About Anna Ward and John Willer
Anna Ward and John Willer both have long links with Yorkshire. Anna was born in Hull and John has run marathons over pretty much all of it. We keep up our connection by spending some time every year here at Minster View in York. We really enjoy strolling round the city, we get to go to the cinema on the river on a near daily basis and we top up our marmite supplies. (If you're puzzled by the last point it's because we live in Granada in Spain the rest of the year.) For us, spending time between Granada and York is pretty much perfect - and we know how lucky we are...
Anna Ward and John Willer purchased this House in 2002
Why Anna Ward and John Willer chose York
What we love about Minster View is pretty much summed up in the name! We have views of York Minster from all of the rooms at the back of the house, which is lovely. I particularly like looking at the Minster when doing the washing up. (Don't worry - we also have a dishwasher.)
What makes this House unique
York is a great city for strolling, with everything easily accessible within a few minutes walk. And because we are right in the centre we can pop out, have a look around, and then nip back for a cup of tea….. Perfect.

If you’re looking for somewhere centrally located, well equipped and a home from home then look no further. Excellent accommodation :)
In the middle of it all...
The flat is centrally located in York, minutes away from almost everything. The "Minster View" moniker is a bit of a stretch. You can glimpse the Minster out of the back windows, but that did mean it was very close, which was great.
The flat itself was...disappointing. I don't know if the owner was trying to keep the place "period" or what. The four-poster bed was, I'm sorry to say, atrocious. My wife and I sat on the edge and, after climbing out of the "hammock", decided to sleep in separate beds. Sleeping diagonally across the mattress helped some, but I'd have gladly given up the charm of the 4-post for a little back support. The living room furniture was worn and a bit shabby.
The kitchen, while having 26 wine glasses, did not have much else. The pans were old, scratched teflon skillets and the few pots that were there felt cheap. I couldn't find a cutting board. The refrigerator was half-sized. Fine for keeping our milk and butter cold, but the freezer was tiny. A pint of ice cream had to be wedged in sideways.
My wife and I were excited to be located above a book shop...or, when we arrived...over a chiropractor's office. Nothing against the chiropractor, we just felt misled by the pictures. The street is a fairly busy road. While you are in a city and know that going in, the discovery that the street is a direct route to the hospital is a little jarring. There is a small grocery nearby as well as a nice Italian restaurant...and two Vape shops. I never felt unsafe...I'm comfortable in the city, but the flat isn't on a quiet back street. Parking was nearby and secure behind an electric gate.
Getting the keys... I was concerned that, up to the day before we were to go to York, I still hadn't heard how we were to get the keys, or the remote for the parking gate. When I was contacted, I was asked (by someone other than the listed owner of the property) to come to their house to pick up the keys. They were very nice people, but it certainly made for some uneasiness, extra travel and inconvenience on my part.
Great location and accomodation
Great location and great accomodation. Excellent communication with owners and managers of the property. Amazing toys for my little boy to play with.
Family Get Together
Great property for our group of five. Really comfortable flat and we felt at home. Well equipped so had everything that we needed. Great location in York as it’s just outside the city walls. Nearby secure private parking means that you don’t have to think about your car during your stay. We would definitely stay here again.
What’s not to like
I would rate this property higher than 5* if I could. It is large, comfortable and airy. It is just a few minutes walk from any sites you might want to see and very centrally located. The kitchen is fully kitted out and we were able to cook full meals when we wanted to. There is a Sainsbury local around the corner for basics and the M&S Food Hall is about a 10 minute walk. If we’re in York again we would definitely stay here again.
What a terrific Victorian feeling place to stay!
We are a family of 5 who spent 3 nights here in complete comfort. Aside from a bit of street noise in the front bedroom, very quiet and peaceful. Comfy beds, well appointed kitchen, terrific location minutes from everything. Owners were very helpful in getting settled in.
From York to Scarborough (a lively seaside town with attractive double bay and castle) is 40 miles (and takes about an hour by car). It is also accessible by bus and train. There are plenty of other appealing seaside destinations within reach, for a day trip including Flamborough Head, Robin Hood's Bay and Whitby.
The nearest airports are:
East Midlands airport (96 miles or 2hrs by car).
Leeds/Bradford airport (30 miles or 1hr by car).
Manchester airport (82 miles or 1hr 45m by car).
The airports are also accessible by bus and train. A car is not necessary for exploring York. Everything is nearby and accessible on foot. A car is useful, although not vital, for further afield sights such as the Yorkshire Dales or the coast.
York is ideally placed as a base to explore the beauty and tranquillity of Harrogate and the Yorkshire Dales (about a 2 hour drive) and the North York Moors National Park (approx 1.5 hours drive).
Local shops such as the supermarket, chemist and a wide selection of cafes, pubs and restaurants are all available within a few yards of Minster View. The majority of the sights of York are available within a 5 - 20 minute walk.
