About the property

Traditional Slovenian farm house set in country village

Our traditional Slovenian farmhouse built in 1850 and refurbished in 2009 is set off a quiet country road with spectacular views of the Julian Alps, just 4km from Tolmin, in the beautiful Soca Valley. The house has a large parking area to the front. To the rear is a covered terrace area with BBQ facilities and patio table and chairs to seat eight. Behind the house is a forest with numerous trails for walking. The house is arranged over three levels: The first floor has a fully equipped kitchen and living and dining space; the second floor has a large double bedroom and bathroom with bathtub/shower and washing machine; the third floor has a large double bedroom with exposed stone work, single bedroom and a bathroom. Along with the three main bedrooms that can sleep five there is a sofa bed in the living room that can sleep two. By special arrangement a further sofa bed could be used in one of the double bedrooms (Sleeps max. 8 people). Facilities include: TV DVD player.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Dear Patrick,

We were after our vacation in Tolmin still some time on the Adriatic coast and have now returned home. We liked it in your house very much. It was all perfect. We have a lot to discover from Slovenia. Many thanks for everything.

Highly recommended

  • 5 of 5

This is a beautifully converted farm house on the edge of a wood at the foot of a mountain. It has gorgeous views and the rooms are spacious and tastefully furnished. The position is wonderful with quick and easy access to the major tourist attrcations. At the same time, it is wonderfully quiet and quite secluded. Patrick is full of helpful advice and is very accomodating. I highly recommend this cottage to families! We had a great time!

the waterfall behind the house and the riverrafting in Kobarid or the car train to Bohinj should not be missed when staying there.

Ciginj is a small village with one pizzeria Ti with good service and a good price quality.

a great base for hiking and watersport

good location in a village, close to Tolmin - and Kobarid.

The waterfall a few hundreds meters above the house - and the Pizzeria should not be missed either.

Do not miss the auto train to visit the other side of the mountains Bohinij - a great experience just in the next village.

Lovely Family Holiday

  • 5 of 5

It was difficult to convince the owners of the Farmhouse to rent it to us in the winter season..and yes, the house was a bit cold. But all the other aspects of our stay made up for this shortcoming. We were 4 adults and two children. The house was comfortable and well situated. We were able to cross over and back form the Julian alps to the Italian Alps. We even spent a couple of days skiing. It was fun getting wood for the woodburning stove, and nice to warm ourselves at the end of a tiring days tour. We would certainly recommend staying at the Slovenian Farmhouse in Ciginj. Its certain to be even more wonderful during the gorgeous Slovenian summer months.

Cozy and Quaint

Excellent Family House

We stayed at the Traditional Farmhouse in April. We are a couple with three boys and one girl aged 7-14. This was the perfect vacation home for us. We were able to BBQ and walk in the forest just behind the house. We discovered brooks and creaks, and even a lovely waterfall. The view of the Julian Alps was breath taking. Cozy and quaint in the little hamlet of Ciginj, all of Slovenia was easily accessible to us. We particularly enjoyed cycling from village to village and the adventure sports and swimming on the Soca River.

Ciginj is a small, quiet village nestling below the wooded hillsides of the Soca Valley. There is a small, friendly local bar and pizzeria within walking distance of the farm house. Ciginj is conveniently situated just 5 kms from Tolmin to the North where guests can find Supermarkets, Banks, Bars, and Restaurants and active sports centers (as well as sports equipment rental). To the South is the University town of Nova Gorica on the Italian border. Here there is a large shopping precinct with food stores, clothes and shoe shops.

Local events -On site:

The house is right beside walking, cycling, mountain biking, pizzeria/bar. It is possible to walk to Italy on the trail behind the house where there is a trattoria with great food and amazing views of the Soca Valley and Venice.

15 minutes drive away:

Close to the house you will find a swimming, kayaking, white water rafting, fishing, paragliding, horse riding and hiking and numerous shops, bars and restaurants. Wine tasting in nearby Goriza Brdo is a popular day out.

45 minutes drive away:

Lake Bled and Lake Bohinj are easily accessible by car train (30 mins)

Postonja Caves, Skojan Caves and the Lipizaner Horse Farm (45 mins)

Beaches: Italian (45 mins), Slovenian (75 mins)

Italy: Venice (2 hours); Cividale de Fruili (medieval town with Sunday flea market) 30 minutes. Trieste airport (50 minutes).

Austria: There is amazing drive through the mountains that will take you to Villach in 90 minutes. You can return by another spectacular mountain pass or by car train from Bohinj.

Other activities

The Soca Valley is famous for its adventure activities. Paragliding, Hang Gliding, River Rafting, Canyoning and Sky Diving are just a few of the adrenallin thrills on offer here. However, many visitors are content to hike in Triglav National Park, tour the wineries of Goriza Brda or use the area as a base for exploring the rest of the country. There is a car train which goes to Lake Bled and Lake Bohinj in thirty minutes. If you want to go further afield there is a stunning drive over mountain passes into Austria and Italy is a short drive away.

The neighboring district Goriza Brdo has numerous wineries and is a twenty minute drive away. Vipava is another excellent place to sample wine but this is further away - 40 minutes. Several tour operators run wine tasting tours from Tolmin

The nearest beaches are in Italy up the coast from Trieste (45 mins to 1 hour). It is also possible to drive to the Slovenian coast in about 90 minutes. However, most locals just use the Soca River banks as their beach and there are numerous other rivers and lakes in the area which are good for swimming.

Tourist attractions

The world famous Lipicia Horse Farm is located a 45 minute drive away and is a must for any horse lover. It is possible to combine this with a trip to the UNESCO world heritage site of the Skojan Caves - one of the world's largest caves complete with a river running through the bottom.
