Townhouse in Alhama de Granada, Andalucia - Fantastic Location In Traditional Andalucian Spa Town

We believe our house is in one of the most beautiful locations in Spain, in the small town of Alhama de Granada, in the fertile land of the Poniente Grandadino in Southern Andalucia. We have a beautifully renovated house in this lovely historic spa town. There is great outdoor space both shaded and sunny, we have a fabulous little pool. In the garden one of the bedrooms is in a 700 yr old Moorish kiln. I the town there are churches, lovely squares, a spectacular gorge, a red Moorish fort, an Arabic quarter, fresh food stores and 38 cafe bars and restaurants all in easy walking distance of the house. Alhama de Granada is perched nearly a thousand metres above sea level on the edge of Tajos Gorge. The town is famous throughout Spain for the thermal baths - hot therapeutic water bubbles up in to four thermal pools next to the river. 12km from town is the spectacular Bermajales lake with sandy beaches. There is great hiking, sailing, abseiling, kayaking, mountain biking and skiing activities all within easy reach of the house.

About Stephen & Allison McCann

My wife and I retired (early) 3 years ago, we have 3 kids, one working in London, one working in Leeds and one in about to start uni in Leeds. Since retirement we spend a lot more time in this part of Andalucia, our Spanish is improving (slowly) and we are certainly getting to know the area even better. It is a delight to be here.

Why Stephen & Allison McCann chose Alhama de Granada

We love this part of Spain, we try to visit as often as possible. We feel it is an authentic Spanish town - incredible light, fabulous food, great people and hardly any English spoken. It is not far from the airport at Malaga, but it is a million miles from the pubs and full English breakfasts on the coast. Also the prices are a lot more reasonable than the coast, you are simply charged the same as the locals.

What makes this house unique

When we stay at the house, even if it is for a long weekend we feel immediately relaxed. It is a very healthy place to be, the food is great, people are friendly and the temperature is perfect whatever time of the year we visit. We wanted to be in a small town, so that everything is in walking distance, shops, cafe bars, the gorge, the spa ... it takes a little over an hour to get from Malaga, we park the car and it mostly stays there for the entire duration of the trip. The level of stress reduction is amazing when you can leave the car and walk everywhere.

"What a great place! The house was just perfect. Plenty of places to find your own spot and get down to doing nothing. In the end there were seven of us staying and yet it never felt crowded. We loved the top room, especially the open air shower! Great to sit on the terrace up there and watch the light fade, the birds flocking and settling in the trees and the stars coming out.

You’ve chosen a great town. Alhama is a lovely little place. So relaxed and so Spanish. Many great evenings spent enjoying the tapas in various bars. Never found a bad one. Just a really lovely, friendly, charming town We’ll be back!"

Notes:
Notes on accommodation: The house has been beautifully renovated by craftsmen, using locally hand made terracotta tiles, wooden shutters and other sympathetic materials. There is underfloor heating in the kitchen and the kiln room. There is also a wood burning stove for those chilly winter evenings. There is plentiful on-street parking outside the house and close by. Outside: A private pool with water spout catches the sun most of the day in summer. Pool is 5m x 3m - pool is open May to Sept. There is a 50 metre deck accessed directly from the kitchen / living room, there is a table and four chairs perfect for breakfast or al fresco lunch on the terrace. There is a shaded area under the deck complete with double hammock great for that afternoon siesta or just to relax and read. At the top of the house there is a small terrace with a couple of chairs to catch the final rays of sunshine. The bedroom in the ancient kiln in the garden is a very interesting circular room, with underfloor heating and a mezzanine floor. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels and bedlinen are included. Extra cleaning service available on request. Other: There is an extra bedroom in the garden with twin beds for Jul-Aug use only, use of this room cannot be guaranteed, please liaise with us. There are lots of books in the house, local books, travel guides on the area and good novels.

The house was lovely, suited all our needs. The location was excellent.

Perfect for a couple of families including 3 teenagers. Steve opened up the cave room as extra sleeping space which was perfect for two of the teenagers, giving them their own space. The pool was a godsend as the temperature reached in the late 30s for our stay. The old town was gorgeous and everything was on your doorstep. Everyone was friendly and we got to practice our Spanish too! The cafes and bars (and you are spoilt for choice) were all excellent.

We were in the perfect location for visiting Granada City, the Alhambra Palace, Loja, Malaga Old Town and Frigliana,

authentic Spanish house in lovely village

House was approx. 40 minutes from Granada Airport - village very easy to find . House a little tricky to locate initially but helped by lovely man in Tourist information and able to text housekeeper who was very helpful . Authentic house very comfortable . Pool was lovely. Village very quaint - ample bars and restaurants although free tapas with each drink made socialising very cheap! Local tourist information very helpful; and organised walking tour of village a must for 2 euros each! Lovely walks through the gorge and fantastic visit to the Alhambra in Granada ( about 75 mins away . Don't book through tour agents as can be very pricey - book direct with Alhambra and was only 15 euros each. Recommend for a authentic Spanish holiday away from tourist areas.

Attractive, quiet house in a pleasant mountain town.

