About Caroline West
Hello I am Caroline and I live with Keith my partner, I loved the location of the cottage and the history of the original buildings (info at cottage). Having had many cottage holidays ourselves, both in UK and abroad, I spent a lot of time trying to create the ideal place to relax and have fun, I wanted to make sure that it would be as I would expect - a place to chill, or to have adventures with either family or friends. I was adamant we should have very comfortable beds the cottage has been let since 2006, and if the comments from our guests are anything to go by I have succeeded. It is the perfect place to appreciate Britain's scenery at its best; our repeat bookings show me we are doing something right; so come visit my favourite place, kick off your shoes, grab a glass of wine & take in the view, enjoy.
Caroline West purchased this Cottage in 2005
Why Caroline West chose Mitcheldean
The property was bought for its location, history and the stunning views. It is in an 'area of outstanding natural beauty' which means the land cannot be built upon, set in an elevated position on the edge of the 'Royal Forest of Dean' it nestles in a hillside over looking the Severn valley, it is perfect. Having travelled extensively I strongly believe that Britain has the best scenery in the world and this area has some of the very best. It is a 1830's detached cottage with no near neighbours to mention, but the friendly village of Mitcheldean is only 0.5miles down the road, the 'White Horse' pub is wonderful and Sandra, Brian and Dan are so welcoming,as are the locals, so if you fancy a old fashioned singsong or a good 'chinwag' in a typical village pub, its the place to go.
What makes this Cottage unique
There are so many benefits to this property I cannot name them all, so here are a few:- the cottage is literally on the doorstep of the Forest of Dean (across the road) where the walks are simply breathtaking, plenty of quaint villages within 1 – 5 mile radius, Monmouth, Chepstow and Cardiff are 15, 20, 45 minutes away (Wales), & Ross on Wye, Hereford, Gloucester, Bristol (England) 15,20,20,45 minutes in the other direction. Lovely golf courses close to hand as well as horse riding, Llama trekking and adventure parks, so much for children from toddlers to teenagers its impossible to name them all as the list goes on and on, plus great many eating places and wonderful pubs for the grown ups. You can have a chilled break or adventures every day, the choice is yours.

Lovely cottage with superb views great for a get away in the Forest of Dean.
The cottage was in a lovely location close to the village and the views were superb. It has a well stocked kitchen with a dish washer and washing machine. Wi-Fi also works well. Only negative was the steep drive and very limited parking at the bottom. Can only drive out in the order you come down! Otherwise a really lovely place to stay.
Clean but needs a bit of TLC
Spacious house with a lovely garden, beautiful views. The house has everything you need, the only thing we couldn't find was a dustpan & brush, found a hoover though! Bathrooms were a bit of an issue. Taps in main bathroom were very hard to turn as they are fitted so close to the wall you can't grip them to turn. The shower rail in downstairs bedroom also came away from the wall on first use. We did inform the owner of this. Super king size bed upstairs very comfy although sheet desperately needs replacing as very bobbly, apparently it was almost new....downstairs bedroom a bit damp. Communication with owner was very prompt.
Thank you for your feedback, I will look at the points you have kindly made and rectify them.Hopefully you will visit us again soon.
convenient location with lovely views, very comfortable
What we really liked:
Welcome pack of provisions on arrival was a nice touch, great communication from the owner.
The accommodation was clean and tidy and spacious enough for four adults and an 8 year old.
Grandparents particularly appreciated the downstairs bedroom, they wouldn't have been able to manage the stairs.
The conservatory is massive and has gorgeous views. Particularly appreciated the air conditioning on one of the hotter days.
Lovely child and dog friendly garden.
Beds were really comfy.
Great base for exploring the Forest of Dean.
To be aware of:
The main road behind is really busy during the day with lots of big lorries, it bothered my mother-in-law but the rest of us got used to it.
The drive is very tricky even if you're a confident driver. Steep and bumpy at the top and the rest is very narrow to reverse down. Again, we got used to it but it wasn't ideal. If you're reasonably fit and don't mind walking up and down then park at the top if you can.
The info says there is a bbq available, but it wasn't really in a useable state so we just bought a couple of disposables.
None of the above things spoiled our stay, we had a lovely time here. Thank you very much.
Thank you for your comments David. I was unaware of the BBQ state so I will replace that as soon as possible.
We do tell our guests the drive is steep but there is (as you say) plenty of room at the top to park if needed.
We hope you will visit us again soon.
very dissapointing overall
We were looking forward to our stay in the cottage, but we encountered our first problem as we turned off the road into the so called drive,It was appalling, very steep and uneven surface, unable to reverse or turn around, so had to leave the car at the very top, so every time we went out we all had to walk on this very dangerous surface. As for the extremely busy road directly behind the cottage, it was very noisy and difficult to get onto from the cottage.
The cottage itself was very tired and needed a good clean. The cupboard under the sink was full of rubbish and dirty, so was the big cupboard in the hall that stored the hoover and lord knows what else. The ground floor bedroom had a disgusting cupboard in it where we were supposed to hang our clothes (not so likely) with a bad smell of sewers coming from it and the toilet was at the other end of the house. The dustbins at the top of the drive ready for the bin men were full of maggots and haden't been emptied for a while. It also states that the cottage has Wi fi, but that was not the case, we tried for 7 days without success, also the lights in the conservatory were very poor considering we had to use the table out there for eating and reading
Thank you for your feedback. I am really sorry you did not enjoy your stay. I am a little surprised by some of your comments as we have had nothing but good reviews/remarks on our cleanliness and how lovely the cottage is. I will definitely look into this. The cottage is always redecorated through completely at the end of the season and has been re-painted last week (7th Nov) All bedding and towels have been replaced as they are every year. The drive is steep which is stated in the directions, for more nervous drivers we do suggest to leave the car at the top, that is the nature of the position of the cottage and the lovely views. The Wi-fi is sometimes fickle. again the cottage is in the countryside and that is out of our control.
I hope I have answered your review and thank you once again for the feedback

Mitcheldean is only half a mile away. It is a typical Cotswold village and has a Coop, post office, butchers and fruit and veg shop. The local pub, 'The White Horse' has been described in our visitors book as the "most friendly pub in the world...". There is also a Chinese and fish and chip takeaway in the village.
Cinderforrd, a typical Welsh mining village, is 3 miles away and has numerous shops, banks plus a large Lidl and Co-op supermarket. There are many various takeaways and a few good Restaurants and an old fashioned friendly Cinema, where you get shown to your seat by usherettes.
Plenty of villages and local traditional pubs are within a 5 mile radius of the cottage and many fabulous restaurants. All information about the surrounding area and places to eat are kept in a book at the cottage along with taxi numbers and maps. Our guests regularly update the visitors book when they find a hidden treasure and we would encourage you to do the same.
