About Katie Gander
Our family has had connections with the French Pyrenees since the 1970s when my grandfather bought a plot of land in the hope of building a holiday home. This took rather longer than predicted! Over the years though we have grown to love this corner of France and are happy to share the knowledge and experience we have to make your holiday as enjoyable as possible. We live on the south coast of the UK and regularly go over to France to enjoy the sunshine and amazing scenery. With children ranging in age from 3-14 we have tested out the suitability of the region for families and can happily report that there is plenty to keep all ages happy including outdoor adventure parks, old castles to explore and lovely sandy beaches combined with great food and wine there is lots for adults too!
Katie Gander purchased this Villa in 2005
Why Katie Gander chose Fuilla
We purchased the land in Fuilla where the house is back in 2005, the location is stunning in a quiet village with amazing views of Mount Canigou. We were lucky to then be given the planning permission to build the house and a busy few years ensued with all the different aspects of managing such a big project whilst living in the UK. The house was completed in 2009. Fuilla is now part of the Catalan Pyrenees Natural Park which is recognised as being an area of outstanding natural beauty. If you enjoy French food you will not be disappointed staying here, There are many restaurants in nearby villages including a very good one just up the road in Sahorre.
What makes this Villa unique
We really enjoy being away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life when at Fuilla. It is peaceful and in a sheltered valley so it often catches the sunshine when nearby Prades is cloudy. With amazing views of Mount Canigou you can sit back and enjoy this or plan your route for walking up it if you want to be more active. It is very often warm and sunny and having a swimming pool makes it the perfect spot to relax with children. They are often happy to stay at the house and swim but it it great to know there is such a good variety of things to do very nearby. Villefranche is just down the road and is a World Heritage Unesco Site, it is a very well preserved Cathar medieval fortified town - its a bit like a miniature Carcasonne!

Fantastic holiday at the Villa Maple Rouge. Family of 4 with 2 young kids. Villa was perfect great location with wonderful views, facilities really good, pool good size and well maintained, everything you need for cooking and a lovely barbecue area with plenty of outdoor seating. Would highly recommend and hopefully will go back one day. Katie the owner is very responsive to e mails and always helpful in answering any questions or queries. A very memorable holiday.
Thank you for your review, great to hear you enjoyed your holiday and Villa Maple Rouge gave you a wonderful base for relaxing in and exploring this beautiful region of France. We look forward to welcoming you again in the future.
Great area great house and lovely weather
We enjoyed staying in the house, perfect for a large group like us.
Lovely house in lovely area
The villa was superb for a large family group, with lots of space and it is very well equipped. Pool was lovely. There is good walking in the area and the local tourist office was extremely helpful in finding them. Villefranche is 5 mins away by car - great place to go early evening after the coach tours have left! The Plage des Escoumes on the lake at Vinca , about half an hour away ,is fine if you have kids . Collioure , on the coast just over an hour away, is well worth a visit - good beach and great restaurants overlooking the harbour, and easy parking if you use the upper car parks and free shuttle bus.
I would highly recommend Villa Maple Rouge.
Thank you for your review Peter, great to hear that the villa provided you with a good base for you and your family to explore this beautiful region of France.
Spacious, clean, amazing views & homely vibe
A great place to relax, socialise and and enjoy the beautiful countryside. The kitchen dinning area is an amazing communal area where you can cook whilst remaining amidst the party. The bed room was comfy with the lovely French shutters you can throw open in the morning to drink in the beautiful views and mountain air. The cosy lounge has a wood burner and enough space to spread out after over indulging all things French. There are so many activities for adrenaline junkies, with winter sports, mountain biking, hiking, climbing etc and there is so much more, especially if like me you are not an adrenaline junkie. There are many historic towns & villages in easy reach with markets, cafes and restaurants where you can enjoy eating and drinking to your hearts content. We had an amazing meal at El Taller Restaurant nearby where we enjoyed excellent value, friendly service and the best of contemporary French cooking. Also a short drive away is the St Thomas Les Bains natural hot spring baths, float in the beautiful outdoor pool whilst taking in the breath taking mountain scenery. (they are proper hot) Also due to some strange French rule blokes have to wear budgie smugglers. The coast is in easy reach for a lovely day trip (we explored Collioure, a picturesque town with a castle where Matisse did some great paintings. For a holiday with so much to do on your door step but beautiful enough to stay and enjoy all the home comforts, this is a great place to base your holiday in unspoilt France.
