About Susannah Churcher
My parents purchased Casa do Mar in this a then undiscovered part of the Algarve in 1971. I now manage the house for the current owners who have owned the house for many years. It has provided for many great and happy family summers both for me as a child and now as an adult with my own children when I have a chance to visit . Casa do Mar has been a family holiday home for 40 years with visitors who initially brought their children to stay and still return yearly but now with their grand children !
Why Susannah Churcher chose Praia da Luz
Casa do Mar’s position is simply stunning. To go to sleep hearing the sea and wake up to the blue skies melting into the blue ocean, framed by the green lawns is a sight I never forget. The house isn’t surrounded by neighbours either because of its beach front location so it’s peaceful and private. Having a maid to clean the house and change the linens and keep things tidy means that you can really switch off and enjoy your holiday. Even when the house is full (it can accommodate 3 families easily), you never feel crowded which is often the case in most villas as there is so much space to spread out. There is a huge front terrace running the full width of the house, a separate big terrace by the lovely pool, lawns aplenty to spread out on and sun loungers for everyone! There is also a lovely marble outside dining table where you can sit in the shade enjoying long lazy lunches before flopping into the pool or going for a glass of wine on the beach as the sun sets. Its location brings great serenity as well as lots of fun, joy and relaxation.
What makes this Villa unique

Perfect for our group
Dear Rozanne, Many thanks for taking the time to post your review. I am so pleased you found Casa do Mar perfect for your group and you had also said to me (via email) 'We had a fabulous stay and everyone was really impressed not only with the location but also the spaciousness'. Casa do Mar's location directly on the beach really is incredible and unlike many very other villas is very large and spacious. We hope you can come and stay with us again soon. Kindest regards, Susannah
PERFECT family getaway
Great beachfront villa. We were a family of 8 adults and a 2 year old. The villa has 3 master suites with ensuite. 3 other bedrooms and 2 additional bathrooms. Very large inside and out. More than enough room for sun and shade outside. 2 living rooms, dining, very good kitchen, laundry. But the location is the deal maker! Great pool, grassy area. Steps to the beach and the lovely town of Luz. Many many restaurtants, 2 good supermarkets. We did go into the Lagos for groceries one day, but it isn't necessary. Luba, the housekeeper, makes sure everything is spotless and in working order. A pool shed had all the beach and pool toys needed. When we didn't dine out, we ate all our meals at the large outdoor dining table, right next to the very nice barbecue (grill). Susannah was a dream to deal with! I could go on and on ...... dreaming of the Algarve and this amazing villa! I can't imagine anyone being disapointed with this rental.
Thank you so much for your wonderful review, it sums up Casa do Mar beautifully. You were a pleasure to have as a guest and I do hope you will be able to make the long trip and visit us again soon. Susannah
This house was all we hoped for! We were a large family and each of us felt we had plenty of space.
Susannah was a joy to work with and made us feel like family! My brother is staying here next year since we loved it so much. We will for sure return even though it is so far from the United States. The town is perfect and our older kids loved the local bar scene. It helped that the six per tournament was going on so very fun to experience with locals and other people on holiday! The home is beautiful and full of comfy furniture. Bathrooms very modern and kitchen was nice a big. Local restaurant were great as well! We can’t wait to return.
Susannah thank you for sharing this amazing home with us!!
Dear Deborah. You and your family were a joy to have and I am so pleased you loved the house so much. It really is a very special place to bring families together and its location is great for young and old ! Come back and visit again soon. Susannah
We stayed at this beautiful villa in June. The accomodation is large and very well equipped. Plenty of hot water for showers and baths. The bed linen was lovely and beds very comfy. The three main bedrooms are good. If you like your room dark you need to take black out blinds as the curtains in some of the bedrooms are inadequate. The beach is beautiful and plenty of water sports avaliable. We barbecued most nights but ate out several evenings. I would recommend A ConchE, The Fort, and for home cooking at a reasonable price Chaplins. The ice cream factory (shop) is a must. For a family holiday or a large group of friends you will not get a better location. The villa is not ultra modern but has a lovely holiday feel and you can relax within the villa. The gardens are truly beautiful and so lovely to sit in the evening looking at the stars. Susannah was brilliant with the pre holiday organisation. Everything went smoothly. We had two children who needed cots and high chairs. A little dissapointed we had to pay extra for the extra cot and high chair as it is marketed as a family villa. Previous villas we have stayed in have had all cots and high chairs provided. Susannah organised the extra ones and they were clean and of an excellent standard. We used Faro Airport Transfers and they were excellent and I would highly recommend them. We will return and that surely is the best recommendation you can get.
