Here in the beautiful Languedoc-Roussillon area of the Aude region of the South of France, there is so much to offer your group, whether you have in mind a family celebration or occasion, family or class reunions, a week of pampering, a HQ for walking, touring, cooking or painting holidays or, just a relaxing ‘get away from it all’ holiday with your friends and family and pets. With secure outside entertainment space as generous as the manor house, incorporating secluded gardens, with hammocks and plenty of seating, a large covered open-barn summer kitchen, BBQ and large dining area, hot tub, heated swimming pool and many games – there will be plenty of opportunity to enjoy individual peace and quiet, fun for children (ages 0-80!), as well as being able to create a party atmosphere when you want to.
The house is situated between the Black Mountains, to the North, where there are pine forests, and mountain villages and Alpine houses, and then to the South are the Pyrenees, usually snow capped. There is also bike hire nearby, so if you enjoy cycling, where it's possible to cycle along the Canal du Midi from the house. The quaint town of Trebes is a good place to cycle to, as they have a whole host of good restaurants and bars - but it's always harder to cycle back!
The mediterranean coast is about 40 mins, and there are some great places to visit such as Gruissan/Sete - two lovely fishing port and old towns, and Collioure - about an hour away, an artist village, perched on a hill side, tumbling down to the coast. Barcelona, is also about 3 hours drive from the house.
Aude is steeped with history and there is La Cité of Carcassonne to visit nearby (about 10 mins by car), Lastours, 7 Cathar Castles perched up high on the hillside, with the award winning restaurant, Le Puits de Tresor. There is an abundance of Medieval villages such as the beautiful city of Mirepoix, with Monstegur located nearby - the last Cathar strong holding, with its amazing views. It can also be enjoyable to go up in a sky lift to the top of the Pyrenees at any time of year as the views can be spectacular.
There are also two renowned caves to visit, Grotte de Limousis and Cabresprine.
If you are a bit of a foody you won't be disappointed as there are some fantastic local restaurants - La Bergerie just 10 mins by car in the Village of Aragon, La Barbacane in the Castle, Epicurie, 5 minutes by car, the list is endless. We can provide a more detailed list.
Rennes les Bains - a thermal spring, which has a great walk around the village, and you could combine a trip there to Rennes la Chateau - perched high up on a hill - Dan Brown's, Da Vinci Code, was said to have been inspired by the village, a great mystery where they think the priest found some hidden treasure, as he suddenly came into great wealth, and it is said that he left a secret code with clues to where he has hidden the rest, the views are stunning, as they reach out over the foothills of the Pyrenees.
The house is based in between several different wine regions; Villegailhenc is in the Cabardes region, and then a short drive you have the Minervois region (our favourite), then the Corbieres region lies to the south of Carcassonne, and throughout the region there are quite a few others to choose from, and you will be able to do wine tasting, if you wish.
There are some great local markets including Carcassonne market each Saturday, soak up the buzz of the market from one of the many bars located around the main square where you can enjoy having fresh sea food tapas, a drink or a meal.
Aude is one of the most diverse regions in France, it is also very rustic, and it has remained largely unspoilt by the modern world. Visitors will be able to enjoy an authentic French experience by visiting this area you can no longer enjoy in many of the more internationally known resorts.
