About Angela Would
We are a family of four, we have 2 boys aged 20 and 24. We live in a cottage in the New Forest which we restored over 3 years and have subsequently extended. We both had careers but enjoyed restoring our home so much that we carried on developing in the UK and renting out properties. It is now our means of income and way of life. Normandy was a challenge but worth it. The chalet in Switzerland was bought as a result of repeatedly visiting the same village year after year and wanting to be independent of rentals. Collioure was again the result of loving an area and our later years when we may enjoy the mild climate and some sunny weather... but we then bought another property with a pool 1 hour inland from Collioure..as you will have seen above. In the meantime we want others to share our homes in our absence.
Angela Would purchased this Cottage in 1984
Why Angela Would chose Hyde
We bought the cottage as a derelict shell in 1984 - it was 2 small new forest cottages of cob, brick and slate. The house is in a great position to start walks/cycle from without the need to resort to a car. We are in a small village which is a ribbon development. There are horses, donkeys and ponies on the road outside and a wealth of other animals in the surroundings. We spent 3 years working on the house and have since extended the house and added a conservatory. The cottage is classed as a small dwelling, so no huge extensions for us, It has retained its cosy cottage charm and we have added a modern twists The house is 2 miles from Fordingbridge where there are all the shops and services you would expect from a small town. Larger facilities are in Salisbury - 12 miles, Southampton - 20 miles and Bournemouth - 16 miles.
What makes this Cottage unique
A car is required to access the property as we are in a rural area with no public transport as such - once there with supplies for your stay, a car is not really required. The cottage is perfectly based to start circular walks/cycle rides from. We never tire of walking from the cottage - there are pubs very close or at longer walking distances for pub lunches or summer evenings. This is a home from home - for real, we used to let the cottage out in school holidays, but now it is all year as we can fit our stays accordingly with our travels abroad. The house has everything you would expect and more. It is a cottage so expect low ceilings, small rooms, inglenook, wood burner, wifi, antiques, aga (winter only) but it has the luxuries of modern life-dishwasher, oil central heating, double glazing. It is a home so we have all our pictures, books, dvds ,talktalk tv, even a phone to use to call family in the UK or mobiles in the UK.
Cancelled bookings will not receive a refund.
Holiday 15 - 22 June 2019
Hi Angela thank you for letting us stay in your lovely home. What a lovely place to live, never seen so many donkeys, just loved them. Your pool was a real blessing and so warm.
Thank you for all the extra things you provided very much appreciated. The weather could have been a bit brighter but it didn’t matter because we had the pool and your cosy conservatory overlooking your beautiful nature garden.
Beds were very comfortable. Bed Linen spotlessly clean.
Thank you for your review, The baby donkeys are definitely a hit at this time of year. I am pleased you appreciated our home, the garden, the welcome pack and the swim spa which is maintained at the recommended setting - which is as you say lovely and warm.
Jane does a fantastic job at changeover and provides beautifully washed and ironed linen and I agree the beds are comfortable.
The cottage is a New Forest home and cottage garden which nature lovers all enjoy, particularly if they see the badger in the evening. Unfortunately the only thing out of our control is the weather! but the facilities at the cottage compensate for this
We had a great stay at the cottage and enjoyed the swim spa so much, if there is one thing to mention we would have liked a rail to help with safety in and out of the pool. Thank you for putting banners up wishing us a Happy Wedding Anniversay you helped to make a memorable holiday.
Character cottage in great location to explore the New Forest
Overall we had a lovely time. The cottage was ideally located within the New Forest on your doorstep and a very good pub too, just yards away!
The cottage has history and charm, our only negative point inside the cottage is that it is showing signs of wear and tear and a bit cluttered . It could do with a bit of tidying up for guests. That said, it's welcoming , comfortable and clean.
The master bedroom has a small but functional ensuite, we found the bed to be extremely comfortable.
The conservatory is a nice place to sit and read or listen to music and watch the birds in the pretty garden.
Outside, the garden is pretty and a typical cottage garden - though we would say needs a little more care and tidying as the rose bushes have become rather overgrown, which causes a hazard getting in and out of the car on the driveway. Same applies to the fish pond which is overgrown and an unusable bench beside it.
We come finally to the swimspa in the garden.
Simply fantastic, just the thing for rekaxing in after a long day out.
In summary , a lovely cottage in a great location. Just needs a little more attention to detail, and a tidy up in our opinion, accepting that it is if course too your 'home'.
Hence to 4 star rating and not 5.
The whole experience was fantastic, couldn’t have asked for more .
I am pleased you had a lovely time and your the twins had their first holiday with you and their parents. I hope you have returned home refreshed.
Thank you for taking the time to send the review
Had a great time, the swimming pool was perfect for both adults and children and we all had a lot of fun there. Location is great with pubs and walks nearby, would highly recommend and will hopefully be returning!
Pleased you had a great time, thank you for your kind comments
We had a super holiday here at February half term. The house is just as described, fully equipped and always warm with the Aga, the owner was very helpful before and during the stay. The swim spa is a tremendous bonus, especially for children, our granddaughter was in every day and the temperature was always 37C degrees. We would genuinely recommend this to anyone. It was quite amusing having donkeys by the gate and wandering around the crossroads
Thank you for your review. I am pleased you and your family had a great break. I cannot take credit for the donkeys, they are a part of life in the New Forest and it is very easy to take them as 'the norm' of living in this area.
The swim spa is great, the temperature can be reduced for those who want to take advantage of the jets and swim in the pool. So it can be both relaxing and 'healthy' depending on your requirements.
The Aga is great for the cooler months, although February this year has proved to be an early 'summer'....but I am not complaining!
The coast including Bournemouth, Christchurch are about 30 minutes away - obviously dependant on traffic conditions.
Southampton and Bournemouth airports are both about 30 minutes drive away. Train stations at Salisbury, Southampton and Bournemouth. A car is a must as there is no local public transport.
Fordingbridge is 2 miles away, Ringwood -6 miles, 12 miles from Salisbury, 20 miles from Southampton and 16 miles from Bournemouth. Too many places of interest to comprehensively list - but something for every taste, age and interest. Lots of tourist information is available at the cottage. We are near the borders of Hampshire, Dorset and Wiltshire
There is a a tea room come restaurant at Hyde - a short walk
Fordingbridge has a Co-op and Ringwood has a Waitrose and Sainsburys. There is a pub on the crossroads near our cottage which does food, called the Foresters as well as a pub about a mile away called the Royal Oak which also does food. For those seeking a restaurant the Three Lions has a very good reputation as does the Stables at Hyde. Fordingbridge and Ringwood both have banks/ATM.
Fordingbridge has a recreation ground bordering the Avon (great for feeding ducks). Fishing possible
There is an outside pool at Sandy Balls holiday camp at Godshill, a public swimming pool at Ringwood and a paddling pool at Fordingbridge, where there are also swings/slides/fishing in the Avon. There are several local stables and bikes can be rented at Sandy Balls.
