Why Miss Josy Wade chose Brighouse
Ravensprings is a gorgeous example of an Arts and Crafts Victorian House when I saw it advertised it just leapt out of the page. At the time the House was in desperate need and deserved restoration. As an unlisted and unprotected large property it was under threat of being converted into six apartments or eight apartments due to it's size which would have been a great shame. At the time I thought that the central yet quiet location and the fact that most amenities were available on the doorstep made this a very desirable place to be. The location means that within 15 - 20 minutes you can be in the countryside or City Centre which offered the best of both worlds.
What makes this House unique
Ravensprings is a corner House and South Facing and thus sunny and light inside. It is also slightly elevated so it seems very private inside. Many of the original features were still in tact although a few had been lost during the 1960's / 70's. The fact that one of the previous owners had been part of the Miller's Oils family mean that a lot of money had been spent on the House during the late 20's, 30's & 40's. When the famous liner the Mauretania had been refitted in the early 1930's the owners had gone to the sale and purchased a stateroom of mahogany panelling and over-mantels and doors and other fitments. They then knocked the reception and sitting room into one enormous room (34' x 16') and fitted most of these antique furnishings in it. At the same time they had ornate and plaster beams to run the length of this high ceilinged room which are painted to look like they were carved from timber. The views from the dining room window was predominantly of Ravensprings Park. This was created as one of the owner's particular interests as it has a model railway which was donated to the Brighouse and Rastrick Model Society in the 50's. This is open to the public on about once a month and to see Father Christmas driving an model train full of children from your window is quite a novelty. The dining room was in fact meant to have been used as a billiards room at one time (thus the rise and fall over head lighting) and the Owner was meant to have had friendly games with Joe Davis (then retired) the World Champion Snooker player in this room. Another unique feature was the conversion of the cellar (out of bounds to visitors for health and safety reasons) into an air raid shelter during the First World War. There is a short tunnel leading to the lower garden. This was more recently (4 years ago) used as part of the film set of a spooky version of Alice in Wonderland on release as the indie film Red Kingdom Rising.

Large and very spacious, excellent place for a get-together
Excellent home for big groups
We had a great stay at Ravensprings. We had a stag do of 15 guys and the place accommodated us all comfortably.
Caroline and Josy were very welcoming and made sure we had everything we needed. Josy went out of her way to find the cheapest option to replace a damaged item which saved us losing a lot of our deposit.
Perfect for our needs
The house has great communal areas in the massive lounge, dining room and casual kitchen. We used the house for a cricket tour (2 adults, 12 children) and the children loved chilling out in the top dorm. We were really pleased to find such a large property that we could book for part of a week (Tuesday to Friday) so reckon it’d be great for long weekends too.
We ate in every night so can vouch that the mixture of ovens works!
Thank you for this great reveiw and we are so glad that you had a really good time at Ravensprings. You obviously made the most of the House and Caroline and I would like to thank you all for taking great care of Ravensprings and leaving it in a nice and tidy condition. Hopefully you may need to come for a rematch next year as you would all be most welcome.
Best Wishes and Many Thanks again,
Josy and Caroline.
What a wonderful property! Huge rooms and a brilliant garden.
Great facilities for families and large groups. Whole group managed to dine together in one room
Caroline the house manager was amazing!! Very helpful and welcoming.
Large house ideal for a get together.
We wanted a family get together for Mums 80th birthday. This seemed to suit as it had a downstairs bedroom as parents cannot manage stairs well. The house was more or less as seen on the photos. Not scruffy but not smart. Most of the fittings and fixtures were showing their age and a few locks on bathroom doors would be good as some bathrooms are shared. The downstairs bedroom felt like a store room, and was not at all suitable for parents who ended up having to go upstairs to a nice bedroom with ensuite. Outside space is small but nice and there were some new picnic tables which was lovely. We felt it was over-priced though as the immediate Brighouse area is not worth visiting and there was no where to go in walking distance. There were a couple of issues which were quickly sorted by the housekeeper Caroline who was brilliant. We were there for a week which was too long and we left early. If you just want a couple of nights away to meet up with friends or family then this is ideal.
Thank you for this review which I'm sure future guests will find helpful and I'm pleased that you had an enjoyable celebration and enjoyed the accommodation at Ravensprings. I am surprised that the ground floor bedroom didn't suit your parents as it's certainly never been a store room because it has large windows overlooking the courtyard and also has a shower and wash handbasin . Most of the guests using this room find it very comfortable and convenient and it is used almost every weekend. Happily I'm delighted that your parents found a more suitable alternative upstairs.
As for Brighouse the House is in a leafy and very quiet residentual location on the outskirts of town and the advantage is that it's only 2 miles from the M62 and you can get to so many interesting places to visit very easily.
As for the price, you paid £18 per person per night or £128 per week each over the Whitsun week which is one of the most popular weeks on the calendar. I am sure that you would be very hard pressed to find anywhere equivalent for less money bearing in mind the standard (4 star graded annually) faciities on offer. Considering also that 14 of your guests were adults then it's ridiculously cheap bearing in mind the huge costs involved in running such a large property.
Apologies if any bathroom door locks were not working and thank you for letting us know about this as we can get that fixed easily enough. Thank you also for this informatative review.
