Traditional village house with raised terrace and spectacular views of valley and mountains

Casa Luna is a traditional two-storey house in a quiet part of the friendly village of Capileira. Unique among the village's holiday houses, Casa Luna has a 'tinao' - an Alpujarran raised terrace outside the first-floor living room, with spectacular views of the valley, mountains and lower village. The house has recently been refurbished, maximising space while retaining its natural rustic charm and traditional features, such as exposed chestnut ceiling beams and local tiles. Main features are a large well-fitted kitchen on the ground floor, with the living room, bedroom and terrace upstairs. The centre of the village is only a few minutes walk, offering a variety of restaurants, cafes and shops. Walking or off-road cycling in the area is superb. Paths extend up, down or across the valley but if you prefer, a very enjoyable day can be spent just relaxing on the terrace. The house is fully registered with the tourist agency of Andalucia as a holiday home - registration number VTR/GR/01025.

About The Owner

We are a Spanish-American/English couple, and work as a teacher and writer in busy Hong Kong. We both love the mountains and fresh air, and spend as much time as we can (though not enough!) in Capileira and the Alpujarras.

The Owner purchased this house in 2008

Why The Owner chose Capileira

We started visiting the Alpujarras regularly in 2005 after a friend settled in the area, quickly grew very fond of place and people and decided to buy a small property in Capileira - our favourite of the high Alpujarras villages. We have made many friends in the village and remain in close touch with the former owners, Pepe and Carmen, who help us look after the house. Capileira is a friendly, relaxing village, but has enough bars and restaurants to provide choice for an evening out. Other options are only a short drive away - or a stroll to Bubion.

What makes this house unique

We particularly like the location of Casa Luna (named after our favourite habit of watching the moon from the terrace), which is close to the heart of the village but far enough to ensure peace and quiet. The traditional 'tinao' terrace makes the house special - especially as it stands in a southwest-facing corner of the village with great views of the valley and sierra. It is also next to a small copse of walnut trees, (once farmed in the area), which provide refuge for quite a few bird species - and lovely birdsong. There are few better places to sit and relax. Our close friend Lyn and former owner Carmen help us look after the house and are within easy reach if you need assistance.

Notes on accommodation: Heating is provided by electric radiator and a glass-fronted wood burning stove. Electricity is included in the rental price. Firewood is available locally and delivery can be arranged. Pets welcome. Outside: Casa Luna's lovely terrace has a grape vine overhead to provide protection from the sun in summer - and tasty grapes in the autumn! The terrace is large enough for a few people to sit out or dine comfortably and offers great views of the valley and village. Table and chairs provided. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels and bed linen are changed prior to arrival. Please bring own towels for outside/pool/beach use. Washing machine, iron and ironing board provided. Other: Wooden outdoor table and chairs, washing machine and outside wash basin on terrace.

Great hiking base in beautiful Pueblos Blanco

My wife and I enjoyed a 5 night stay in this little beauty of a cottage. Inside is basic but has everything you need. The kitchen is a little dark but well equipped. Shower is a good size and height (I'm 6"2 and didn't struggle). The bed is really comfortable, had some great nights sleep. However none of this really matters as the star of the show is the terrace. I loved waking up early before the sun came up around 6am, heading downstairs to make a black coffee in the percolator and then sitting out on the terrace to watch the bats flying around and the amazing variety of birds. Equally after a long days hiking (which is some of the best I have ever done) it was great to sit out in the late afternoon sunshine with some wine and tapas. Also had one of the best meals @ El Corral del Castaño on the square. Will definitely be coming back!

Atmospheric village house with a stunning outlook

Casa Luna is a lovely, quaint village house which has spectacular views from its terrace. It's a perfect base for those who love walking, cycling, the great outdoors, and traditional bars and restaurants. We thoroughly enjoyed our eight-week stay, and did not ever tire of the many walks - long and short - which are on Capileira's doorstep.

For a small village, Capileira has a good choice of traditional, local bars, restaurants and shops. We were particularly impressed by the two excellent bakeries, the fabulous local butcher's shop, the chocolate shop, the number of shops selling local products, and the fact that the small weekly (Tuesday) market was operational on some pretty wild, wintery days.

