Honeysuckle (Sleeps 4 + infants, 2 Bedrooms)
Pilgrims Rest Cottages E996
About Martin Brook
Having come for a holiday in 1997, with our then 5 young children, staying up the road, we took the plunge a moved. A great place to live, work and play - has to be given a premier UK resort where holidaymakers come for their holidays!
Martin Brook purchased this Cottage in 1997
Why Martin Brook chose Torquay
We love historical, olde worlde charm but all those types were in the middle of nowhere. To find, what turns out to be the oldest residency on The English Riviera, yet within a stroll of shops, but retaining the peace and quiet of a bygone age, was too give to pass.
What makes this Cottage unique
Rated by English Heritage of National Importance, these cottages are the only ones of their type found within Torquay. Dating back to the 15th century with links to the Spanish Armada and the Prince of Orange, now loving restored with historical roots but filled modern day luxuries. To stay in such a place, yet have access to excellent local shops within a stroll, beaches, countryside and all that Torquay and surrounding villages offer, is brilliant.

Really nicely laid out cottage
We had decided to take a short break and looked and found Pilgrims cottages on HomeAway.
Once we arrived and settled in we immediately started to unwind which was exactly what we needed. Quick walk around the corner for some good fish and chips and we were settled for the evening.
Really would recommend staying here for a lovely quiet getaway.
It was a pleasure having you stay and so glad you got the peace and quiet you needed to just get away after a very hard few months - Honeysuckle doing its stuff and, yes, the local chippy is a favourite fo guests. One of the great things in staying with us; you can get that peace and quiet, though if you want, get the action as well with so much to do within 1-5 miles with the many beaches, attractions and eateries enjoyed over the years. Next time Paul, you can venture out. See you again soon and thank you for taking the time to write your review. Best wishes, Martin and Kim
Fifth visit and still 5 stars from us.
Great having you, Karen and the lovely 'Beryl' come to stay again.
So glad Honeysuckle is still hitting the mark for you guys and maintaining top quality. Goes with us winning our two awards in November last year for 'Top Dog Friendly Business' and 'Runner up for Best Self Catering' on The English Riviera.
Look forward to your return stay in September.
Best wishes, Martin and Kim
Amazing Holiday Let! You will definitely be seeing us again!
Amazing holiday let! Flew into Exeter picked up hire car and were greeted with the warmest of welcomes at Pilgrims Rest!
Long weekend to see the father and use valuable time to explore some amazing sights, Martin and Kim are an absolute pleasure and make you feel extremely welcome from the moment you arrive!
Great touch with wine and cookies - very grateful
And used as an excuse to sit and chill and read all the amazing hints and tips from other residents of your beautiful cottages!
Beds soooo comfy! Ideal location! Great advice on where to go!
Will definitely be back in the Summer!
Glad you had such a great time with us and enjoyed all our facilities and the extras that can make a lovely stay a wonderful one. We are always grateful when new guests choose us.
We've learned over the years, when on our holidays, the importance of providing decent information so guests get the most out of their stay and find the gems in the area - hence our personal information folders which go down well.
Comfy beds are so important and we spent time and money looking for that special mattress.
Thank you for taking the time to write your review and look forward to visit number two in the summer, now you have tasted The English Riviera and Pilgrims Rest.

Peaceful break in a beautiful retreat
Honeysuckle barn is just wow and it’s surroundings make you feel relaxed straight off the bat. It’s a perfect little holiday cottage with everything you need to enjoy your stay. It has all the modern amenities you need but still keeps the rustic vibe that appealed to us in the first place. Will definitely be returning in the future!
Pleasure having you all stay Jamie for your pre-Christmas get away.
Glad you experienced its peacefulness and all that you needed. We aimed to maintain its historical feel whilst adding the modern day comforts and supply all you needed and above.
Look forward to seeing you all again in the future.
Thanks for taking the time to write a review.
Happy Christmas and New Year and best wishes, Martin and Kim

We had a lovely time as always nice and peaceful and Martin is helpful and friendly
Dear Steven and Susan
Great having you all stay again with mum and dad enjoying their time again with us in our Honeysuckle with their lovely 'Poppy and Daisy'. Extra Special time, this time, when hearing we were double award winners at the regional tourism awards!
See you again in the new year.
Best wishes, Martin and Kim
Desperately needs TLC. The pics on the web site for the property were misleading.
Web site shows pics of mainly the three bed, which was misleading. shower cubicle did not exist in two bed cottage we were in. Bathroom and kitchen floor tiles chipped/cracked. Lock on front door needs replacing as we were locked in on three occasions and had to use the window to get out. There was no thermostatic/safety switch on the bath/shower tap, children would get scalded. Mattress in second bedroom were uncomfortably hard. Space between landing and open bedroom door was tight. Utensils etc in kitchen were bare minimum. No hairdryer, no cleaning materials or vacuum cleaner. No spare light bulbs or toilet roll,
Dear John, all comments, both positive & negative, are taken seriously - we always want to give our guests a great time, appreciating they choose us. Comments help maintain excellence & put right any issue. With 56 5* reviews out of 61 on Homeaway, 2* is a shock. We have acted on areas we agree & have returned to all 5*.
Misleading Pics – the advert covers our 4 bed, 2-bathroom, 1 shower room, Threshing Barn & 2 bed, 1 bathroom, Honeysuckle. With size difference, Threshing has more. Each picture when clicked, shows the relevant property name, so there should be no confusion. Extra safeguard is made within the property’s description. However, we have noticed if you simply scroll through the pictures - & also don’t check the description - it’s not clear, so a note has been made in the wording, guiding guests to click on the picture to 100% safeguard.
Exit - On your 4th day you came about exit problems. We supply 2 keys. It transpired one key didn’t work on exit, although the other worked both ways. You didn’t mention any further problem & we have since replaced the faulty key.
Lack of provision - On arrival guests receive their goodies, welcome letter & notes. Unfortunately, you communicated on the wrong barn and so the welcome wasn’t initially present; handed in the evening. Within the letter there’s clarification on access to hoover, hairdryer, cleaning, bulbs etc - guests merely ask us if they require during their stay (saves cluttering the cottage, child safety & unfortunately thefts over the years). You in fact asked for hoover, dryer & extra light bulb, which we supplied. Your review implies there were none; this clarifies they exist, just not stored in the cottage.
Hot Water / Safety – thank you for raising the concern, however parents control the temp by simply turning the cold and hot taps appropriately.
Well equipped – as a 2-bedroom cottage, sleeps 4, we provide 8 of each main/small plate, bowls, wine glasses, tumblers, knives, spoons, forks etc. Many reviews say how well Honeysuckle is equipped, but if you needed something extra, we’d happily supply, but weren’t asked - as previous reviews have shown, we like to go the extra mile.
Mattress - Over years we’ve had many favourable comments on the beds; however, the 2nd room is typically used by children, not adults. We thank you for raising a possible issue and will check.
Finally, floor tiles have been checked & 3 hair line cracks found. I am sorry and have repaired.
Best wishes, Martin
