About the property

Le Moulin

If you like history, outdoor life and easy access to local amenities, you'll love Le Moulin.

Built in the late 18th century to serve the adjacent chateau, this restored former watermill retains many original features including the old millroom and a 100m watercourse.

Le Moulin comprises three individual gites - L'Olivier, Le Laurier and Le Figuier. Each gite has its own distinct character, all have two bedrooms and are suitable for up to four people.

All gite guests have access to our 11m, south-facing, secluded and heated pool, as well as all the gardens and sports facilities. The pool is heated from the first week of May to mid September when water temperature is between 25-30 degrees.

Each gite has its own shaded and private breakfast/barbecue area immediately outside its entrance.

Le Moulin is set within two acres of grounds - plenty of space for exploring, football, trampolining, barbecuing and relaxing. The property includes lawns, woodland, a river, even a bamboo grove!

The poolside area includes 100sqm of terracing and decking and receives uninterrupted sun from sunrise to sunset.

Also, you won't need to jump into a car every time you want a baguette - the bakery, post office, supermarket, chemist, hairdressers and butchers are all within a five minute stroll.

There is also a direct bus into Carcassonne which leaves about 10 times a day, costs 1 euro and takes about 20 minutes

About Helen

It was April 2006 when me, my husband Mick and our two sons Jack and Harry swapped the buzz of central London for the sun and tranquility of Languedoc Roussillon.

So much has changed since then.

Despite having no previous experience in construction, Mick has spent several years renovating our lovely Moulin, building two gites and a swimming pool.

I now run a small business teaching English to local children and adults.

And the kids are continuing their progress through village school, college and lycee.

August 2010 was a major highlight when me and Mick got married here in our garden, surrounded by dozens of English and French friends and family.

We love this place and think you will too.

Best regards

Helen purchased this apartment in 2007

Why Helen chose Villegailhenc

Family friendly, great for parents as well as kids. Car useful but not necessary. The holiday can be as hectic or as relaxing as you want it to be or a combination of both!

What makes this apartment unique

Living history

Le Moulin has many original features from its former life as a watermill. There are two large millstones in situ in the old millroom - now the Laurier gite. There is a 100m long, 3m deep millrace at the back of the property. There is a network of underground tunnels which brought water to the mill and took it away back to the nearby river afterwards.

And we still have some of the original mechanisms which were used to regulate the flow of water and turn the millstones.

Electric heating and fans are provided as necessary but the thick stone walls provide excellent natural insulation, keeping the rooms warm in winter and cool in summer so there is no need for air conditioning even on the hottest days. A washing machine is available for use by guests - each wash costs 3 euros including washing powder. We also have a range of bikes of various sizes and styles which can be borrowed by guests. They come with helmets, pumps, puncture repair kits and maps. All we ask is a 5 euro payment per bike per week to cover maintenance and repairs. Outside: Two acres of landscaped grounds includes 80sqm of poolside terracing with eight sun loungers plus a substantial adjacent area of decking. Our large fir tree is located in such a way that it provides ample shade over the decking and the terrace yet does not affect the sun's access to the pool. Each gite has its own terrace with table, chairs and barbecue facilities. There is ample space for on-site parking.

A hidden delight in a typical French village

  • 5 of 5

We have just had a smashing week at Le Moulin, nr. Carcassonne. Loads to do, Carcassonne is superb, so interesting, and plenty to see around-about. Helen and Mick are perfect hosts, lots of advice about where to go on visits. Narbonne is an easy drive to the coast with the plage a little further on. The quiet village has a good boulangerie, general store, chemist and charcuterie. At Le Moulin there is a lovely pool, so you can relax for the day or have a dip after a hot day's site seeing and as for the gardens, they are huge!

Fully recommend this holiday let to couples or families.

