About Tony Hirst
Gina and I live in Anglesey with our much loved springer spaniel Basil. Close by we have our daughter, partner and three grandchildren whilst our other grandchild and mum and dad live in Cardiff. We bought Bron Meirion in 1999 and moved in for three months to renovate it when I became semi retired and we and our family love to use it ourselves when we get the chance.
Why Tony Hirst chose Caernarfon
We chose the Nantmor/Beddgelert area because we have always loved walking and it is just as beautiful as the lake district but much nearer. Nantmor has so many beautiful trees and of so many varieties that it is almost like a parkland in the hills and the beautiful Glaslyn pass is minutes walk away. It has its own mini climate, warmer and drier than the hills round about but within walking distance of some of the higher peaks such as Knicht and Moel Hebog. Add to this the proximity of the newly opened Welsh Highland Railway and its like heaven for me! If you are a beach person there are very pretty coves only 6 miles away at Borth y Guest and if you don't want to cook there are places to eat out in Beddgelert. The ideal place for a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life!
What makes this Cottage unique
Bron Meirion was an old blacksmiths forge and has thick stone built walls which make it cool in the summer but warm in the winter with the Rayburn and wood burning stove as well as radiators. Ideal for drying cloths if you get caught in the rain. The walking is spectacular whether its in valleys, on hills or mountains you can walk from the door in minutes. In summer the balcony affords picturesque views over Nantmor and there is a sheltered picnic table just beyond the parking area where up to three cars can be parked off road.

Lovely house in peaceful location. Ideal for 6 adults. Clean and comfy.
Long family weekend with 6 adults . House ideal for family meals and evening fun! Clean and comfy.
Great location in quiet lane. Nice setting for main bedroom but rest of rooms a bit dull.
Great location in quiet lane with ready access to Welsh Highland Railway and Sherpa bus service. Lovely walk along river into Beddgelert.
Nice setting for main bedroom with glass doors to balcony, but rest of the cottage has a rather dull feel.
Well equipped kitchen with good sized table for group to sit around, warmed by Rayburn. Clean.
We did not really need the radiators but it was a bit unclear whether you'd need to light the multi-fuel stove to supplement the Rayburn so worth checking if you're expecting a cold stay. The heating oil for the Rayburn seemed smelly on arrival but you tend to get used to that.
Electric shower over bath works well enough not to need to use the bath. But the bathroom is small and might be under strain if there was a full house!
Overall Bron Meirion met our needs and expectations well; we were after a practical base for a walking break where muddy footwear on re-entering isn't going to be hard to clean up after. Not a place for sitting in luxurious comfort gazing at glorious views from panoramic windows; you have to earn those by getting out. But that's exactly what we came to do.
Many thanks for your comments and glad you enjoyed your stay.
Sorry you found some rooms a bit dull but because it is a Cottage the windows tend to be smaller than a modern house and most people expect that. You have to go out onto the balcony to get the view. Most people appreciate the cosy feel.
I have left details about lighting the stove but perhaps it should be emphasised that it works in tandem with the Rayburn to operate the central heating.
Lovely old cottage
Beautiful location, great size cottage with everything required and additional parking
Lovely old Welsh cottage full of character and very comfortable.
Great cottage lovely time. Thanks
Thanks for taking the time to review Bron Meirion Cottage and your kind comments.
Please come and stay again soon.
One of the best self-catering properties I have stayed in: warm, comfortable, spacious and with everything required. The house has real character; a quiet retreat in a peaceful village which is well placed for exploring Snowdonia. My only suggestion would be to replace the see-through glass in the bathroom door!
Really glad you appreciated Bron Meirion and the walking you are able to do from the Cottage door. We want all our guests to feel comfortable and try to upgrade the cottage without spoiling the ambience.
As regards the bathroom door, the glass is frosted so it is only possible to see shadows. There are hooks on the door so it is possible to hang a towel to obscure vision. We use to have a blind but it tended to be left down making the landing dark.
I am most grateful for your comments and hope Bron Meirion will be at the top of your list of places to revisit.
Great cottage great location
We had a great time, cottage had everything we needed, clean and tidy - just wish I had someone to stoke the fire first thing in the morning. Friendly locals, our 7 year old joined them for Halloween. Location is fantastic - steam train and great walks virtually from the front door. The walk along the river from Nantmore to Beddgelert is stunning and great for the dog as no sheep. There was a mix up with the number of beds that were made up - but was quickly sorted out - thank you.
So nice to hear you all had a great time. It sounds as if you took full advantage of the extensive local walking and the closeness of the Welsh Highland Railway.
Do come again.
