This very large 'maison de maitre' is located on the southern edge of the quiet village of Dun, in the foothills of the mountains. It has three floors. The ground floor comprises a well furnished sitting room with a freeview television for the occasional home comfort after a long day in the sun. An extensive kitchen and open-plan dining area allows you to relax and prepare meals together. There is also a utility room and storage room (with separate drinks fridge). On the first floor, the expansive master bedroom has an en-suite bathroom to match. There is another substantial bedroom and main family bathroom. The sitting room on the 1st floor also has a sofa-bed and can easily be used as a bedroom. The second floor has three en-suite bedrooms and a cool and very comfortable vaulted sitting area, in which to hide away with a good book. This space includes plenty of seating, and another television.

About Jackie Worthington
We live in England but have spent many holidays in various parts of France, mostly wine growing areas or ski resorts. We first visited the Ariege in 2005 and bought the house in 2006. We did not intend to buy such a large house but are very glad we did. We have plenty of room for our children, friends and relatives too.
Jackie Worthington purchased this House in 2006
Why Jackie Worthington chose Dun
Having stayed with friends in the area previously, we enjoyed the quiet ambiance of the area. Dun is a small village but an ideal base from which to explore. The proximity to the mountains for skiing was definitely a draw and the summers are fabulous. We have been on several wine tasting trips, some very close and some further afield, like Minervois and Corbiere. There are some great restaurants to try.
What makes this House unique
You will love the tranquility and peaceful atmosphere. The house is light and airy and each floor has its own sitting room, so if you want to be alone, you can be.

Great property and very peaceful surroundings.
Great property, lovely owners. Had everything we needed. In a lovely rural location.
I don't think I ever did get round to giving this property a review at the time but we were a group of 13 made up of 4 different families with children aged from 4 to 16. This whole house was spacious and had one of the best equipped kitchen of any house we have rented for a holiday (and there have been many). The outside space was ideal for sunbathing, swimming, resting in the shade and eating outdoors. There are plenty of things to do in the area from shopping, to water sports; from sightseeing at one of the many castles to taking a trip into the mountains on a cable car. The owners were great - offering advice when it was needed but still giving you complete privacy. The house retains lots of French character and has all the facilities you need for a fantastic holiday.
Oonagh, what a fantastic review.
Thank you so much.

The drive from Calais is 1000km and with a early start, is possible in one day.
The beautiful bastide town of Mirepoix is 10km.and has many shops, cafes and restaurants. The market on Monday mornings is well worth a visit.

There is a castle at Foix, 30km south-west and caves with pre-historic wall paintings at Tarascon, 15km south of Foix.
There are some delightful walks locally and along the canal du midi which is a 40 minute drive north of Dun. There is a riding stable 2 km.from the house which allows a much more extensive exploration of the counrtyside.
The whole region called Cathar country, due to the religious sect who used to inhabit the area. There are a large number of ruined cathar castles, built precariously on the tops of mountains and ridges. Montsegur, Queribus, Peyrepertuse, and Aguilar are just a selection, but definitely worth a visit. Mirepoix has a lovely town square surrounded by shops, bars and restaurants to suit most tastes.
It is a delightful place to sit and watch the world go by. There is, more often than not, some sort of fete occurring at the weekends and the Monday morning market must not be missed. There are several banks and ATMs, a chemist and a number of local pottery shops. For a special occasion, the Relais Royal, just off the main square, has a splendid restaurant.
Tarascon is the town to head to see the cave painting interest. There are several grottoes from which to choose.
Ax-les-Thermes is a quaint spa town, on the road to Andorra, from which you can take the cable car up to the mountains. Great walks and views and places to eat and drink.
According to one of our guests, this area has some of the best rock-climbing areas in the country. Other activities available locally are canoeing, kayaking,white-water rafting and bungee jumping.
There are several zoos, adventure parks and local lakes with beaches.
The cite d'espace ( Space centre) in Toulouse is well worth a visit, as is the city itself.
