About the property

Holiday House in Ballycotton Bay, County Cork, Ireland - Idyllic Quiet Location with Stunning Sea Views

Nestling in a unique bayside setting at the end of a quiet lane where it meets the sea, 40 mins from Cork city and its airport, Beachside Cottage has 2 bedrooms and in DECEMBER 2014, has just been upgraded with new laminate flooring to the bedrooms, new bed in the master bedroom, and 19th Century antique French encaustic tiling laid to the sun lounge and bathroom floors. It features a large old stone working fireplace in the lounge and a spacious kitchen/dining room overlooking the sea. The sun lounge provides extra seating and stunning sea views. A small rear courtyard has steps up to a raised garden with amazing views of the bay and a further small walled front garden leads to a slipway to the beach. Enjoy endless hours swimming, rock-pooling, exploring the caves, picnicking, beach barbecuing and sunbathing. Sea bass is fished from here and the cliff walk from the cottage to Ballycotton is breathtaking. A perfect place to enjoy Ireland's unspoilt beauty. There is a Post Office and grocer in Ballycotton, 5 mins by car, with several traditional pubs, one of which has regular live music, and restaurants. There is a wider range of shops in Cloyne, 7 miles away.

About Lina Wheeler

We live in sunny France restoring our old barn tucked away unobtrusively next door to our farmhouse. After years of French family holidays searching for suitable gites we aimed to one day have our own French haven suiting everyone's individual needs. We wanted comfortable good quality surroundings with a bit of "boutique" style to share and enjoy. In 2006 we found our special French home set in beautiful Vendee parklands, completing the farmhouse refurbishment in 2008. Then in 2009 we fell for and updated a little 200 year-old 2 bedroom cottage yards from the beach in S.Ireland. Both are regularly tested by critical family/friends. We feel if they're happy our guests will be too and so far our testimonials bear this out. We just feel lucky to get to enjoy them both.

Lina Wheeler purchased this cottage in 2009

Why Lina Wheeler chose Ballycotton

Simon and I had been visiting different areas of Ireland for over 10 years and had fallen in love with its scenery and its people. We both adore the sea and the cottage's location on the Irish Riviera is incredible with the almost private little beach virtually an extension to the garden and superb constantly distracting sea views all around. Cork, voted one of Lonely Planet's top 10 Cities of the World 2010 with its airport and its ferry route to Swansea is 40 minutes drive, Rosslare ferry to Pembroke 3 hours drive. The coast is warmed by The Gulf Stream, the neighbours are welcoming and friendly and the cottage is surprisingly sound and cosy despite its 200 years. The surrounding area is totally unspoilt and the beach tempting - just to sit looking out to sea dissolves all your worries!

What makes this cottage unique

The beach is safe for swimming, surfing, fishing and boat launching. There's also a stunning cliff walk to the village and its bars, restaurant and Post Office. The famous Ballymaloe Cookery School is close by offering classes from 2 hours upwards. A perfect weekend would start with a Guinness in The Inn at the Harbour in Ballycotton, followed by a meal there in the fabulous restaurant or some live music in The Blackbird. Next day a visit to Cork to explore the city and go to the covered foodmarket to stock up on local delicacies or to the arboretum and gardens at Fota. On Sunday off to the Post Office for home-made scones, cakes and jam and the Sunday newspapers, a walk on the beach or a swim and a beach barbecue. Then drift off to sleep to the lapping of the waves on the beach.

Perfect holiday, Lovely cottage, beautiful place.

  • 5 of 5

Beachside Cottage is a magical place. This beautiful, well-kept little house offers everything you might need. It is located so close to the sea you can see and hear it when sipping coffee on the porch. I can recommend it to everybody interested in having a peaceful holiday with climate. My family and I loved it. And fresh flowers waiting for us on the table in the living room were just lovely.

So good to wake up to the sound of the sea. Loved to sit in the sun lounge with a cup of tea (or glass of wine in the evening!) and look out to sea.

The cottage was well equipped and very comfortable. The owners couldn't have been more helpful and attentive. The flowers left in the sitting room were a lovely, thoughtful welcoming touch. Thank you.

Quiet Cottage in a beautiful setting.

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed in this lovely cottage for our first trip to Ireland. It was the perfect size for the two of us, but would also be good for two couples or a couple with kids. The cottage was well equipped with everything we needed from kitchen supplies, a comfortable living room, and my favorite, the sun porch. I loved sitting out there in the morning drinking coffee and listening to the ocean. It is in a nice quiet country location and the end of the Ballycotton cliff walk is right outside the door. My husband and I took a morning hike on the trail. What beautiful unparalleled views. This was the cottage I had in mind when I was planning my dream Ireland vacation many years ago. Lina and Simon are very responsive and made the whole process of renting a vacation home very easy. I would highly recommend this rental if you are looking to immerse yourself in the Ireland countryside. Ballycotton, Midleton, and other towns are not far from the house. It is also centrally located to everything that Cork and Cork county has to offer. We can’t wait to return. Thank you Lina and Simon for making our dream vacation and our 25th anniversary a wonderful memorable experience. Krystle and Del

This is a perfect location for a peaceful and relaxing vacation!

  • 5 of 5

This was my first visit to Ireland, and it was, by far, the best vacation ever! Lina and Simon are gracious hosts, responsive to any and all questions. The cottage is in a perfect location for rest, relaxation, and access to local color. It was neat, clean, and well equipped for a four-week stay. The cliff walk and the beach were just steps away from the front door. So many positives and no negatives! Thank you, Lina and Simon!

Further Details:

The local Post Office and grocer in Ballycotton sells superb home-made cakes, bread and scones. Pier 26 Restaurant adjoined to The Inn by the Harbour serves good food, having won 3 awards during 2014, and there is usually fresh Ballycotton fish on the menu. From the Inn by the Harbour tickets can be purchased for boat trips out to the lighthouse, weather permitting, children can obtain fishing lines for pier fishing and, for more aspiring fishermen, sea fishing trips can be booked. Ballymaloe House (less than 5 miles away) has a cafe serving delicious food together with a shop selling Irish crafts. There is also a branch of the Kilkenny Design Centre at nearby Shanagarry (on the way to the vast Garryvoe beach 3kms away from the cottage) where local pottery, jewellery, Orla Kiely products, clothes, toys, hand-made Irish crafts and handbags are sold with a coffee shop and a French chef serving good value food. Midleton farmer's market on Saturday mornings is well worth visiting and Farmgate, a restaurant in the middle of Midleton, is a must for either lunch or dinner. Jameson's Whisky Distillery has tours and tastings as well as a large selection of whiskies available to purchase. Cobh on the outskirts of Cork from where the Titanic left on its doomed voyage, is worth visiting. Cork City offers excellent shopping, galleries, an opera house, cinemas and restaurants (family restaurant, Farmgate, situated above The English Market, a large covered pretty Victorian food market selling the best of Irish produce in the centre of Cork, was awarded the maximum 5 stars by Sunday Times Reviewer AA Gill in December 2014). Just outside Cork City, Fota has a Golf Club, Fota House with its restored Georgian mansion, gardens and arboretum and Fota Wildlife Park. Kinsale is a very attractive colourful town with a marina, galleries, a variety of unusual shops and of course many very good quality restaurants.
