About the property

Detached Sea View Cottage near Laureana Cilento, Campania - All Year Round, Countryside Location, 15 Min Drive To Beaches, Great Walks.

Villa Nerola is unique. It is a detached homely cottage for two set in stunning countryside with spectacular sea views (guests tell us the photos don't do the property or the view justice) together with peace and tranquility. You instantly have a sense of being on top of the world in the little piece of paradise. Open all year round. It is only 15 minutes drive to the sandy beach at Baia di Trentova just outside Agropoli. There are sea views (and sunsets) from the patio, garden, sitting room and bedroom. It has a galleried bedroom, spacious open plan living and is well equipped for a self catering holiday. It has a private patio to the front and private garden to the side and patio surrounded by shrubs and plants with a plunge pool from the end of May to September. In the autumn and winter the lower terrace provides another area from which to sit and marvel at the sea view. It is in a rural location and offers spectacular sea views, stunning sunsets across to the Amalfi coast, countryside and wildlife although only a short drive to all amenities. Together with the owners' house it is set in 5 acres of land and countryside bordering the Cilento National Park. The quiet and secluded cottage makes a perfect place to relax and enjoy the sense of calm and tranquility that is so hard to find these days. We recommend the use of our 4x4 car to hire to our guests as our private track is steep, winding and uneven. We can collect from Agropoli-Castellabate railway station at no charge. The trains are cheap and easy to use and direct from Naples central station. A local taxi costs 150-160 euros each way from Naples airport depending on the time of year. The cottage is warm and cosy in the winter as it has a wood burning stove - light and airy in the summer with a plunge pool to cool down. A great location from which to explore the many medieval hilltop villages, a choice of sandy beaches and pretty coastal towns. The Greek temples at Paestum are only 25 mins away. The Amalfi coast, Pompeii, Herculaneum, Mount Vesuvius are only 90 mins away. The grotto at Castelcivita is 1hr drive. Buffalo farms to try out the creamy mozzarella and other produce are 20 mins drive with the only organic farm in southern Italy located near Paestum called Vannulo. Boat trips. Plenty of local countryside/sea walks, endless wildlife, peace, tranquillity, views that change during the day, sunsets to marvel at. There is plenty to do in the area at any time of year or just relax and watch the landscape change before your eyes from the sitting room or gardens. We provide books, cds and dvds for lazy days together with maps and local information for venturing out.

The Thalasso Spa at San Marco di Castellabate is only 25 mins drive and they offer a tantalising range of massages and beauty treatments, a 3 hour 'Sea Path' to try out all the different pools, steam rooms etc.

Ferries run from Salerno port to Capri and the Amalfi coast from April to October. In July and August the smaller ferries from Agropoli port to Amalfi, Positano and Capri.

About Vanessa Hawes

Richard and I found the property in 2006 and after several years of hard labour restored it back to its former glory. Together with the stunning views across to the Amalfi coast it really is a little piece of heaven up on the hill. The surrounding countryside is very attractive with rollings hills, mountains in the distance and the sea being only 15 mins drive away. What more could you ask for! This part of the Cilento is still very much unknown and therefore unspoilt so let's just keep it between us....

Vanessa Hawes purchased this cottage in 2006

Why Vanessa Hawes chose Laureana Cilento

In a nutshell, the stunning sea view, the closeness to the sea and a sense of peace. This is a very unspoilt area and surrounded by the Cilento National Park where there is all manner of wildlife and beautiful countryside. It offers the best of both worlds - quietness and peace but there is life out there if you want it and all amenities are within a short drive or a long walk. The 2 local villages of San Martino and Laureana Cilento are very traditional, friendly and a taste of the 'real' Italy.

What makes this cottage unique

The location is unique. The cottage is detached and private. The stunning sea views with a countryside position offer the perfect place to unwind and just relax. The changing views from the patio are captivating.

The cottage caters for all your needs - even a sea view from the bed. It provides a home from home feel.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We spent 4 lovely weeks pottering here. Lovely lazy times soaking up the views and exploring this delightful area. Thank you for your help when needed and for all the little added touches.

