About the property

Lodge and B&B in Reriz,Castro Daire, Portugal - Best Kept Secret In Northern Portugal

Quinta Souto Covo is situated in a very peaceful valley, one and a half hours drive from Porto and near the beautiful city of Viseu. The Douro River and Port wine area are nearby and historical towns such as Vila Real, Bragança and Coimbra are an easy day trip away.

The views from the main house and the self-catering Lodge, are breathtaking. There is a large, salt filtered pool on the terrace below the Lodge and down at the river a private 'beach' and swimming area with its own sunbaking terrace. The gardens are extensive and a pleasure to walk through and the sound of water follows you wherever you go.

The Lodge is a family house, with a large sitting room opening onto a 30m2 terrace overlooking the pool and gardens which lead down to the river. The Lodge sleeps 5 family members comfortably but we also offer two suites in the main house for larger families or friends who would like their own space.

The main bedroom with a 2x2 meter bed is on a spacious mezzanine floor with spectacular views.

The second sleeping area is an attic niche off the entrance hall. It is reached by a small ladder and is a favorite with children and teenagers.

The third sleeping area is a single , ensuite bedroom which is part of the house but has its own entrance next to the Lodge front door.

This is particularly good for a Granny or older child who would appreciate more privacy.

The kitchen / breakfast room with a huge picture window is fully equipped for 12 people and has a dishwasher, coffee machine, all laundry items and fridge/ freezer.

There is ample seating and outdoor furniture for alfresco ding and a BBQ.

All linen towels and beach towels are supplied . Towel changes as needed.

The pool is salt water filtered and large and down at the river is a sun baking terrace ideal for picnics, with steps down to a sandy beach and large, safe natural pool. Following downstream is a long swimming lane leading to a ford, ideal for boating and exercise for the wild swimmers!

We have chickens, geese, dogs and a cat on the property so lots to amuse little ones who find it a magical place.

About The Owner

Tony and Sherrin bought Quinta Souto Covo in 2006.

In 2009 after a huge renovation of the Main House and Lodge in the large, riverside grounds, they decided to share their labour of love with guests and have made friends for life in the wonderful people who have stayed there since.

They are passionate about Portugal, the life, food, wine and history and enjoy passing on their knowledge.

'You will be welcomed as guests and leave as friends,' as one guest wrote, ' more of a house party than a villa rental'.

Whether your choice is Self catering in the Lodge or B&B in the Main House, the Cottrells will ensure your total privacy but be close enough to help with every detail to make your stay memorable.

The Owner purchased this house in 2006

Why The Owner chose Reriz

The Lodge and suites in the Main house are beautifully furnished with every little luxury to make your stay memorable.

The grounds and surrounding countryside are just breathtaking . The sound of water follows you everywhere from fountains, water channels and the river which flows through the garden. There are walks galore and beautiful terraces for the less energetic guest. It is perhaps the most beautiful area of Portugal, not so well known that there are hoards of tourists. The villages and city of Viseu nearby are full of history and some remarkable architecture and the two wine growing regions, Dão and Douro are within short driving distance, with very hospitable visits for wine tasting to be enjoyed.

Diverse, elegant and full of things to do , BEIRAS ALTAS and Quinta Souto Covo are a must for lovers of Portugal.

What makes this house unique

The Quinta is a haven of peace and tranquility. A place of forgotten childhood pleasures. Walks with animals, making boats and sailing them on the river, swimming at night in the flood lit pool.

It has become a place of return holidays and we have seen the transformation of little children into young adults, still beguiled by the magic of mountains and water, card games on the terrace, and wonderful local food and wine after an early morning hike with the family.

It is the atmosphere mixed with all the comforts of home that make this property so special.

So much or so little to do, such a hard choice!

Guestbook comments from the owner

A wonderful setting. The quality and comfort of our room with its superb interior design was second to none and the views to the mountains and across the river were really beautiful. This place is magical, as indeed the breakfasts that we had. Thank you we will be back. Mr & Mrs. R. Barrett, Lewes, UK.

The lodge is so warm and welcoming, and it really is paradise, Robina Wilmot - Singapore.

Best kept secret in Portugal and we loved the linen and decor, just so relaxing, permanent yearly booking please! Alexander Scully- Fulham, London

Notes on accommodation: Quinta Souto Covo is pet friendly (the owners have their own Labradors) and an exciting experience for children. All seasons are a joy; Winter with the chestnut harvest, Summer and Spring for walking and swimming or just lazing in hammocks reading whilst Autumn is the grape harvest and the whole region is steeped in this culture. The Lodge is part of (but private to) the main house where there are also bed and breakfast facilities, so there is always a helping hand and advice nearby! The owners live here all year round and are a font of information on the area and will warmly welcome you with a glass of Port on arrival and a tour of the Estate. A welcome breakfast hamper is provided on arrival for those choosing self-catering in the Lodge consisting of milk, eggs, bacon, butter, freshly baked bread, tomatoes and mushrooms. Outside: The terrace of the lodge has lots of outdoor furniture. A walkway leads to a chlorine free pool. The gardens cover an enormous area of 16,000 square metres consisting of vine- laden terraces, a paddock and eventually the River Paiva where there is a man-made terrace and sandy 'beach'. Fly fishing is amongst the best in the area and there is a large choice of varied and breathtaking walks. The views all over the Quinta are an artist's delight and local legend has it that Picasso painted here as a guest of the original owner who planned all the landscaping and planted the first vines. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All linen, towels (plus beach towels) and cleaning materials are provided. Cleaning is included once a week and more days are available for a reasonable aditional price.

