I live In Halifax, England with my wife Sarah. We bought a plot of land with my brother, Lee and his wife Helen in 2005 and we built the villa using local builders. We have enjoyed some fantastic times, the children love coming out to Crete and have spent large parts of their school holidays here.
Owner purchased this Villa in 2005
Why Owner chose Plaka
Friends of ours already had a place in Almerida, they Invited us out for a holiday, we loved the area and decided to buy this elavated plot of land with spectacular sea & mountain views. It is a great place to relax, the weather is consistent and the cretan diet is one of the healthiest in the world! Aside from the wonderful beaches and stunning countryside, Crete is steeped in History. The Turks and the Venetians have at one time ruled the Island and left their historical mark here. It is a fascinating place to visit with over 320 days of sunshine each year.
What makes this Villa unique
The sunsets from our villa are out of this world!

The photographs do not do justice to this fabulous villa. On arrival, we were blown away by the breath taking view across the pool area and out over the bay. The pool area and pool itself were perfect with plenty of space and beds for soaking up the sun. The covered terrace was a welcome relief from the heat.
The inside of the villa certainly didn't disappoint either; modern, perfectly laid out, beautifully maintained and everything we needed for a relaxing holiday. We sat on the top balcony every night watching the amazing sunsets, each one different from the last.
Plaka square is the perfect place for an evening out, we ate in Elpis a few times . Food and service brilliant !! Wander a little further and sit in one of the many tavernas in Álmyrida with the sea lapping against your feet.
Beach here is lovely too with Crystal clear water. Recommend a snorkelling trip with Georgios, great fun!! Also try paddle boarding if you're feeling energetic.
Fabulous food, wonderful people, perfect location, amazing villa, what more can we say !!!!!!! Never been to Crete before but definitely be back...............next year hopefully!!!!!
Dealing with David the owner was easy and the support from Richard and Ann who look after the villa was excellent especially when we managed to lock ourselves out !!!!
Thank you so much, Shirley Valentine had the right idea !!
Antony, Jane, Cari and Meg
Thanks for the positive review Antony and for taking care of the villa. Happy to hear you had a great time. Regards, David
Fantastic villa in an amazing location
From the moment we arrived at the villa we were overwhelmed with the amazing views. We visit Plaka every year however this year we had our 15 month old with us, David the host was exceptional at providing us with all the information we needed. The tavernas in Plaka are great for families and we especially love The Emerald (Elements restaurant) The views from the villa are spectacular, we loved every moment. Many thanks
Relaxing beautiful home in stunning scenery
This is the place to have a proper holiday in wonderful surroundings. It has beautiful views from every angle and the house is high up above Almerida so you get a nice breeze.
The sunsets are amazing and the pool is well maintained so if it's a little hot, then it's easy to cool down quickly.
The house is well equipped, maintained, and well located. Almerida has a lovely local charm and nearby Plaka has lots of good local eateries at reasonable prices.
Kalives is a little further away and is also by the sea. But if you prefer sightseeing to seaside, then there are the historic ports of Chania and Rethymno not too far away.
Rethmyno is a vibrant university town buzzing with atmosphere.
So all in all, a great place to relax, and to enjoy the outstanding views and have a lovely holiday.
The pictures cannot do the place justice. The villa is immaculately clean and has spectacular views overlooking the bay. Three bedrooms are located downstairs of which the two doubles open out onto a veranda leading to the pool area and a twin with its own little patio. The lounge is open plan and located upstairs with doors opening out onto a balcony with seating for six. This really makes the most of the views, and trust me, you will enjoy many a meal (or beverage) just staring at the sunsets which are out of this world!! A couple of tavernas are located within walking distance and Plaka is just a little further and contains its own lovely restaurants overlooking a lovely sandy beach. The pool area is excellent, with chairs, tables, and sunbeds provided. Overall I cannot recommend this villa enough. We are explorers so never holiday in the same place twice, but on this occasion I know I will be contacting David someday to book his families beautiful villa once again, just so I can stare dumfounded at the colours of those sunsets.
It's difficult to describe this in any other way! The villa is spacious, beautifully furnished and equipped and was so clean when we arrived that I tried to walk through a closed glass door! Lesson learned, the main balcony overlooks both the pool and the magnificent Souda Bay to the north. We spent many hours just relaxing, eating and drinking and watching the marine 'traffic' heading in and out of port. Turn to the west and you can watch the sun setting over the White Mountains. The villa is conveniently located just outside Plaka. There's a decent small supermarket within easy walking distance (if you don't mind a bit of a climb on the way back), along with numerous good and very welcoming local restaurants. More shops and a sandy beach are only a short drive away. We would recommend hiring a car if you want to get about, although you could easily spend a week simply enjoying the villa, the climate and the immediate surroundings. Chania is lovely. However, heed the warnings! We didn't, and were duly ripped off in buying lunch at a restaurant overlooking the harbour.
We travelled as 5 adults on a rest and relaxation holiday. We got bliss. The villa is extremely spacious with stunning sea views. We were able to walk to several nearby villages including the coastal village of Almyrida. There were many places to eat although we fell in love with Takis and as it was in Plaka village we returned on several occasions. As we travelled at the end of the season we did not require the air conditioning as we found the villa very light and airy. We hired a car which is definately needed and we found the villa quite easily with the instuctions given. So all I can say is a big thank you to David and family for sharing your home. We will be back
There is a secluded `secret beach` with caves about 5 min drive away. The main resort of Almerida with its blue flag beach is only 2km and has a water sports centre. There are many coves and beaches throughout this part of western Crete.
The nearest airport is Chania which is about 35-40 minute drive. Heraklion airport is an 1 hour 45 mins along the coastal road. Car hire is recommended and available at both airports. All the low cost airlines fly to Crete; Easyjet, Ryanair & jet2. Between them you can get to both Heraklion & Chania from the UK. There are several charter flights to both airports from all over the UK.
The village of Plaka is a 5-10 minute walk down the hill with 4 tavernas, one of which is the best in the area. There is also an Italian restaurant, a couple of bars and a mini market. Almerida is 5 minutes in a car, here you will find bars, restaurants, mini markets, shops and local tavernas. Vamos and Kalyves and other small villages are all located within a short drive. Roman ruins at the ancient city of Aptera - 15 mins drive.
Petrol station 2 mins, bakery/butchers in the next village. ATM machines/supermarkets 10 min drive. Monastries, museums and other historical/archaeological sites close by. Water park 25 mins drive, Rethyminon 45 mins, Lake Kournas 25 mins. The south coast is 1 hour by car across the mountain ranges. Spectacular drive and scenery - not for the faint hearted! Athens 40 minutes by plane.