We very much enjoyed staying in this house and sharing something of the life of the town of Alhama de Granada. There is enough room in the property for our family of five, although we had to use one of the separate mattresses from the store to create separate beds in the top room. The room in the kiln was attractive and contested, and the space under the decking bridge was useful for keeping cool in the hot afternoons. We made good use of the pool, which is not really big enough to swim in but useful for relaxing in and cooling off after walking in the heat. The bedrooms themselves were a little cramped and the beds basic, but the provision of three bathrooms with a particularly good shower in the 'cave' was much appreciated. We loved the town, especially its old quarter and the churches, although it was not easy to get access to them. The surrounding countryside is impressive and the air is clear and clean, although the drive up through the mountains takes about an hour from the coast which does restrict the number of places you can get to. There are plenty of good, lively tapas bars and restaurants in the town, which was always full of life from about 10.00pm onwards.

Great little house with so much character!

Lovely house in a great little town! House was clean and well equipped, ample space and some amazing features. The house had been renovated with care and attention. Loved the deck, pool and cave bathroom! Owners were on hand to answer questions and were really helpful. The house is a very pleasant but short walk into town where there are plenty if shops and restaurants. Would recommend this property highly.

Special interest holidays:

Alhama de Granada is a classic, beautiful rural Andalucian spa town with a spectacular gorge and fantastic countryside all around. Lake Bermajales is nearby (12km) where there is a choice of water sports including swimming, windsurfing, kayaking, pedalos and fishing. Close by there is also horse riding, hiking, mountain biking and cycling. The surrounding countryside is ideal for walking, serious hiking and bird watching. A short walk up the gorge there is Ventoro spa with many treatments including massage & hydrotherapy. The wonderful city of Granada with the Albaicin and world famous Alhambra Palace is 50 mins drive away or 1 hour by local bus. Public swimming pools: there is an open air pool in town with grassy areas and a bar and one at Pato Loco a 25 min walk up the gorge, open June - Sept. At the bottom of town the balneario spa dates from Roman times, the thermal waters are 42 degrees C.

Coast/Beach:

Nerja is 1 hour 15 mins drive, there are a number of beaches and of course the world famous caves. Torre Del Mar is a mostly Spanish resort, 1 hours drive away. El Palo beach 1 hour 20 mins drive nice sandy beach with beach front restaurants and bars. Close to Malaga centre.

Travel:

Malaga airport is 1 hour and 20 minutes drive. Granada airport is 40 minutes drive. Car hire is recommended, but not essential. Once in Alhama everything you need is in walking distance; food stores, cafe/ bars, restaurants, banks and public swimming baths. It is also possible to arrive by train - the high speed AVE links Malaga to Madrid and in turn the rest of Europe. There is a bus service to the city of Granada, which runs 3/4 times a day and takes 1hr. Airport pick up can be arranged.

Granada City 55 mins. Granada Airport 40 mins. Loja 30 mins. Lake Bermejales 15 mins. Malaga airport 1 hour 20 mins.

Malaga town 1 hour 10 mins. Nerja 1 hour 10 mins. Montefrio 1 hour. Antequera 1 hour. Archidona 1 hour. Sevilla 2 hours. Lake Iznajar 2 hours. Cordoba 1 hour 45 mins.

Further Details:

There are 4 fresh fish shops in the town, 4 butchers, 4 fresh fruit and vegetable shops, 5 small supermarkets, banks, hardware stores, a market on Fridays selling a big variety of flowers, vegetables and clothes etc. There are around 38 cafe bars in the town, pretty much all serve food, hot and cold drinks, Some of our personal favourites include: Ochoa: classic Spanish rural bar, serving great rustic plates of food, local wine and draft beer. Run by Josephina and Paco. This place has very friendly service and in the colder months they place trays of hot olive wood coals (Braseros) under your table to keep you warm. Le Seguriya: sit down restaurant, run by Paco and Lola. Great food and relaxed atmosphere. There is a fantastic terrace overlooking the gorge. Meson Diego: Great for 'menu del dia' served every weekday lunchtime - around 8 euros for 3 courses and a drink. The terrace is a suntrap, which is great for most of the year, but it can be a bit hot in summer, there is an air-conditioned restaurant inside. Bar Andaluz: Also do a great 'menu del dia' served every weekday lunchtime - around 9 euros for 3 courses. Again catches the Sun. Bar Gallego: modern bar, serving great and interesting tapas. El Tigre: Is run by the effervescent Antonio the small traditional bar by the top corner of Constitution, fabulous tapas, stand inside if you can. In the summer season, they have control of a big space at the top of the square. La Crème: This is predominantly an ice cream and coffee shop, but they also do beer, cocktails & tapas, it is also the place to get a fresh loaf of bread on Sunday. Another favourite is a restaurant with great pizza called 'Al Dente' sandwiched between Bar Andaluz and Meson Diego on the main square. On the other side of the square is La Placeta which has great unusual tapas, also has tables out year round. There are two thermal spas on the edge of town offering spas, massages and a full list of other treatments with which to pamper yourself.