Beautiful scenery if you are looking for a quite location. Despite some hot wheater, the 500m elevation will always keep you cooled down with a light fresh breeze. The house is spacious and functional. Highly recommended if you don't mind being 45 min drive from the beach.
It is lovely to hear you enjoyed your stay at Villa Maple Rouge, it is indeed a beautiful and peaceful location. There is a beach 20 minutes away with water sports at the lake in Vinca, hope you are tempted to return next year to explore this lovely area of France some more.
villa Maple Rouge
Excellent property for our week long break with our grown-up family and Grandchild. The property was well maintained, clean well equipped and with beautiful views up the valley to Pic du Canigou, snow-capped still in late April. The service from the owner was fast and efficient and very helpful with odd extras like cots/stair gates. I would certainly recommend it to others.
The village of Fulla is small and peaceful and the locals very friendly, and there is a good range of restaurants in Villafranche de Conflent, a few minutes away by car, and good shops/supermarkets (we preferred Super U ) in Prades about 6km.
Not all local attractions were open in mid April - but there is pelnty to do. We had some great walking ( usually after using the car to gain a lot of height!) and an excellent day at the unusual Parc Animalier in Casteil and one on the beach.
Great to hear you enjoyed your stay - thank you for your review, we do listen to feedback and provide the little extras that will make your stay more enjoyable whenever possible. I hope we can welcome you back when more of the local attractions are open - sounds like a good reason to return to this lovely location to me!
Special interest holidays:
We provide up to 4 mountain bikes for your use as well as a bike maintenance station with tools and stand. This is a well known destination for french cyclists, the villa was used as a base for the Dijon french olympic sprinting cyclist team in 2011. With many off road marked routes you can get a different viewpoint of the Pyrenees. Please see our web-site for more information about cycling.
The walks in the area are many, varied and well marked, you can stroll around the village or take a hike following some of the most beautiful trails in France.
An excellent way to enjoy the mountains is to take a 4 x 4 trip up Mount Canigou and then either take the explorers trail around the refuge and have lunch at the restaurant, or to walk to the peak which is a 4 hour round trip. The views are amazing and the wildlife varied and interesting. There are also refuges with restaurants to stay in if you want to take a couple of days walking up there and need overnight accommodation.
It's a 50 minutes drive to the Mediterranean beaches including Argeles and the artists retreat at Colliure. Argeles is a large commercial beach, if you would like something quieter there are many to choose from such as Le Racou, a pretty seaside village with a good sandy beach. There is a freshwater swimming lake and beach at Vinca - just 20 mins drive, here there are water sports on offer. White water rafting and canyoning are also available in the area.
Perpignan Airport - 28 miles. Barcelona-Girona Airport - 85 miles. Carcasonne Airport - 75 miles. Toulouse Airport - 165 miles. Car is recommended. There is a train station just 2 miles away at Villefranche where you can travel on the picturesque little yellow train up into the mountains or go to Perpignan - the capital of the Pyrenees Oriental.
There are many restaurants in the surrounding villages. The nearest grocery shops are 2 miles away in the adjacent villages of Villefranche-de-Conflent and Sahorre. Prades is 10 mins drive away and is a busy market town, with all the amenities and facilities you would require, including supermarkets, pharmacies, banks and a hospital.
Fuilla is a charming village set in a sheltered valley situated in the foothills of the Pyrenees. It is an ideal centre for holidaymakers all year round as the village enjoys a wonderful climate, with an average of 300 days of sunshine each year. Shopping from Fuilla is easy, with a wide range of amenities available in nearby Villefranche and Prades, where you will find a variety of Supermarkets, cafes, bars and restaurants. In Prades there is a large market every Tuesday and a smaller produce market on Saturday mornings.
For touring the area Fuilla is ideally situated and offers an excellent base. Just a few sites of interest within easy driving distance are listed below: Villefranche de Conflent, a fine example of a medieval walled town (5 minutes drive). St Martin du Canigou, 9th century abbey perched impressively high on the hillside with fantastic scenery and walks. (10 minutes drive).