A lovely retreat away from the heat of the surrounding area.

We were impressed with the spacious property, the facilities provided, and the communications with the owner. Our arrival time was agreed, and we were welcomed as soon as we reached the property. Everything was explained, and our host was very friendly and helpful. The village has quite a few restaurants for meals at a reasonable price, most of which also have wifi. Information about the neighbourhood was provided in the property, and we were told of contact points if we needed more details. Everything about the stay was just right, and we would be happy to return.

Stunning situated house with views over the valley in the pedestrian alleyways of this lovely town

The house is on a corner with unimpeded views from the first floor lounge terrace across the gorge. Currently, the village map describes a walking tour of the village going through the tinea under the terrace, allowing for plenty of people watching. We really loved its situation just a little way down from the town square.

The house was well maintained with adequate kitchen equipment, towels and bedding, and a wood burner for the winter and extra heating if required. Arrival/check in was efficient as arranged.

Our week in May went from a sizzling 32 down to 8 during the day which sent us into a local bar that had its wood burner going!

As keen walkers we found this a great place to base ourselves, with plenty of walks from the door. However, it is important to note that the village is very steep and although all the paths are well maintained they are challenging on the knees for the unwary and can be a bit slippery when wet. (wheeled luggage becomes slightly redundant)

We would definitely recommend Casa Luna and Capileira for those who want a quiet, quirky place to stay with lots of good paths and easy going traditional food available in a number of restaurants and bars, just don't plan to eat before 8pm.

a fantastic gem of a place

Casa Luna is just as its described in the listing but better! it's a traditional Alpujarran house with everything we needed in a very quiet part of the village, but close enough to all that Capilleira has to offer. The best bit of the house is the 'tinao', a traditional, vine covered, balcony where we ate, watched the sun light up the valley above, below and across the valley, the moon rise opposite (its not called Casa Luna for nothing) and stars, listened and watched the birds on the gorgeously scented fig and chestnut trees below and flying all around. The local market and shops provided a superb array of food which we cooked in the well equipped kitchen and there were lots of restaurants of all sorts in the village when we couldn't be bothered. It's an ideal place to head off into the mountains to walk the many tracks criss-crossing the valleys, following the ancient irrigation channels to other villages, or up onto the high plateau. Every trip we saw birds we had never seen before. There are bikes to hire, but we never tired of just setting off in a different direction to see where we'd end up. On our second visit to Casa Luna we even got to the top of Spain's highest mountain- and easy but long day out.

We have raved about this place and would recommend it to anyone, hoping to go for a third time later this year.

Ohh the view from the terrace......

Sorry for delay with regard our stay in December, 2016!

The Poqueira gorge is our fave in the Alpujarras and the view from the terrace at Casa Luna is second to none. To watch sunrise and sunset from here I doubt can be beaten!

Luna is a lovely, cosy, traditional house and one that we'll definitely return to. We tend to dine out, but the facilities are there for you to decide.

You'll certainly return home refreshed and with that view permanently emblazened in your mind.

The nearest beaches are about an hour's drive, at Motril and Salobrena. Nicer beaches are a little further.


Granada airport is closest - about 70km or an hour and a half by car; Malaga airport is about 150km, around two and a half hours by car. Car hire is recommended, though public transport by bus is possible (twice a day). Taxi pickup can also be arranged from/to the airports.


Many picturesque villages are only a short distance away, with Bubion just a 20 minute walk. Orgiva is the local market town, about half an hour by car; historic Granada and the Alhambra Palace are about 70-80 mins drive; Motril offers the nearest 'big' supermarket - about an hour.

The village has a bank with a universal ATM machine, two small supermarkets, a good online cafe/bar, many bars and restaurants, two good bakeries, various craft and souvenir shops. There are many interesting local diversions, including hiking, horse-riding, mountain-biking, painting, pottery, dancing (flamenco), historic churches/villages, birdwatching, sitting in cafes watching the world go by.