Notes on accommodation: The cottage oozes rustic charm. It has been sympathetically built and furnished to provide comfort and that feeling of a home from home. Open plan living with a galleried bedroom overlooking the sitting room. The kitchen is fully equipped and modern as is the spacious shower room. From the patio you can enjoy the views and sunsets and to feel a sense of being 'on top of the world'. The cottage is ideal for two people who enjoy country life and want to get away from it all and yet is close enough to find some life if you wish by a short car drive. There is a BBQ for outside cooking. There are plenty of restaurants, cafes and shops in the villages and larger towns which are all within 5-15 mins away. Outside of the summer months (May-Sept) the local hilltop restaurants are open at weekends. In Agropoli the restaurants are open all year round. In the colder months you can have a meal sitting at the arched window and still enjoy the view in the warmth in front of the woodburner. Wifi. Outside: There is a garden to the front of the cottage with rockery, olive trees and shrubs. There is a further garden area to the side of the cottage. There is also a plunge pool for the sole use of guests (from mid May - end of September) and is heated by a solar panel. The patio is directly outside the sitting room and there is a covered pergola outside the kitchen both offering uninterrupted views of the sea and countryside. A barbecue is provided as are sunloungers, garden table and chairs. When the pool is taken down the area provides a sunny eating area with sea view. The above mentioned areas are private and secluded. There are herbs in the garden which can be used for cooking with. There are celebrations throughout the year of various foods such as artichokes, chestnuts, figs, and more. Cleaning / Towels / Linen: Included are bath and beach towels, bed linen, hairdryer, iron, ironing board. The cottage is cleaned after each guest leaves. Both linen and towels are changed weekly.

A perfect romantic hideaway

  • 5 of 5

This was our second visit to this amazing location. It's a stylish, rustic, charming little place and it's a gateway to some lovely beaches and quaint hillside villages. We arrived super stressed from our hectic life in central London and left super chilled. Enough said. Oh, one criticism: the owners Richard and Vanessa strive so hard to provide their guests with ultimate privacy, that you hardly ever see them. This is a shame because they are really lovely people. We'll be paying a third visit.

The cottage exceeded expectation

  • 5 of 5

If you want a perfect cottage for 2 in a beautiful quiet and peaceful position, with excellent hosts, this is the place for you. The cottage is extremely well equipped with the most amazing views across The Bay of Salerno. There had been a fire in the valley a couple of months before we arrived and the amount of green growth already in evidence was great to see. Nothing is ever too much trouble for Vanessa and Richard who completely respected our privacy - they provide a mobile phone and will ring if they need to go over to the cottage. We cannot recommend this property highly enough

The best yet

  • 5 of 5

I almost don't want to write a review because I want to keep this total gem of a place all to myself!

Where do I begin....the description and photographs do not do the villa justice and it is only with your own eyes you will truly appreciate what a beautiful place this is.

We arrived for 7 nights in August to spend my 30th birthday in peace and quiet. By the 3rd night we knew we had not booked a long enough stay. By the 6th night we knew we would be back!

The area has recently been ravaged by wild fires and so there was a stark but beautiful contrast between the fresh green garden and the scorched hillside. It was fascinating.

The villa itself is ideal for a couple- clean and modern bathroom, well equipped kitchen, cosy living space and a wonderful mezzanine bedroom with views right across the valley to the coast and to Pompei beyond.

Vanessa and Richard have thought of everything- Starting with excellent communication right up to our arrival, a hamper of assorted goodies (cold beers and focaccia bread were met welcomed!) and the hire of their 4x4 (which we can recommend- despite having driven around Italy several times and tackled questionable roads in our past, the track up to Vanessa and Richard's is longer than you think and the little Fiat did us proud!)

And what lovely people they are too. We unfortunately had an issue with the water supply during our stay but both Richard and Vanessa (and the local plumber) were so gracious and proactive about the whole thing, it was fixed as promptly as possible, given it was festa, and with minimum disturbance to our break. We really didn't mind at all- we are creative people who like to go camping, so to have a small interruption in water was not an issue for us.

We heard wild boar at night and were hugely entertained by the lizards that scuttle abut the place in the day, eating grapes, falling from the vines and sunbathing on the rocks.

The highlight of the holiday though has to be the views. They are spectacular, stunning and any other adjective you can think of! we watched the sun set every night over the sea, and then the land come to life with twinkling lights as the towns got ready for the evening.

Other highlights for us included the daily visits from Vanessa's dogs, Rosie and Poppy, along with some occasional visits from the rest of the pack!

Thank you Vanessa and Richard for the perfect holiday. See you next year!

The lost paradise

  • 5 of 5

The lost paradise ......... we have found it again here at Villa Nerola!

