About David Alderton
Kirsty & David are a London based couple with a large family of teenagers. We inherited the property from Kirsty's parents and embarked upon a rebuild project which was completed in August 2009. We have tried to recreate the character of the old house and add touches of our own style to create a family home. It's our 2nd home, as we still have our family to raise in London. So, as you use the house you'll find panelling that was restored from the old house, you'll find furniture made by Kirsty's father in many of the rooms and you'll find family artefact's throughout. To help support our dream and to ensure that it is used, we have decided to let Scotland Farmhouse. We hope anyone booking the house will fall in love with the place as we have.
David Alderton purchased this Farmhouse in 1970
Why David Alderton chose Downham Market
In its previous state, Scotland Farmhouse was a working smallholding, where Kirsty's parents grew their own fruit & vegetables, bred chickens, rabbits and goats. As the years passed, being self sufficient became more of a challenge and they came back to London to be closer to their family. The farmhouse started to deteriorate and subsidence took its toll forcing us to demolish the farmhouse. However, by reusing all the bricks, slate and some internal artifacts Scotland Farmhouse was rebuilt. The only new modern design feature was the inclusion of a balcony allowing visitors to view the Littleport Riviera, as at night you can see the distant twinkling of the “Lights of Littleport” across the flat fenlands that was once the sea.
What makes this Farmhouse unique
Scotland Farmhouse is a large, secluded, fully facilitated country house, which is perfect for a family, group of friends or just a cosy couple. It has easy access to the Norfolk coast, Thetford Forest, The Broads, Cambridge and Ely. London is only an hour away by train. Being in the heart of the Fenland means access to many nature reserves, such as Welney Wetlands. Sandringham (Queen Elizabeth's country house) and Newmarket racecourse are a short drive away. Should you choose to put the car keys away, there garden games and fishing all available at the house.

Wonderful location if you want seclusion
11 of us fitted easily into the house. Very well equipped and lovely big table for us all to sit around. Sitting room lots of chairs and sofas but not the most comfortable. Reached lots of locations easily (recommend the rare breads farm). Overall a good time had by all
It is too long for me to wright all the details, but basically the house was full and I mean full of insects, the kids could not sleep at night there were so many, and I went around with a hoover in my bedroom trying to hoover up all theres live insects.
The next morning we looked for a new holiday house in the area and moved out, for the owner to have try and come and fix the problem would have taken too much of our precious time and I don't believe he could have sorted it out, just don't bother taking the chance and thinking it won't happen to you, there are plenty of better houses around.
I did ask for some sort of refund but the owner would not hear of it!! this was after traveling 7 hours with my little kids, what a welcome.
We are really sorry that you feel the need to post this kind of review especially after we went the extent of purchasing an additional freezer to suit your dietary requirements.
As I explained at the time, if you had taken the time to advise us of your concerns,we could have looked at a solution in order to deal with the extreme weather and subsequent increase in insects. Informing us a week later gave us no opportunity to work together.
We have had many years of excellent reviews about the house and can only conclude that your poor review is a consequence of being refused a refund. It saddens us to think that someone we welcomed into our home would make such a spiteful review.
Beautiful house, great location. Would recommend it to anyone.
Lovely relaxing holiday.kids loved playing in the garden with all the toys provided.
The family really enjoyed staying at this spacious house. It had everything we needed for 10 people .The welcome pack of wine ,chocs ,tea ,coffee etc.was a nice touch. We were lucky with the weather ,so spent a lot of time in the large garden and the children could make as much noise as they liked as there are no near neighbours. We spent a couple of evenings walking along the lane ' bunny spotting '.Some of the dining chairs were a bit wobbly as were the garden chairs but it didn't bother us too much.Would love to stay here again.
Old-world charm with all mod cons
Everything in place as described. The only (slight) difficulty was getting to grips with the hot water - but the Nest controller is easy to use.
Lovely house in a fabulous location
Everything you need here - plenty of room for a big family gathering .
10 of us spent a great weekend here - could of stayed longer!!