Dear Robert. Thank you very much for your excellent review of Casa do Mar I'm really pleased that you found all my help "brilliant", its great to hear. We really look forward to welcoming you all back again soon.
Simply the best location in Luz
We spent a wonderful week in Casa do Mar in April. We are frequent visitors to the area for the last 10 years and have stayed in many rentals and this is the best location yet. There is no other villa with it's own beach access, with a view of the town to the right and Luz rock to the left, with only the sea in between it was simply breathtaking.
The house is massive. The pictures don't convey the sheer scale of the property, the gardens, beautifully manicured and extensive give plenty of spots to relax, sit and take in the view. We had a couple of rainy days and it was a pleasure sitting in the comfortable living room, reading a book looking out to sea or watching the large smart tv.
The villa location is excellent, we had a car but hardly used it, everything is in walking distance and it is very quiet despite being close to town. We hope to return here very soon.
Thank you so much for your lovely review. Casa do Mar is wonderfully located and we like to think unsurpassed too. I am really glad you were able to so enjoy this and the house too even when the sun wasn't shining. Its a real plus also that you don't have to have a car when staying with us with everything accessible on foot - great for young and old alike !.Thank you again and we look forward to having you back for a return visit in the not too distant future. Kindest regards, Susannah.
Special interest holidays:
Luz is renowned for its safe sandy beach which forms the central attraction for many holidaymakers. There are water sports centres where wind surfers and sail boats can be hired. Tuition in water ski and diving are available from the beach. You can also go on numerous inflatable boat rides and hire peddaloes. Beside the cliff known as the Rocha Negra an underwater reef produces a surf break which is well rated by local surfers when there is a decent wave and sea conditions just right although for more reliable surf you should head to the west coast which is only 25-30 minutes drive away. There are also numerous surf camps and triathlon companies who operate in the Algarve due to its great climate, safe cycling roads and easy access. The sea is mostly flat though in Luz so ideal for families with children.
Casa do Mar enjoys direct access to the beach with no road or path to cross. This is almost unique for property in the Algarve. There are generally buckets and spades to spare at the house, and some inflatable pool toys, but these are subject to use by all visitors and cannot be guaranteed to be there. The small shops along the front promenade and elsewhere, have a wide variety of beach "toys" for sale. The east end of the beach has rocky outcrops; at low tide children love to search the pools.
The easiest way to travel to Praia da Luz is to fly to Faro airport which is 89km from the house (approximately 1 and a half hours drive). Road access is easy from the airport with a major toll road linking to minor roads straight to Praia da Luz.
Other visitors from further afield have flown to Lisbon, which is also readily accessible by car (using another toll motorway) in approximately 3-4 hours depending on traffic.
Luz is on the doorstep. It is 3 minutes level walk along the beach, or quiet beach road, to the centre of Luz with all its restaurants, bars & supermarkets. Much of Luz centre is pedestrianised. There is a little known Roman site on the beach front with access along the promenade. Lagos is a historic town, with a museum, art galleries, many many shops and restaurants, about 6km. 4+ large supermarkets there including Pingo Doce, Intermarche, Lidl & Aldi. The old town is fascinating to walk through and has numerous lovely squares to stop for coffee and some people watching. There are also numerous excellent restaurants and a lovely marina and long sandy beach.
There are so many restaurants it is no longer possible to list them, but you can walk to (and from) a great many. The centre of Luz is a 3 minute stroll along the beach. Coffee, breakfast, lunch, supper are all available along the pedestrianized seafront if you wish. Larger and smaller supermarkets are accessible and some deliver. 4 Large supermarkets, plus a Lidl and Aldi, are in Lagos.
A bank is in the village at the church square. Hairdressers, clothes shops, chemists, doctors, are all in the "village" and the post office is on the "high street", all walkable. Any questions, please ask.
