About Graham Hewitt
My wife, Mary and myself, Graham Hewitt, have a business in Leicestershire. We also live in Leicestershire and visit the house in Cordes-sur-Ciel, France as often as we can. We have been to France many times and visited many areas of France.
Graham Hewitt purchased this Farmhouse in 2003
Why Graham Hewitt chose Les Cabannes
We purchased the house in 2003 because we loved the area and wanted somewhere to stay for holidays and, after we retire, for extended visits. We attended several French Property exhibitions in the UK as well as continuing to visit and tour France to decide which would be the best area for us to purchase our home in France. We wanted somewhere far enough south to make a difference in the weather; rural but within walking distance of a village with a few shops and restaurants; not too far to travel to a town with more facilities and above all we wanted it to be within about an hour from an airport so that we would be able to fly there for visits from the UK when we didn't have the time off of work to drive there. After much searching we were lucky to come across the house we wanted. Whilst at a French property exhibition in the UK we came across an estate agent called Charles Smallwood who had moved to France many years previously to set up an estate agent business in St Antonin, not far from Cordes-sur-Ciel. We liked what they had to offer and decided to go over to their offices in France to look at some properties. We had great fun on that trip as Charles had arranged for us to stay for a few days at a nearby Chambre dote. The place was idyllic and everyone else that was staying there was also looking to buy their little bit of French paradise on varying budgets. The first day we were shown around properties in the area. There were some interesting ones but none ticked all our boxes. The next day we continued to look through the estate agents catalogue of properties and visited a few but still no luck. We went off for lunch on that second day arranging to return to the agents afterwards. We returned after lunch and were beginning to think that we would be returning to the UK empty handed. Then Charles came into the office and said he'd just surveyed a place that would be perfect for us. We were the first to see it. He was right. We loved it, and still do.
What makes this Farmhouse unique
The area that the house is in is known as the Tarn region's golden triangle between Cordes-sur-Ciel, Albi and Gaillac. Cordes is almost two villages in one. There is the pretty modern day French village with a nice range of shops etc but there are a couple of roads that lead off the village up to the medieval bastide town of Cordes-sur-Ciel. This has been well preserved and is not just a museum piece but a place where people live and work in the historic houses and shops/businesses. There are many artists and pottery makers and artisans, several restaurants and the view from the top is amazing. Can you spot our house, called Scaldis? There is a little road train for people who don't want to walk up. The house is nice and private in a quiet location and has a lovely private pool and extensive patio terrace.

It’s a great place in a beautiful setting
What a great location. We had a lovely time here sitting by the pool, eating on the terrace and exploring local markets and vineyards. Only one small suggestion- if you cut down 2 or 3 trees on the drive the view of Cordes in the evening would be spectacular!
Thank you Alex for your great review. I'm so glad that you enjoyed your stay at Scaldis and your holiday. My wife and I always enjoy the tranquillity when we are there.
Very private and peaceful location.
Comfortable house set in lovely location close to Cordes which is worth exploring. House has low ceilings upstairs and would benefit from a little updating. The house is well equipped for families including netflix. It was lovely to watch the stars at night and you can just see Cordes lit up through the trees. The pool is lovely and clean though may not be ideal for very little children due to a short drop at one side of the pool. Graham was very pleasant to deal with and the booking was very easy. A good choice to recharge your batteries!
I'm glad that you enjoyed your stay. You are correct in saying that the pool is not suitable for very little children. It states in our information on the website:
"The open nature of the pool area makes this property unsuitable for children under 6."
Redecoration work is already planned for the closed season.
Another great holiday
We really enjoyed our holiday here last year and returning this year was an excellent move. The house and pool is perfect for us and the surrounding area is so beautiful that we feel we will keep returning year after year.
Thanks Steve, for your lovely comments. It's always great to receive returning guests. I'm really glad that you enjoyed your stay and had a nice holiday.
Really enjoyed our stay at Scaldis - totally relaxing and so much to see in the area and many, many wonderful restaurants especially Le Moulin de Varen.
Thanks Maggie for your lovely review. So glad that you enjoyed your stay. You would be welcome to return at any time in the future.
Wonderful stay in beautiful private location
We had a wonderful stay at Scaldis, a beautiful house with private pool in lovely countryside. It is incredibly peaceful and you feel alone with the natural world.
Despite the peace and quiet, Cordes sur Ciel, a lovely hilltop town, is only 5 minutes drive away and you can easily have a day out in the small city of Albi or even reach Toulouse in just over an hour.
Owner Graham was extremely helpful and efficient and took care of any queries for us.
Would definitely recommend if you love beautiful scenery, nature and privacy.
Thanks Stephen for your great review. I'm glad that you enjoyed your stay.
When we were looking for a holiday home to buy in France, we had certain criteria.
1) Far enough South to make a difference in the weather.
2) Within an hour's drive of an airport.
3) Near to a village or small town with restaurants and shops, but with privacy.
4) Enough land for a swimming pool.
5) Good views in a pretty area.
6) House preferably stone built.
It was surprising how few properties/areas matched up to our requirements. In the end, just as we were thinking that we would never find the right place, we just happened to be in the right place at the right time. We were in an estate agents office in St Antonin-Noble-Val and the owner of the business came back from viewing a property called Scaldis at Cordes-sur-Ciel. We went out to view it the next day and knew straight away that it was the one for us. It hadn't even been put on the market. Just lucky!
Beautiful quiet location, but not too remote
The house is very comfortable with lovely views, extremely quiet. But it's close enough to Cordes to pop in for breakfast croissants, albeit by car, and there are so many wonderful places to visit. We had a wonderful week, highly recommended.
Thanks Lucy for your lovely review. We looked for a long time to find the right house and we believe we've found it. I'm really glad that you enjoyed your stay. You'd be most welcome to return at any future date.
Both the Atlantic coast and the Mediterranean are a half day drive away. Biarritz and St Jean de Luz are particularly nice on the Atlantic Coast as is Sete and Narbonne on the Mediterranean.
Toulouse airport to the south and Rodez to the North East are both approx 1 hour and a quarters drive. Since the completion of the A20 autoroute the ferry ports of northern France are within easy reach.
The village centre of Cordes is within walking distance. The city of Albi is 20-25 minutes drive as is the town of Gaillac. Gaillac is the local wine area.
The road from Cordes to Gaillac is a driveway through many, many vineyards where tastings and purchases are readily available. Cordes has a full range of shops including banks, Supermarkets, newsagent, Cafes/bar, restaurants, tourist info, bakeries, Chemists etc. Canoes are available for hire at nearby St Antonin.
