Beautiful restored Tuscan farmhouse with sole use of pool in National Park

Bedrooms 2
Space 828 sq. ft.
Property type villa
Minimum Stay 7 nights

About the property

Tuscan farmhouse, newly restored with sole use of 10m pool in National Park

The property is a fully restored traditional fifteenth century farmhouse set within a hectare of hazelnut forest and olive grove, away from traffic, although easy to reach by road. There is a parking for up to 3 cars. The garden is large which is ideal for families with children and the pool is enclosed with a gate.

This is the perfect place to unwind surrounded by vineyards, olive groves and chestnut forests and with fantastic views of the Apennines mountain range that forms part of the Parco del'Appennino and Orechiella Nature Reserve.

Garfagnana is located in the northern tip of Tuscany in the Lucca province and is approximately one hour drive from Pisa airport.

The farmhouse is situated less than a kilometre from the village of Vallico di Sotto which is in the commune of Fabbriche di Vallico in the Val di Turrite, a tributary to the Serchio river in the Garfagnana across from the city of Barga. The farmhouse is in the national park 'Parco Naturale delle Alpi Apuani' which covers the mountain range between the Garfagnana valley and the coast of the Riviera delle Versilia. As well as innumerable villages, the towns of Barga, Castelnuovo and Bagni di Lucca are nearby and the natural features of the Grotto di Vento (wind caves) the Orrido di Botri (gorge), Carrera marble and the Prato di Fiorito (Field of Flowers). The Tuscan cities of Lucca, Siena, Florence, Pistoia, and Pisa are within an easy drive as is the Versilian coast. There are activities in the area such as walking, pony trekking, canoeing and a visit to Pinnochio at Collodi. There is a wide choice of traditional reasonable priced Tuscan restaurants nearby.

TIPS - Eat your main meal at lunchtime, local trattorias will usually charge 10 Euro (£9) for a three-course lunch including wine, water and coffee (pranzo di lavoro). Or why not pack a picnic and try the range of breads, cheeses and cured meats. Drink at the cafe counter! Coffee and soft drinks taken standing up at the counter instead of at a table are half the cost. Train travel is still extremely good value. There are excellent connections from the local town to nearby Lucca, Pisa, Florence or the Cinque Terre on the coast. Good wine is available from a local wine merchant at excellent value for money. The Garfagnana region is famous for local produce such as pecorino cheese, farro, porcini mushrooms and polenta. There is a large supermarket in Gallicano and many local markets which sell clothes, flowers, pottery, hardware, carpets, shoes, leather goods and gifts and well as fruit, vegetables, meat and cheeses. Shops close between 1pm and 4pm and are open until around 7pm.

In general the climate in Tuscany is very mild with little difference between the different provinces. However the coast and valleys are hotter in summer than the hilly areas. Usually summers in Tuscany are hot with little or no rain. April and May are milder and rainier but there are still plenty of dry, sunny days. July and August are the hottest months. Spring can be one of the most rewarding times to visit, average temperatures are warm and comfortable. It can however be one of the wettest seasons but normally by May rain is rare and the days are longer with up to 10 hours of daylight. Summer in Tuscany is usually hot and sunny with pleasant evenings for 'al fresco' dining. Humidity levels can get high, especially in the cities. Throughout the months of July and August there are many 'festas' held in the small villages where you can eat and drink to your heart's content for a minimal amount and they are a truly memorable way to experience the real heart of Tuscany.

Comfortable retreat from it all!

  • 4 of 5

We had a lovely week at the property. The location is absolutely beautiful, nestled in the hills with stunning views - as long as you're aware you can't just pop to a local cafe or bar. We had no problem getting there or away with our little hire car. The house is furnished fine for the 4 of us - plenty of seating & all the kitchen equipment you need to keep a family fed. The outdoor dining furniture could be a little more stable, but is adequate. Really hot weather kept the large pool at a glorious temperature. The infamous dogs were very annoying on the first night, but the rest of the week they seemed to settle down! The only other sleep disturbance was due to the village party which went on till 3am one evening! I had some great morning runs up and down the local hills, and a lovely 5km loop for a family walk. The information and directions Fiona provided were great!

