Chalet du Doron is situated in the picturesque mountain village Bettaix, away from all the hustle and bustle. It is the highest non-purpose built village in the French Alps at 1650m. The new chairlift, costructed 2015, take you straight up into France's biggest skiing area, Les Trois Vallees. The lift is 300 meters from the chalet, a 5 min walk along a flat road alongside the river.

The entrance floor has an open plan living/kitchen/dining area with high ceilings and exposed beams and also a master bedroom with an en-suite bathroom and another toilet in the entrance hall. On the second floor there are a mezzanine with a desk and "den", 2 more bedrooms with sloping ceilings, exposed beams and a family bathroom. There are plenty of wardrobes in the master bedroom and entrance hall, the two bedrooms upstairs have several chest of drawers and bed boxes, there is plenty of room for all that bulky ski wear. The total living space is 120 m3 plus another 15 m3 with low ceiling height.

There is a lift from the basement garage to the apartment. From the big sunny south and west facing balcony you can hear the Doron river that flows through the village. Fantastic mountain views from all the windows.

There is a ski shop in the village which also sells newly baked bread in the mornings and a 3 star Michelin restaurant 10 min drive away.

We are a Swedish family, with three adult children, that has lived in London for 20 years. We recently moved back to our native Stockholm in Sweden. We have had many fantastic family holidays in our chalet, and we try to spend as much time as we can here. We only let the apartment a few weeks every year, and some years we don't let it at all. This is our home away from home, so our chalet is well equipped with all the necessities for a cosy alpine getaway.

Why Eva Blom chose Le Bettaix

We discovered the village after having rented a number of houses in the Three Valleys area. We immediately fell in love with the historic stone houses, the swirling river, the magnificent view, and decided to buy the apartment off plan on a sunny January day in 2007. It was ready a year later, but the ski lift, which was supposed to be constructed shortly after our property was built, took another nine years to appear! Thankfully it has finally been built, and it whisks skiers and snowboarders up the mountain and into the heart of the Three Valley system with considerable speed. An elevator will take you to the front door of the penthouse, which occupies the third and fourth floors. The secluded feel of the apartment offers a private setting, allowing you to soak up the fantastic view offered from our balcony as you listen to the sounds of the river below.

What makes this apartment unique

As one of the largest ski systems in the world, the Three Valleys system offers endless skiing opportunities. There is always a new restaurant or slope to try out. The system caters to all skill levels, and you will never get stuck on the top of a terrifying black run, which was a relief when we came here with our children for the first time a few years ago. However now they happily throw themselves down black pistes, while my husband and I opt for the easy way down to the nearest restaurant.

Notes on accommodation: Bettaix is situated in the Val Thorens Valley, between Saint Martin de Belleville and Les Menuires. Supermarkets, a butchers, a bakery, a bank and restaurants can be found in Saint Martin de Belleville (15 min drive) or in Les Menuires (10 min drive). In Bettaix there is a ski shop where you can buy fresh bread too. Appartment is in total 127 m2, and is the penthouse on the third floor. It offers a spacious, very cosy living /kitchen/dining area with bookshelves filled with books, dvd's and lots of family games. The lighting is ambient, there are no 100w bulbs. Like a home from home, cushions, throws, candleholders. There is underfloor heating in the whole apartment, and all bedrooms have either wardrobes or chests of drawers. Not suitable for children under seven years. Le Bettaix is a farming village, with its traditions in tact. The locals keep cattle, goats, hens and hunting dogs nearby which can sometimes be heard throughout the village, giving it a rural touch. Outside: One east facing balcony looking out on the mountain. One partly covered L-shaped balcony facing south and west with amazing views over the village, Mt Carron, La Masse and beyond. Outdoor wooden table and chairs are available weather permitting. Sun on the balcony all day. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Apartment cleaned after departure, towels, linen and electricity included in the price, further maid service can be organised for an extra fee. Other: Ski locker on level 0, a dedicated parking space in garage below the apartment for one car, lift from garage to apartment which is situated on level three.

Penthouse in Bettaix - a great family chalet

A well appointed chalet in the lovely quiet village of Bettaix ideally situated close to a lift for connections across the 3 vallees and also near to ski hire shop which in addition supply bread every morning for collection - perfect !

The best thing was that the moment we entered the chalet it felt like a proper home rather than a characterless rental. The bedrooms and sitting room were warm and cosy. The carparking/ski locker and lift from both right up to the front door made all the usual dramas of pre and apres ski all the more easy.

All in all an ideal family chalet and little did we realise that 6 days of solid sunshine beating down over a very recent big snowfall had also been laid on for us at no extra expense !!

Would definitely go again.

Substantial, comfortable family apartment

Our family of five spent a great 8 days in Le Bettaix in March 2016. We arrived just after midnight and the apartment felt warm and inviting. It is much larger than most Alpine apartments with space for everyone to relax, and it is very solidly built, the fittings are high quality and it felt like a home from home. The chairlift is 10 minutes walk, but we lazily drove down most days (there is free parking) and would pop up to Les Menuires to go to the shops (and to a variety of restaurants up and down the mountain).

This is a lovely apartment, decorated with style, and it is a great base for a super ski holiday.

Travel:

By plane - Flights to Geneve Airport (145km), Grenoble Airport(185km) and Lyon Airport (185km), rent a car, transfer time from airport 2.5 - 3 hours, take A43 towards Albertville, dual carriage way to Moutiers, take exit 40 towards St Martin de Belleville and Val Thorens and then 30 min drive on mountain rd to Le Bettaix.

By car: 9-10 hours drive from the French side of the Channel tunnel (approx 900km).

By train: Eurostar Ski-train from London to Moutiers 8-10 hours.

Distances:

St Martin de Belleville 4km. Les Menuires 2km. Val Thorens 6km.

Further Details:

Supermarkets, butcher, bakery, banks, pharmacie etc can be found in St Martin de Belleville (15 min drive) and Les Menuires (10 min drive). 2 star Michelin star restaurant La Boite in nearby village Saint Marcel (5 min drive).
