bonde. It is a half hour drive from Bonnieux.


Marseilles Airport: 1 hour drive.

Avignon Airport: 30 minutes drive.

Avignon TGV railway station (links with Eurostar from London) and Avignon Central railway station (in July and August, direct Eurostar from London) are both 45 minutes drive.

Channel ports are about 1000kms. Bonnieux is 30 minutes drive from the Avignon Sud turn off on the A7 autoroute.

A car is essential, and car hire is available at both airports and stations. There is plenty of free parking close to the house.


The sights and facilities of Bonnieux are a few minutes walk. There is excellent walking and biking straight out of the village. The picturesque villages, sights and walks of the Luberon are within 20 minutes drive, with the Cedar Forest and the Roman Pont Julien each 10 minutes away. Freshwater swimming is 30 minutes drive. Apt, the nearest town, is 15 minutes drive. The museums and sights of Avignon and Aix-en-Provence are each 45 minutes drive, as is the 2000m peak of Mont Ventoux.

Further Details:

With the house at the centre of the village, there is easy access to excellent local food. Bonnieux has 10 restaurants and 3 bars, all very close. There are 2 patisseries, so that fresh bread and pastries for breakfast are a very short walk away. There is an excellent butcher. Fish stalls visit - you can usually get everything for an authentic bouillabaisse - on Wednesday and for the Friday market, which also has local vegetables, cheese, wine and olive products. There is a small supermarket in Bonnieux, and 2 large ones in Apt.

The kitchen is well-equipped to cook Provencal-style, and there is a collection of cookery books in French and English.

There is plenty of scope for wine-tasting and buying. The local wines are Cotes du Luberon and Cotes du Ventoux. There are several good chateaux and village wine co-operatives in the area.

Bonnieux has several antique shops, each with a distinctive style, and Isle sur la Sorgue, said to be the largest antique centre in France, after Paris, is around 30 minutes drive away. The town has an interesting bric-a-brac market on Sunday morning.

The Luberon has, for many years, been a magnet for artists and craftspeople, and Bonnieux has two potteries, several art galleries, and shops selling locally-made, high quality jewellery, accessories, furnishings and decorations.

The Luberon is full of beautiful 'perched villages,' and spectacular limestone landscapes. It is one of France's richest areas for wildlife. Short-toed Eagles and Hobbies can be seen from the house, while Bonelli's Eagles can be seen nearby. The Vaucluse has 12 nature reserves, and the wetlands reserve of the Camargue is about 1½ hour's drive.

The post office in Bonnieux has an ATM, which takes UK cards, and fuel is available from the garage in the village.