It is such a peaceful place to be, looking at butterflies

and bees dancing around the trees and shrubs in the garden.

Villa Nerola really is the most beautiful and relaxing place we´ve ever been to on our holidays.

Thank you so much Vanessa and Richard for your kind hospitality and to be able to enjoy the paradise you have created. We will miss it very much..... so why not come again soon!

Beautiful location with stunning views

  • 5 of 5

This cottage is a home away from home. It's fabulous! Beautiful location with stunning views. It's ideal for couples who seek some much needed peace and quiet. Richard and Vanessa are the perfect hosts who really do make your stay a very welcome one. The welcome hamper was absolutely perfect and the information packs within the cottage (along with the maps) really make it easy for you to get about and decide where to go. They really have thought of everything to make your stay very pleasant. The hire of their 4x4 is definitely worth while so that the near by villages can be explored and you can travel to some of the stunning points of interest at your leisure. We've come home feeling relaxed after having enjoyed a lovely week here and a view to definitely returning!

Baia di Trentova, Agropoli
Car: necessary

The closest beaches are in Agropoli which are 15 mins by car. The most picturesque is at Baia di Trentova just outside of Agropoli. From July-9 Sept small ferries run daily to Amalfi town, Positano and Capri. The pretty coastal town of Santa Maria di Castellabate is approx 20 mins in the car with several sandy beaches. There are further coastal villages heading south such as Case del Conte, Punto di Licosa, Acciaroli...... The 3 Greek Temples at Paestum are only 25 mins drive and sit majestically in the countryside - a truly magical place to visit. On the way you can visit 'Vannulo', the only organic mozzarella farm in the region. The buffalo are treated with respect and care, they listen to classical music in the morning and have a mechanical massage in the afternoon! As a result the mozzarella and products are delicious. There are Grottoes at Castelcivita (41km) and Pertosa (71km).

We offer to our guests the hire of a 4x4 as our private track is steep, winding and uneven. Collection from Naples airport or Agropoli railway station (20 mins drive). Naples international airport is 120km and takes approx 1hr 45 mins by car. Trains run from Naples central station to Agropoli-Castellabate and the fast train takes 1hr 10mins. Flights to Naples airport from the UK are: British Airways, Easyjet and Meridiana. Thomson Fly in the summer.

The hilltop village of Laureana Cilento is approx 3 km away with a post office and two restaurants, one with a cafe. The village of San Martino is a couple of mins in the car where there is a pharmacy, 2 cafes, a grocery shop and hardware shop. The small town of Torchiara is 8km where there are several restaurants, wine bar, shops, bank, cafes and small supermarkets. The large town of Agropoli is 15 mins in the car. The famous Greek temples at Paestum are 25 mins drive.

Further Details:

There are many similar hilltop villages all within a 10km radius offering all local amenities. The small medieval village of Rocca Cilento with its own castle (which can be viewed by appointment) is 5km away which is 600m above sea level offering stunning views of the countryside, lake and mountains. Other medieval villages include Castellabate (15km), Vatolla with it's museum/college of philosophy and many more. This area is famous for mozzarella made from farmed buffalo in Capaccio near Paestum where you can go on a guided tour of the factory and watch it being made and also sample the yoghurt, ice cream and cheese in the shop. There are many traditional coastal villages going further south from Agropoli: Santa Maria and San Marco di Castellabate, Ogliastro Marina, Case del Conte and Ernest Hemingway's favourite seaside resort at Acciaroli (30km). Further south to Palinuro and Sapri being the furthest point of the Cilento coast. Water sports are available along the coast which has been awarded the Blue Flag to denote clean and safe waters. Boats can be taken from Agropoli in July, August and mid September to Capri, the Amalfi coast and down to Palinuro and all year round from Salerno and Naples to the islands of Ischia and Procida. There is a grotto dell' Angelo at Pertosa. The largest monastery in southern Italy is at Padula. Further inland in the national park is the abandoned village of Roscigno Vecchia and surrounding beautiful countryside. Ancient churches and monasteries are in abundance in this area. The Cilento diet is known for its health giving qualities. There are plenty of restaurants and shops that sell locally produced olive oil, vegetables, salad, wild boar, locally reared pork, fresh fish and mozzarella which this area is famous for. Several buffalo farms sell mozzarella, icecream and yoghurt. An animal lovers paradise with buzzards, falcons, geckos, hoopoe birds, frogs, toads.