Fantastic trip..

  • 5 of 5

I first saw this fantastic Quinta last year on YouTube and wanted to go then, but sadly had too much work to doo!!! This year however we decided to go for s short stay in late February and it did not disappoint at all...

The Owners Tony and Sherrin were amazing hosts and extreamly helpful and kind. After arriving we fealt very much at home as we went and had coffee with them in the main house. Also Sherrin’s home made bread was a real treat.

The lodge was fantastic and comfortable and the views are actually better in real life!!!

I really went to see the river. As a keen fly fisherman I wanted to see if it could fish well in the season. We walked a lot of the banks and it’s very accessible and a large amount of fish!!!!

If we were there longer we would have done more exploring as there is plenty to do. Particularly exploring the Towns and Villages on the Douro..

I would definitely go back for longer!!

Thank you Tony and Sherrin for a great break and see you again soon!

Lovely hosts but the property was not as described.

  • 1 of 5

This was a family holiday for 5 people - 2 adults, 3 teens.

Firstly - Tony and Sherrin are lovely people and Sherrin stayed up until 3am as our flight was delayed and we had travel problems. On arrival there was a fruit basket, wine, eggs and milk in the fridge etc and they offered us coffee the next morning and introduced themselves - very friendly - cannot fault them and if the rating was about people, I'd give them 5 stars.

Secondly - The accommodation. We picked the property because it was advertised as having 3 bedrooms. This is where the star rating falls.

Bedroom 1 - Gorgeous and perfect for a honeymoon couple.

Bedroom 2 was advertised as having 2 full sized beds which we thought was ideal for our teenage boys (17 and 15yrs old) and so expected a twin bedroom as the advert description was: "Bedroom 2: 2 x large single beds". However, bedroom 2 was a very small attic space that the boys could not stand up in, indeed they could only just kneel and it had a sloping ceiling. There was no bedroom furniture, no wardrobe and just a ledge to put suitcases and some clothes on - the full sized beds were in fact mattresses laid onto the attic floor. The main advert also stated that "all bedrooms have separate hand basins" - it did not have a hand basin. There was only a ladder to access the space and this had to keep being moved so we could open the front door. This was more than disappointing and the description is a misrepresentation of the room. The lack of space for our 2 sons did have a dramatic effect on the enjoyment of our holiday because they both found it cramped, they couldn't get dressed in it and it offered no privacy and also as the ladder blocked the front door access - it meant that if our daughter wanted to come into the lodge during the night (her room had no access to the main lodge other than via the main door), she could not (unless we stored the ladder, which would have meant our sons being unable to climb down to use the toilet). In summary bedroom 2 is a sleeping area and not a bedroom and not suitable for adults or teenagers and the description did not give a fair or accurate description of what it actually was.

Bedroom 3 was a pretty room with an en-suite. It has no access to the main lodge other than via the main front door - something we had queried in advance but I think the communication on this was confused.

As we arrived at 3am we had no option but to accept the accommodation as was.

We were 5 teenage girls and loved our stay. We all wanted to stay much longer!

Sherrin and Tony are so lovely people. They helped us with everything and gave us tips about the area and the best beach.

The area is beautiful and quiet, perfect to relax and enjoy life. The river and the pool are great ways to relax and swim.

You do need a car but even I didn´t have a problem to rent a car, although I am only 18 years old. So it is very easy, not very expensive and you are flexible with a car.

The house itself is just stunning! We all were speechless for a few minutes and just had to check out everything. The upper bedroom with the double bed is amazing and even has a small sink to brush your teeth. One friend and I slept in the other small bedroom, which is like a small attic but has enough space to sleep and store your luggage. I personally loved it there. Since I am a pretty small person I could even stand in it.

There also is a single bedroom with a bathroom, which we only used as a bathroom, because one of us slept on one of the couches. We wanted to sleep in the same room, so the single bedroom was unused, but it is very pretty and I would have slept in it as well.

The whole house and the garden has a charme that makes you feel at home. We all were saying "I am going to stay here" throughout our whole stay and at the end no one of us wanted to leave. We also wanted to adopt the dogs and the cat, but we knew that we couldn´t just take them to Germany with us, so we left them there.

All in all this house is amazing and Sherrin and Tony are the best hosts. We all want to come back and stay longer that time. Maybe forever...

Near Reriz, a charming lodge on the shore of Rio Paiva. So tranquil and blissful, truly magical ...

  • 5 of 5

We arrived on the 28th and were welcomed by Tony and Sherrin as though we had known them for years. Right from that very moment we felt at home. Sherrin had made bread for us, we had a bottle of wine on the table to welcome us and the fridge was stocked with all we needed for supper and breakfast.

We stayed at the chalet which is exquisite and tastefully decorated. The kids absolutely loved the loft niche.

The property is secluded and so peaceful. Although it was winter we had breakfast on the terrace overlooking the river, the views from the lodge are amazing. The kids played freely on the land and with the dogs and cat.

Tony and Sherrin had plenty of suggestions on what we should visit in the region and where we could eat.

On New Year's Eve we had snacks and at the main house with the lovely couple and it was wonderful to get to know them better.

We had a truly marvelous time and hope to return to swim in the pool and private beach on the river.

We could not have asked for a better long weekend.