Great holiday

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay in Fiona's house. Fantastic surroundings and amazing views. When the weather was nice we made the most of the lovely pool .The place is a bit far from everything but that was just what we needed - a real get away.

Beautiful Property, Stunning Views, Relaxing Holiday

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a wonderful stay.

The property is approached via an unmade single track road, which when driving in the dark for the first time is a little daunting! But it is so peaceful and quiet here it’s worth the bumpy ride.

The accommodation is approached along a stone path with the pool at the bottom of the path behind a locked gate.

The accommodation was lovely and really well thought out. The upper terrace with dining area and sun loungers for the late evening sun along with a BBQ. Inside the bathroom is well equipped and the dining / kitchen / living area is spacious and lovely. The master bedroom was a good size and the bed comfy. The twin room was also a good size although we didn’t use this room. The accommodation stayed cool throughout the day as long as the breeze was allowed to pass through the open windows.

The pool was a very good size and the temperature was perfect for cooling off from the hot sun.

The view was amazing during the day and at night (no light pollution) so we were lucky enough to see the persids when we were there.

We really enjoyed our stay here and look forward to coming back again. Fiona was quick to respond to queries and kindly had some essentials available for us when we arrived late at night.

Beautiful, but......

  • 3 of 5

This is a truly beautiful villa which has been carefully restored to a high standard. The views are breathtaking, the pool is lovely and it really is 'away from it all'.

But there were a few things which let it down and which should be borne in mind before booking this place: firstly the details given weren't quite accurate- there was no second fridge, the passcode for both the wifi and the pool lock was wrong. Secondly the drive to the house is not for the faint-hearted; lots of steep, narrow roads, blind bends with sheer drops to one side etc. Take a small car with automatic transmission. Thirdly and finally, there are a number of dogs in the nearby village which literally bark all night. Sadly we didn't get a single good sleep because of them and left exhausted, which is just the opposite of what you need on holiday. Such a shame.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review and I am pleased you thought the villa was beautiful. It is such a shame that you did not contact either myself or our friends concerning the wifi and pool lock during your stay as these details were accurate when I emailed the details to you, however I am pleased to note that you still managed to enjoy the pool. The house is in the Apennines mountain range as stated in the house details which is why we have such fantastic views but this does mean that the roads are typical mountain roads which may not be appropriate for nervous drivers. There is a main road to the village of Vallico di Sotto and then a white road (which is very normal in Italy) from the village to our house which is less than a kilometre. The house is in the countryside which is why I describe it as ‘rural’ in the description which does mean that if you have the windows open you will hear ‘night noises’ however the dogs are kept near the village and tend to bark only at feeding time.

Rural and peaceful

Property situated approx 2 km along a bumpy track. Requires 4 x4 ! It is an apartment in a farmhouse.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your feedback. The house is situated along a white road which is very typical in Italy about 1km from the village, unfortunately the road suffered over the winter which meant it was a little bumpy however there has been remedial work completed recently by the commune. We have had the house for twelve years and during this time have never had to rent a 4x4 which are expensive to hire, however I do not recommend a sports car :) The house consists of two, self contained two bedroom apartments and we currently rent the upper apartment (as detailed in the pictures) with sole use of the pool, the lower apartment is available to rent if guests are holidaying with friends or family.

Fantastic Holiday in a stunning Location

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for a week at the beginning of May, the weather was perfect but most of all the Villa is fantastic! Waking up every morning to stunning views across the valley. Breakfast outside in the sun looking over the pool (which is just great to relax at after a day exploring lucca and the surrounding areas).

Just a short drive from Lucca itself where we spent alot of time exploring. The local area in the valley is full of wonderful places to stop and take in the surroundings and the food available in the local restaraunts is great.

The local people are friendly and very helpful (saving us from a broken down hire car!) notihg is too much trouble.

We stayed here with our 8 month old Baby Boy who had a great time and all was provided for him at the villa (cot, high chair etc).

We could not have been Happier; thanks again for allowing us to visit your wonderful house Fiona!
