This 1840's gem has been painstakingly renovated up to and beyond its former glory, making the perfect base from which to explore New Orleans. Sitting on the 2nd and 3rd floors above Magazine Street, you will feel at home in a tranquil oasis that belies the busy street below. The apartment has completely modern amenities throughout, which blend seamlessly with the grand scale and historic features of a bygone era. Take in the activity of Magazine Street from the generous balcony above. Wonderful living areas flow easily through the layout. A sumptuous Master Suite, including a laundry room off the hallway, awaits on the 2nd floor. Another 2+ bedrooms plus a great room provide a great surprise on the 3rd floor. Steal unobstructed glimpses of the gorgeous (and also newly renovated) church behind us through the rear-facing windows and you'll swear you're on a European holiday! Enjoy the best of all worlds during your stay at Maison de Violette!

About Melanie Fischmann
I'm an Interior Designer and my retail shop -- just across the street from this property -- features Mid Century Modern art, furniture and furnishings blended with more traditional touches. That is the style you will notice when you stay here, and I think it represents New Orleans quite well. It is the blending of new and old, near and far, that makes this city so special. In addition to decorating and styling homes, I love to cook, host, and travel with my family and friends.

Why Melanie Fischmann chose Lower Garden District
After several years operating a shop on this block of Magazine Street, I was keenly aware of how it draws in the community in ways other blocks don't. Ours is often the block where visitors begin their exploration of Magazine Street, and it's one of the last convenient blocks for locals to frequent before getting caught up in downtown traffic. There is always something interesting going on here, and I find myself having interesting and unexpected conversations all the time. So when the opportunity to buy a building on this block came about, I put a family partnership together to pursue it (that is my brother and his wife in the picture with my husband and me, and we own the property together). The name Maison De Violette pays tribute to my grandmother - a woman of amazing style and personality, just like her home city of New Orleans.
What makes this Apartment unique
Our side of the street on this block of Magazine was originally built in the late 1840s as overflow convent housing by the magnificent St. Alphonsus Church, which stands behind us. The church had the foresight to create retail shops on the ground floor, and apartments above. Our building was originally a bakery, and the original oven, tile floors, pressed tin ceilings and other features have all been preserved lovingly in our ground floor retail space, home to RHINO Galleries (a must-visit stop on any New Orleans shopping trip!). We love the history here. It's alive and celebrated, and it makes this a very unique location among the many special neighborhoods of New Orleans.

Hidden Gem in the Lower Garden District
We spent 5 nights at this lovely place over Thanksgiving weekend. We were so pleased to arrive and discover such a welcoming and comfortable space. The scale of the living areas are not only stunning, they also feature an easy flow - a great area for family and friends to gather. The living room spills out onto a private and spacious patio, overlooking the bustling shopping area on Magazine Street. The dining room easily accommodates eight for dinner while the kitchen is perfect for multiple cooks and helpers. Kitchen was well-stocked. We had a little trouble with the oven so recommend getting proper instructions prior to using. The master bedroom/bath is also on this floor but very private. The extra sleeping areas are up one floor and easily accommodate 5 - 7 people with two queen beds and 3 twin daybeds. Lots of room for air mattresses, if needed.
The owners were very responsive to any questions that we had and stopped by to meet us before we left on Sunday. Prior to our arrival, they were interested in helping us make our plans and left a lovely cake and bottle of wine to greet us!
We highly recommend this spot - a relaxing and enjoyable way to visit New Orleans! Even better, it offers the perfect spot for entertaining local friends and family!
The best home any one could possibly rent
This rental was without a doubt the nicest place I have ever rented from VRBO. The owners truly know how to accommodate their guests. Every detail, soap, towels, wine, bread, cleanliness, well appointed kitchen was focused on.
It was better than staying in a 4 star Hotel.
Beautiful property — really MADE our weekend in New Orleans!
This property is absolutely wonderful. My friends and I couldn't get over how beautiful and well-appointed the space is, and the location is absolutely ideal. It was such a lovely and tranquil spot to come back home to after being out and about in New Orleans — the big open kitchen and sunny patio in particular were some of our favorite places to collect and enjoy each other's company. Every detail of the place felt personal and Melanie was incredibly responsive and helpful pre- and post-trip. I just can't stress enough how integral having this property as home base was to making this girls weekend a memorable and exciting experience. We were truly blown away!
Amazing apartment and Great Location
The pictures do not do this place justice . It’s beautifully restored. The location on Magazine is perfect. You can walk to so many restaurants and shops. We spent much time watching over Magazine from the balcony. Melanie was super easy to work with and very responsive to questions and had great food and drink recommendations. The kids loved the loft area! The whole apartment is very spacious. We will stay here again!
Perfect in every sense!
Tom and Melanie's apartment is perfect in every sense. The home is beautifully decorated and very well appointed. The place is very spacious with high ceilings and large windows. The beds were extremely comfortable with nice linens. The bathrooms were great and we loved the balcony. We hosted Thanksgiving at the house and it was the perfect place to cook and entertain family. The location can't be beat. There are a number of great restaurants and fun shops within walking distance. We love Magazine Street. Tom and Melanie were the most gracious hosts I've ever dealt with. They went above and beyond to ensure that we enjoyed our stay. I will definitely come back to this home.
This home is perfect. Has all the finishing touches you could imagine! Very ‘Nola’ complete with a balcony, which we started our days and ended our evenings on. We will definitely recommend this beautiful place to everyone we know coming to stay in the city. Magazine Street is a fantastic location. Highly encourage! Gorgeous!!
Street parking is accessible on Magazine Street and on the two cross streets (St. Andrew and Josephine streets). Magazine is metered parking from 8am to 7pm and there is an app available to pay by phone. Parking on the street directly in front of our property is usually available at night and is free -- just remember to put money in the meter in the morning, or move the car to a side street.
Parking is free on the side streets, and it's usually easy to find a spot. You might have to drive around the 2 square blocks on all sides of the property, but you will almost always find something close by, where you can park all day and night for free.