Great Gite near Carcassonne

  • 4 of 5

Le Moulin is a charming place within the village, set in a few acres of garden there is great privacy. The pool area was well used by us (our frends rented the other gite at the same time). It has plenty space for sun lovers and those needing shade. It is set to the side of the property so you won't get splashed from your patio! The gite itself has what you need, although it isn't huge you won't need it to be as you will have a large patio area out the front where you can sit and relax, eat and bbq. In the village the bar/restaurant was shut for renovation but a pizza van came round on a Thursday which made delicious fresh pizza. The local supermarket is a minute walk away and is well stocked and the boulangerie is great. This is an ideal base for doing as much or as little as you want. You'll need a car. The medieval cite is an obvious visit but Toulouse and the local lakes are definitely recommended.

Helen and Mick, the owners, are great at what they do. Laid back and always helpful.

Lovely Gite in a traditional French Village

  • 4 of 5

Thanks to Helen and Mick for our stay at L'Olivier Vert. The owners were very helpful and friendly. The property is small but set in large grounds and the pool is excellent. Good base to tour from, we enjoyed the medieval city of Carcassonne and the local vineyards. The village is well equipped with butcher, baker and supermarket.

Let Moulin is a great place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

The Gites at Le Moulin are set within 2 acres in a quiet village north of the medieval citadel of Carcassonne. You are assured of a very warm welcome from Helen who will give you all of the information you need for an enjoyable stay. The Gites are well equipped and comfortable and we had everything we needed for our stay. There is plenty of room for children to play within the grounds with a large trampoline and great pool. The terrace around the pool is a real sun trap with shade from the large tree if you need it. Visiting Carcassonne is a must and this is an ideal base to explore. With the Med less than an hour away, canoeing and tours on the canal de midi, there is more than enough to keep you busy. The pizzas from the local bar take out or eat in are the best we have had.

Le Moulin was a great find for us and we would recommend it to anyone.

Joli gîte très agréable

  • 4 of 5

Go cycling!

The area around Villegailhenc is fantastic for on-road and off-road cycling, so why not make the most of our range of bikes?

They are available to borrow - we just ask for a one-off 5 euro payment per bike to help with repairs.

There are all sorts of possibilities, from challenging treks along quiet, well-maintained roads in the stunning Black Mountains, to short meanders through local vineyards.

One neighbouring village boasts its own mountain-biking club - and 150km of well-signposted off-road tracks.

Another popular, if less demanding route is a spin along the nearby Canal du Midi to a local marina for lunch.

We are keen cyclists and have plenty of ideas and maps, so don't hesitate to ask!

Cycling is particularly enjoyable in spring and autumn when the weather is not too hot, but is also possible in high summer if you start early enough and avoid uphill cycling in the afternoon.

All bikes are borrowed by guests at their own risk.

The nearest Mediterranean beaches are an easy 40 minute drive along the autoroute des deux mers.

Le Moulin is 10 minutes drive to Carcassonne airport which serves an ever-increasing number of countries and towns including services to Stansted, Bournemouth, East Midlands, Liverpool, and Glasgow in the UK; Dublin, Shannon and Cork in Ireland; Brussels in Belgium and Frankfurt in Germany. Airport pick-ups available but to get the most from your holiday we would suggest hiring a car. Carcassonne has direct train services to Paris, Marseilles, Toulouse and Quillan in the Pyrenees.

Seven kilometres to UNESCO world heritage medieval city of Carcassonne. Three kilometres to UNESCO world heritage Canal du midi. Five kilometres from 125km of mountain-bike trails in nearby village of Aragon. Twenty minutes drive to beautiful Black Mountains - fantastic for walking and mountain-biking.

Further Details:

Rhere is a bakery with daily-baked croissants, baguettes, wholemeal breads, cakes etc, a reasonably-priced supermarket, butchers, tabac, wine cave, dentist, hairdressers, doctors and a weekly fruit/vegetable market on a Wednesday morning. There is also a restaurant/bar in the village which offers a la carte menus and pizzas. Nearest cashpoint is Villemoustaussou, two km.
